Wood Engraving Wednesday

Here are a few delightful wood engravings from a recent gift showing the various processes that go into binding a book. This little pamphlet is entitled A Short History of Bookbinding and a Glossary of Styles and Terms Used in Binding … .printed in London at the Chiswick Press for the bookbinder Joseph William Zaehnsdorf in 1895.These images were probably printed from metal plates that were made from the original wood engravings. The engravings are not attributed, as was the case for most commercial engravings.

"Hay un fusilado que vive"

Esta frase es el origen de Operación Masacre, el libro con el que Rodolfo Walsh rompió el silencio sobre uno de los crímenes más oscuros de la Argentina de los años 50. Después del golpe militar (del 16 de septiembre de 1955) conocido como la "Revolución Libertadora", que derrocó a Perón, el nuevo gobierno impuso una fuerte represión contra el peronismo llevando incluso a un intento de "desperonizar" el país y borrar cualquier recuerdo sobre Perón y Evita. En este clima, un grupo de militares y civiles peronistas, liderados por el General Juan José Valle, intentó llevar a cabo un levantamiento armado para restituir el orden constitucional. Durante la noche del 9 de junio de 1956 algunos civiles fueron detenidos sin juicio por fuerzas de seguridad, acusados de participar en la conspiración y trasladados a un descampado en la localidad de José León Suárez, en la provincia de Buenos Aires, donde fueron fusilados extrajudicialmente. Sin embargo, varios (siete de doce personas en total) lograron sobrevivir a pesar de las heridas y contaron lo sucedido. Con sus testimonios, Walsh reconstruyó los hechos y expuso el aparato represivo de un Estado que había prometido restaurar la legalidad. Los fusilamientos de José León Suárez se convirtieron así en símbolo de la impunidad, pero también en punto de partida para una memoria que no se dejó callar y un nuevo tipo de organización que nació de la sangre de los caídos, para vengarlos y honrarlos a través de la resistencia.

The Eve Gene

Black women are the blueprint. Science proves that the Mitochondrial Eve, the mother of all humans, was an African woman. While all humans carry traces of her DNA, African women have more direct and diverse mtDNA lineages than non-Africans because their ancestors experienced fewer mutations over time. Black women, particularly those from Africa, have thee most unaltered genetic connection to her due to their deep-rooted genetic diversity.

When my cousin was in the NICU, the doctor and an older white nurse told my cousin that Black children born as preemies are always healthier and get out the hospital at a documented faster rate than other babies, and that Black girls graduate the NICU the fastest and the healthies over the Black male babies. It’s LITERALLY in us, and the healthcare industry knows it and has seen and documented the awe of our genes.

When they say "she get it from her Mama", believe that!

God truly does give his toughest battles to his toughest people, bc had we been any other group of people, we would've been extinct.
