Quote
“Hal would never come”. “Then leave him”. I think that just about sums it up, really: it’s the crux of what we imagined Alice and FP’s history was all about. The push and pull between being a Southsider or joining middle class society, of being with FP or with Hal. Of giving in to the obvious chemistry and feelings with FP or doing what’s best for her future (with possible child? Or perhaps Baby Chic was the last straw in driving her away). Either way, the way FP says “then leave him” with such little restraint and thinly-veiled desperation…I think that says it all. And the way that he quickly rectified it “…At home” shows his worst fear would be rejection if he let his guard down. He still loves her yet he knows he gets her and she knows it, too. My theory is that Alice and FP had the greatest love story that ever was and Hal and his lifestyle got in the way.
