FASHION FILM
For my final film I followed my original idea of having a flickered/ dream like effect between day time fashion shots and rave shots. The film came out just the way I wanted it to.
All the fashion shots are filmed in a way that is raw and not too polished. I did this because I didn’t want the shots of raves to not blend with the fashion shots. There is a nice unity between the two different kind of shots and they flow nicely together. The entire ethos of my zine is for youthful and problematic and edgy, and to have clean and contemporary shots would have gone against the style completely.
As my entire zine is about underground music, it was important that my film and the soundtrack had a relationship. Each clip I have edited carefully and precisely so that it moves with the audio. By doing this you get a really intense effect where you are fully engaged with all elements of the film; sight and sound.
I decided to have my film a little shorter than 2minutes as the style that I had gone for wouldn’t have had the same effect if it was much longer. To have it this long and to have an abrupt ending makes it memorable as well as rewatchable - you want to watch it again and experience it all again.
Overall I am very pleased with my film and how it turned out. It doesn’t take itself too seriously but at the same time it shows fashion and underground music in an exciting way.

For my publication I did a lot of research with current publications such as Dazed and I-D as well as other publications at ‘Colours may vary’. From this research I decided I wanted my publication to be a magazine.
Writing and editorial work is my strong point so I wanted to embrace what I love doing as much as possible. I wanted each page to be different with a lot of experimentation with typeography, image design and layouts.
My publication includes 2 of my shoots with my models, pictures I have taken relating to my theme of underground music, as well as relevant quotes. As far as writing is concerned I wrote to main articles in the publication. One article is about ‘hype beast’ fashion which I had researched on blog and is related to underground music and fashion. The piece is short but informative, as well as witty, which suits the publication style and relates well to the target audience.
I have a great interest in politics so for my second article I wanted to write about the upcoming general election. I didn't want the piece to be out of place so I have related it to young people as well as references information and images of underground music artists and their take and opinions on politics.
On the contents page I included a small introduction to the publication which nicely summarises what VEXED is about, as well as what the audience is to expect in the publication.
At the end of the publication I added a page as a warning and safety issue to target audience readers. From my research there is a lot of stigma about underground raves especially and them being a hot bed for violence and drugs. Sometimes this can be the case so I felt it was important to not let the issue go unnoticed.
Overall I am very happy with my publication. Every page is something different and it makes you want to keep turning. If I were to make any changes I would probably make it really long and thick like publications such as Dazed, but my budget for printing wouldn’t allow this and there would be no reason for it to be 200 pages (I just like the feel of thick and collectable magazines).

INSTAGRAM PAGE
To promote and publicise my zine, I created an instagram page which includes film teasers and sneak peaks of the publication as well as relevant posts to my zine’s aesthetic.

EDITED PICTURES
I want the images within my zine to flow so I have edited them all the same. I have edited them in a way that makes them look like film camera and creates the kind of warm tone that is perfect for my aesthetic.

SHOOT 2
From my shoot with Lucy I wanted a completely different aesthetic to the one with Jacob. Lucy’s style is very different and definitely a more retro style.
I also took 35mm film photos of Lucy but on black and white film so I also took some digitally so that I had some colour and so that I knew I had at least some good shots if the film camera didn’t develop properly.
I really like how these pictures turned out and the lighting is perfect.

SHOOT 1
My shoot with Jacob went really well. The location I picked was perfect for my zine aesthetic and the sunny weather created really nice shadows. We had a large wardrobe to work with so I was able to get lots of shots the garments styled on Jacob. Overall I am pleased with the outcome and have got all the shots that I wanted.
For filming I also got some nice shots of Jacob and the clothes which will work well when I edit them with the rest of my footage.

To inspire the styling and direction for the fashion clips of my film I looked online at street style/ hype beast fashion cookbooks. Lookbooks on youtube are videos which display a series of garments, normally to music and are very similar to professional fashion films. Lookbooks display clothing in a similar way to how I would like to showcase them in my film. There is emphasis on showing labels and consideration of location and model.
There was limited street style Lookbooks on youtube similar to the brands and style that I would like to portray, however they were still helpful and have inspired me.

MODEL PROFILE
The model I have chosen to feature in my film and publication is Jacob.
Jacob is a collector of “hype beast” clothing and also does Bassline DJ’ing under the name DJ Otis.
I have chosen Jacob because not only does he represent the Bassline music genre, but his clothes are also relevant to popular trends and brands within the underground scene.

MODEL PROFILE
One of the models I have chosen for my publication is Lucy. Lucy has an edgy and unique style which corresponds well with the aesthetic of my zine.
Lucy goes to raves and her boyfriend is a Drum and Bass DJ. Lucy’s style reflects that genre of underground music which is ideal as I was to include different styles in my publication.
I will shoot Lucy using Digital and Film cameras

INTERVIEW Q’S
For the publication to go with my film it’s going to be particularly people focused. I would like the content to have profiles of fashionable people/ underground music youths. Before I contact people to do shoots and editorial work I would like to have a plan so I can get as much from each meeting as possible.
Here are some outline questions I will ask:
Who are you?
Where are you from?
What do you do?
What music are you into?
What is the best event you've been to and why?
What is it about (underground music genre) that appeals to you?
There is a lot of stigma around underground music and the negative attention it gets from the media and the police, what is your opinion on this?
What do you wear day to day?
What are your favourite brands?
What is it about these brands that you like?

The track I would like to use for my fashion film is by Grime artist Novelist and is called ‘David Cameron Riddim’.
I picked this track as it is an underground Grime song which goes with my zine and film theme. The track is also not too intense and wouldn’t dominate the film or distract from the imagery.
The track is a ‘riddim’ which is a word that comes from dancehall culture, meaning the melody of a song. A riddim is without vocal or rapping or singing on top and is often shared and used by other artists.
I have messaged Novelist’s label (XL Recordings) at the time he released the track requesting a copyright licence. Its difficult to get in contact with underground artists and their labels as some artists don't have labels or in some cases the label isn’t huge and probably will only respond to promotions or events.
Being a riddim it might be the case that I don't need a copyright agreement to use it as the track is something to be generally shared and will always be recognised as Novelist’s song.

I would like to create an Instagram page for VEXED to promote the first issue as well as to document imagery and relevant information about underground music, fashion and the like.
Pages like Dazed publish posts about photographers as well as magazine content. I would like my page to look aesthetically relevant to the issue (35mm photography) as well as information and interview snippets about underground music and maybe even some satirical elements.
