How to Become a Responsible Media User
An individual’s personal accounts on social media are…personal. The accounts are for you to maybe expressing your opinions, engage with brands (including celebrities, TV shows, etc etc - you get my point!) that you like, speak up on what’s on your mind, talk to friends or peers or celebrities i.e. other users on these social media platforms. But there are a few absolute Don’ts when it comes to social media according to me -
-spreading hate - you see a lot of users now spewing racial discrimination comments, terrorism related comments, religion hating, etc; let’s not do that!
-porn or sexually explicit “stuff” - what social media users don’t understand is that most social media platforms are public in nature unless you have changed the privacy settings. So if you comment or like “stuff” that are NSFW, remember how I told its public? Yeap, that act of yours is going to come back and bite you, hard. I have this follower on my Twitter network who did this extremely regularly who is now the laughing stock of a lot of people and is also blocked by most people. You wouldn’t want too be in “his/her” shoes.
Other than the above, there are a few things that you should remember to not do on social media that will make you a responsible user - they are less significant than the ones above. But the underlying principle is this - let’s say you posted something today on one of your social media accounts; think well and hard - would you want that post to represent you as a person 2 years from now or 5 years from now - to a future employer, to your future spouse, kids? We have all gone back on our Facebook Memories and asked, “Did I write that? Ohmygawwd, what was I thinking?” Never let your social media behavior come to that.
