october 31, 2013 // 2 sets - happy hallowinds
Join us this Thursday on HALLOWEEN NIGHT for "Happy Hallowinds"! (yes, we came up with that....) We are bringing you two sets of music:
First set, we bring you Leah Paul. Ms. Paul will be performing music off of her album "Bike Lane" on Skirl Records. Peter Margasak of eMusic says: All nine tunes here are fully composed, treated with translucent contrapuntal arrangements, a serene timbre, and a sweet articulation of their pretty and elegant melodies. In fact, while operating like a sophisticated chamber ensemble, the quartet reveals a wonderfully fluid, graceful pop sensibility. There’s nothing cheap or shallow about the music, but the themes lodge in the memory like radio hits.

Set two is clarinetist, Andrew Leonard, debuting at elastic hour this week with his woodwind quintet. Clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon and horn all combine and create sonorities possible only in the realm of the sublime. Join us for an evening of original compositions by Mr. Leonard.

Hosted by Nick Mancini himself, the concert series, elastic hour, has been touted as one of LA’s most diverse and prestigious live music series. This 5th season will last for 10 weeks, September 5th to November 7th.

october 24, 2013 // 2 sets - emily zuzik & arf
For the first set, we bring you Emily Zuzik. Emily writes and sings Americana-tinged songs about love, loss and redemption (yes, and sometimes revenge). Her live shows are not always so "by the book" though, ranging from swaggering rock 'n roll to intimate songstress. Sometimes all in one set, but guaranteed to entertain.

Second set, we bring you, Arf. Arf started in 2013 as a live a cappella re-imagining of Genevieve Artadi's solo music, and in only a few months has evolved into a brand new beast with six heads to think up songs and arrangements, and fourteen limbs playing synths and drums. The Arf Beast is Kathy Hoye, Sean Fitzpatrick, Andrea Calderwood, Genevieve Artadi, Alexandra Domingo, and Jessica Freedman.

Hosted by Nick Mancini himself, the concert series, elastic hour, has been touted as one of LA’s most diverse and prestigious live music series. This 5th season will last for 10 weeks, September 5th to November 7th.

october 3, 2013 // jonathan rowden + friends
"We realized that the majority of what we talk about as a band can be summed up in two words: honesty and trust. We aim to create music that simply 'is' -- melodies that live up to their intended nature, improvisations that freely inhabit the world of each song, and communication that is vulnerable and teaches us to rely upon one another. Stylistically the music is a summation of all the sounds and experiences we've had in many genres including classical, jazz, rock, electronic, and world music. We hope to inspire something positive and good in each other at the least, and at the most, in the listener."

This genre-bending electric quintet brings together some of the Los Angeles jazz scene's most distinctive young virtuosos to play the original music of composer/trumpeter Daniel Rosenboom. Drawing from such influences as Frank Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Miles Davis the music is fast and fleet, sleek and seductive, a little bit twisted and down-right rocking!

september 19, 2013 // sangster & polybuzz + nick mancini quartet
Polybuzz (Grethel Bonilla) is a Los Angeles native guitarist and songwriter. Being mostly self taught gives her an edge of raw refinement; a guiding light for unpredictable but catchy song progressions of peppy rhythms and deep vulnerable textures.
Sangster (Afton Hefley) recalls her earliest memories of music making - singing in her church choir and tender, young piano lessons. Her songs are a rich mixture of folk and organic textures with classical and jazz sensibilities in a classic pop song form; warm and inviting, straightforward and authentic.

Nick Mancini (vibraphonist and series curator) brings in three heavy hitters to form a quartet specifically for this episode of elastic hour. He's joined by percussionist Pete Korpella, bassist Eric Sittner and drummer Abe Lagrimas Jr. and has lined up a special evening of originals and covers ranging from lush and ambient to straight ahead and groovy with a generous dose of heart wrenching ballads.

Hosted by Nick Mancini himself, the concert series, elastic hour, has been touted as one of LA’s most diverse and prestigious live music series. This 5th season will last for 10 weeks, September 5th to November 7th.

sept 5, 2013 // diana kazakova & nick mancini group

Kicking off the 5th season of elastic hour at Curve Line Space will be NYC singer, Diana Kazakova, accompanied by virtuoso guitarist, John Storie.
Kazakova's singing has been described as "hauntingly beautiful and affecting" ... As a song stylist, she will be focussing on interpretations of both familiar and obscure selections as well as her own material. Smoky and folky with a sip of jazz. She will also be joined by David Zurak who will be doing physical theatre improv. Guest backing vocalist will be Afton Hefley of Sangster.
Nick Mancini Group will perform for the second set of the evening. A quintet consisting of Rufus Philpot on bass, John Storie on guitar, Vardan Ovsepian on keys, Nick on vibes, and drums TBD. This group will also accompany Kazakova on a few tunes in the first set.
