“What’s life? A frenzied, blurry haze. What’s life? Not anything it seems. A shadow. Fiction filling reams. All we possess on earth means nil, For life’s a dream, think what you will, And even all our dreams are dreams.” ― Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Life Is a Dream

death and executors
suggesting you name a professional, like a lawyer, to be the executor of your estate. Particularly, if it involves multiple assets and accounts. These days it’s a complex and highly detailed function that can easily confuse a grieving family member. Sure, it costs. So do mistakes made by a family member in the depth of grief and beyond their legal depth in trying to mange your estate.

trouble
The biggest problem with being a quiet person, is that it gives those who don’t know me a wide open sky into which to fly their suppositions about me. Most of which are fantastical fabrications that have nothing to do with who I am.

one of us
Things that mom and I enjoyed doing together, will now be enjoyed by only one of us. However, those things are easier to do than watching her home slowly evaporate.

homage to the past
How much I felt 21 years ago when you asked to leave and I let you. Should I have fought for you? Uh, no. You were already committed elsewhere. Even though you cried on the phone, hoping I wouldn’t notice. And I didn’t. You asked me not to stop you and I didn’t. That’s how much I loved you.
today? Not so much.
For last year’s words belong to last year’s language And next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning. —T.S. Eliot

Parable of the Magnetic Clip
I have a magnetic clip attached to my outside door, so that building management can leave me messages. So far they haven’t used it at all. They continue to jam paper under the door or into the door frame.
Today I used the clip to hang up an envelope with a tip in it for the delivery person. I labeled the envelope to the person. They took the clip and the envelope, attached them both to my delivery, and then left it all at my door.
Do you ever get the feeling that maybe you’re missing messages from the universe?

One day, in the late 70′s, my father took me to see where he worked. There was a big poster of this guy hanging over his desk. I was stunned because I didn’t know my father was even aware of this guy. That day was, of course, long before we knew the whole story. I wondered why, of all the characters in Star Wars, my father would choose this guy.
At the time, he was busy leading a team that helped put together the Internet by writing specifications for and purchasing servers. Maybe he was using this guy for inspiration to make sure they were strong and secure. Or, maybe it was a pointer to hackers, who were basically a gleam in his eye.
Somehow it came up in conversation. I don’t remember exactly what he said—something about “unappreciated” or “misunderstood”, which shocked me.
Years later, I discovered my father to also be a guy in a metal suit with a lot of secrets. I guess that day was a message for me that I didn’t get.

the wind
and no one knows anything. not the buddha. not the god. not the birds or those dead and waiting and watching. no one knows. only the wind knows and it doesn’t talk.
