Weekly Tasks
Throughout the weekly tasks we had explored many different ways to explore this brief for example in the first week we had to write about our heroes and this helped me realise who had impacted my life and the many other people in the world which also helped me realise what had gone on previously in the world that I didn’t know about.
The second week consisted of creating mood boards and developing ideas for the project. I had communicated with my group on what ideas we can all come up with and how we are able to help each other out. Also I had found the peer feedback can help me improve my work along the way. The moodboard task allowed us to realise that even the littlest research can have a big impact on our work.
The third week I was told to develop and design my final concept however I was finding it difficult to come up with ideas. Therefore I turned to my peers for advice. They told me to create something that is not seen all over town and therefore I had come up with the idea of merging text and image in one image and place it on ads around the city. I had also used my moodboards as inspiration for this idea.
The fourth week included making the piece and working on our final presentations. I had tried to develop my final concept and trying to document all my research and development.

Evaluation
My aim was to create 3 different characters and place them side by side to show the different human rights people are denied, however due to shortage of time I was only able to make one poster. Overall, I am happy with what I created as I was able to create a main image which depicts that equal pay is still a problem. Also, I had found that if I were to carry on with this project I would. Be able to create a series of work. For improvements I would change around my use of colours in order to create a more sophisticated poster and also attempt to place the image on other ads to create the advertising campaign. Also in the future I wish to carry out more research regarding the topic I am researching to help develop my ideation skills.

Final Idea
For my final idea I wanted to replicate and change Sean Williams work and change it through my own work. I was very interested in his technique of using words to create an image which is recognisable to the public. My initial idea included an image of a character and the characters hair/head will be full of words/comments regarding the matter of human rights and depicting what each of the characters would go through. These characters would be placed in a number of advertising campaigns such as billboards, bus stops and posters. Using Sean Williams technique, I am going to replace a certain imagery and place in text and use bright colours to make the overall image stand out. The colours I will be using will be similar throughout to show consistency. To make the text fit into a certain shape I am planning to warp, resize and align text appropriately so that it is readable and easy to understand.

Choosing a theme
For my project choosing an final theme was very difficult as I was interested in all the themes however I had found that politics is a huge topic which is trending globally therefore I could gain a bunch of research however I found that most people do not understand what is going on in the world therefore it would be difficult to protest against it. War and Diversity were also interesting topics however I was finding it difficult to come up with research and ideas that will support the topics. Therefore, I had decided to choose the theme of human rights as in my group we had found that this theme was a very important issue which is effecting a lot of people and there isn’t enough visual work which protests against this matter. As a group we had created a mind map on all the themes and came up with a bunch of ideas to support one another. We had also looked for online examples and shared our own opinions on each of the matters which helped us all relate to certain matters and come up with different starting points.

Contextual Studies: Cyberspace
Cyberspace definition:- A notional environment in which communication over computers networks occurs
Cyberculture definition: The social conditions brought about by the widespread use of computers networks for communication, entertainment, and business.
Cyborg definition: A fictional or hypothetical person whose physical abilities are extended beyond normal human limitations by mechanical elements built into the body
Virtual Reality - computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as helmet with screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors.
This lecture was interesting in its way of depicting different ways people approach and talk about technology. However I was not personally interested in the overall theme but I did learn new things.

Contextual Studies: Storytelling
Stories are found in all forms of communication for example media, painting etc.
Stories used to be told by word of mouth however a good memory is needed therefore you n eed to be a good listener and memory to be a good storyteller.
Storytelling affects the brain - smells, sounds, livens the imagination as an instant image is placed in a persons head
First storytellers were priests
How can you tell a story?
Colour - CMYK and RGB
Typography and text
Ilustrations- hand drawings to depict exactly what I want to show
Speech- narration of what is going on
Images
I found out what storytelling is and how it has been used through different subjects across visual communication. Therefore it is easier to relate to the subject regardless of their background.

Contextual Studies- Appropriation
This lecture made me understand the idea of appropriation and how it can be used in graphic design. I learnt that it can be used to influence an audience to purchase or change their opinion on a product.
Defintion : Taking something for own use usually without permission
Treachery of Images
Surreal - having qualities of surrealism, Bizarra/dreamlike, Not real but aspects could be more real then others
Automatism
Refers to making art without conscious thought, accessing material from the unconscious mind as part of the creative process.
Involuntary
Metamorphosis- Term used to indicate shape-shifting in art
Allows an artist to transform a shape representing one item into a similar shape representing something else. So, in turn allows one meaning to be hidden behind another.

Contextual Studies – Sound and Movement
There are 2 different types of sound Diegetic Sound (known as actual sound) and non-diegetic sound (known as commentary sound.
Diegetic sound source is visible on the screen or whose source implies to be present by the action of the film. Depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame it can be seen on or off screen.
Non-diegetic sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action, this is basically background noise that only the audience hears.
I found many different examples of sound and how it can be used as a main subject matter. Sound is a key feature in our work as it is used to create different moods and ultimately provide spectacle to a piece of work.

Contextual Studies – Language
Semiotics is the study of signs and their use or interpretation. Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) is widely regarded as “the father of semiotics” and also father of linguistics. Roland Barthes (1915-1980 French theorist and philosopher) was another person who found semiotics very useful in his analysis and various cultural materials.
According to de Saussure signs are made up of two things:
‘signifier’ - form, image or sound - what you see, state it.
‘signified’- concept or idea we think of when we encounter the signifier
However according to Barthes signs are either “denotated” or “connotated”
Denotation- direct meaning - it is what it is
Connotation - interpreted meaning - another layer (idea behind it)
Connotation and Denotation are mainly used in advertisements. Denoted signs are used in conjunction with connoted ones for example not selling a product (denotation) but selling an idea/ thought/belief etc. (connotation).
Charles Sanders Peirce had developed more complex semiotics system, centred around idea of interpretation. He pitched that there are three modes of signs:
Iconic – which resembles their meaning in some way, attempting to look like an intended concept
Indexical - Signs which indicate what they stand for by a link or a cause
Symbolic - Another meaning is conveyed by the sign and how symbols are culturally specific
Codes are a system of signals used to represent letters or number in transmitting messages. Code semiotics generates rules which in turn generates signs, thus leading to how people read the signs.
Semiotics in costume links back to culture and how it links to our interpretation of signs for example wedding dresses in different cultures are different in colour. Semiotics expands language to include object, gestures, activities, sounds, images and anything else that can be perceived by the senses.
Semiotics can have different interpretations and theories which is almost impossible to differentiate and see which meaning can be really defined as semiotics however semiotics itself can be defined as allowing viewers to find the message without being so direct about it.
