Hi! So I recently discovered removing the word 'that' from 90% of my writing actually made it more fluid and hardly impacted the readability. Tiny achievement but very proud of myself as a novice writer ^.^ I was wondering if (other than the up/down one) there were any other tiny tricks for removing superfluous words? Thanks!
Great question! Honestly, there are hundreds, but here are a few to get you started.
Words You Can (Usually) Safely Cut from Your Writing
That
Then
Start
Begin
Suddenly
Down
Up
Kind of
Really
Just
Basically
In general, look out for adverbs (actually, really), “hedging” words (kind of, sometimes), and ambiguous words (nothing, everything, someone). Some can be cut; others will need to be revised or swapped out. “That” is a classic offender. “Then” can usually be changed to “and.” It’s only necessary to qualify that an action was “started” if the action gets interrupted, otherwise it can be cut. (”She started to cry” becomes “She cried”).
I have a detailed, exhaustive list of words like this (with explanations!) in my book The Complete Guide to Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, which will be done soon :)
Nice to hear from you & hope this helps!

"One of the most prevalent obstacles in our ability to heal and self-actualise is when our productivity is tied to our worthiness."
I think the studyblr community especially needs to hear this. You don't have to be productive all the time, you need rest. Recovering from internalised capitalism means unpicking all the messages from family, friends, school and workplace that have reinforced the idea that you are a commodity, and that your worth is based on what you do. Your worth is inherent.

If a lot of people do this, it’s possible that there’ll be less fear and more people speaking up. This may seem pointless to some and “a trend” but it’s still a form of protesting. So yes, I support this.
Remember the black fist icon for BLM where people changed their DP into it? It was really an effective protest to express dissent.
What if we unite as well and change our DPs in all social media platforms using a uniform icon/logo for JunkTerrorLawNOW, where people around the globe can join the online protest? We are desperate for international intervention.
I'm picturing out a minimalist mouth icon painted with the Philippine flag on the lips, with written "Junk Terror Law Now".
I'm calling out graphic artists who can help. To the others, your inputs will be helpful as well if you want to brainstorm further. Please signal boost!
I know there's a high probability that this might flop, but I need to take a chance on this. I feel helpless. We need to do something. We need to do more.

Now that the Terror Bill has been signed into law and will take effect in 15 days, a little reminder for my PH mutuals:
Set your social media to private
Do a clean up of your public posts
Block everyone of your friends who have voiced pro-government sentiments. You don’t know who will sell you out.
Do a check of your facebook groups. If you’re part of anti-admin groups, make sure it’s legit and not a fake group used to redtag.
Increase your email security
Stop signing petitions vs terror bill on change.org as this is what they’re using to redtag (remember the influx of fake accounts? Yeah)
Instead, send emails to your representatives using a vpn
Have your lawyer’s number on standby
Be aware of your rights (i will post a refresher here later on)
Look out for your friends and family

What happened in the Philippines today?
Number of COVID-19 cases breached the 40,000-mark
President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Anti-Terror Bill into law
Yes, the Anti-Terror Bill has been approved amid a health crisis.
However, the fight is not over
Join the email protest. Continue expressing dissent. Yes, it’s terrifying to do so right now but it is not the time to give up. Don’t stop fighting because we are fighting for our rights.
So please, Filipino or not, help with the email protest. Below is a link for emailing the Department of Justice. Demand that they review the bill and pass Implementing Rules and Regulations that protect our rights. Look at my previous posts if you want more information + look at the #junkterrorbill tag.
The fight is not over.

Please help the Philippines. This is for everyone seeing this right now, especially to non-Filipinos.
There is a bill called “The Anti-Terrorism Bill” which gives law enforcement agents and military personnel to be able to arrest anyone suspicious without any warrant. This bill can be abused and used to target anyone who is giving criticism about the government, the military, the police, etc.
Imagine getting arrested for posting a meme. That’s a possibility if this bill gets approved by the president. The thing is, the president just made the bill urgent. He wants this bill to be made into a law. Doing so will silence the Filipinos.
So please please help us. Especially those out of the country since there’s no chance that you will be arrested.
I will post some pictures for more information including how to help us.

Hey, if you’re not black and can’t get out and protest but want to know how you can help black people, consider donating to the Black Covid Relief Fund which goes directly to black people who’ve been affected by this pandemic. Black People are being disproportionately affected by this virus and anything you can give helps.

Supporting black lives matter (or not) is not a question of politics or political beliefs. It is a question of valuing human lives. If you choose not to stand with black people, your statement is that their life’s don’t matter or matter less than yours. It should absolutely never be considered a political stance to say people should not be murdered.
