it feels really disingenuous, the way ofmd uses ‘therapy speak’ and how “talk it through” becomes a motif, only for a lot of the more important moments of communication to be skipped over in season two. stede never explains why he left, the crew forgiving ed and his probation ending happens offscreen too… it makes moments like “poison into positivity” and their finale kiss and retirement feel really superficial and cheap and fake. you’re still waiting on the catharsis and the proper conclusion of certain narratives, you’re still waiting on the vulnerability and communication that kickstarted the relationship in the first place in season one. but it never comes, and instead we get these plot beats that should come FROM communication, without the communication.

i was on tik tok the other day and someone was doing a video about tips to get eggs off broody hens and i was extremely surprised by how many people in the comments thought if you let the hens sit on the eggs they’d hatch, and also, just like… the fundamental misunderstanding of the concept of a broody chook. no guys the eggs just rot. you gotta get them or it’s a waste.

it’s not like i’m going around saying nobody’s allowed to like ed or write fic of ed or anything, you guys probably know i like ed and write fic of him and stuff.

believe me, i’m very aware ed’s a fictional character. when i’m talking about ed’s accountability i’m mainly talking about canonical writing flaws that set up a very significant tone of seriousness and deep intensity with ed’s actions and then drop that tone and imply offscreen healing and forgiveness in a way that doesn’t match with the tonal setup of the themes that were introduced at all. and how that feels like it takes away from ed as a character and the story as a whole and is detrimental to the intended-as-happy ending and incongruous with izzy’s death.

it’s not about condemning the fictional character necessarily, as all of these characters are flawed and complex, it’s fully about distress at the writing flaws that do these characters injustice.

i think there kinda IS a major problem with ofmd not knowing what genre it is, and that problem is basically that the type of romance and drama it is and the themes in those contexts it brings up call for character development but the type of comedy it is relies on character flaws…

you’ve made these characters that are heartfelt and that the audience connects to and then you’re treating them like they’re just characters to laugh at, and you end up with this situation where these characters have communication and emotional regulation problems and a lot of personal issues to boot, and you’ve put a lot of emphasis on, assigned a lot of weight and intensity to the repercussions of those issues…

and then after that, after having set that tone that sets certain expectations, you proceed to treat those characters in the context of a comedy, in a way that befits a genre where the repercussions of the character flaws aren’t taken seriously.

you’ve shown us how deeply serious the repercussions of the character flaws can be, stede’s ed’s and izzy’s alike, and then you’ve randomly abandoned that tone to proceed to treat those problems as if they don’t need to be resolved, or even in some instances as if they have been resolved without showing a bit of it onscreen.

which is so disappointing in a show where there was focus on communication and resolving conflict, and those things were important… the conclusion of those narratives you began has been lain aside for much more superficial things.
