How Harry Potter fan fiction destroyed my (non-existing) love life

We all know what reading is, right? This process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from them. And we all read at least some Books, even when it was only for school. But sometimes, mostly in terms of fantasy books, we manly enjoy the world the main character lives in, rather than the actual story the book is about. That also includes films and everything. So, kind of every fandom has something bothering about it. The solution for that is called fan fiction. Sounds silly at first but let me tell you how harry potter fan fiction ruined my (non-existing) love life.

At first, fan fiction was the freedom to step away from canon, the official material in a fictional universe, and use the basis of the imaginary world to create alternative storylines and plots. Since the writers of fan fiction are using copyrighted material, no one is allowed to sell them like “real book” do. So, they are found on a variety of Websites. The most famous are Wattpad and Ao3 (Archive of Our Own). This opens a lot of freedom to the content of the literary works. But this power got abused really quickly.

I began to read fan fiction when I was around 12. I’ve always been a huge Harry Potter fan, but like I said in the beginning, the story itself wasn’t that appealing for me. I was mostly in love with the wizarding world, J. K. Rowling created. In Harry Potter fan fiction, I was able to read more interesting stories that played in this amazing universe. The mix was perfect.

But as I grew older, I found out, that most of the readers and writers of this kind of stories used fan fiction for shipping. When there are characters, you would really like seeing together but in the canon version they don’t really interact much, there was probably another human thinking the same and uploading a story about this shipping somewhere. This is mostly the reason, why every kind of fandom has fan fiction about it. Doesn’t matter if it’s a book or a film character or any kind of celebrity, they are always going to be fans shipping people and in result of that writing fan fiction about this shipping. This also gives the opportunity for the LGBTQ+-Community to get represented more in certain fandoms. It spreads awareness. That’s great! But sometimes everyone is going a bit too far.

Now that we all know the basics of fan fiction, let’s get to the spicy stuff: The reason why I’m so lonely. Since fan fiction is commonly used for shipping, we all could guess what else is a part of these stories (not all of them obviously, but a certain amount of them, clearly the majority, are): sexual content. This certainly isn’t the only reason, why my life is that boring, but we all like to blame things on people or in this case on fan fiction. Plus, because of fictional characters my expectations in partners are so incredibly high, that I would probably never be able to date any guy, because he isn’t Draco Malfoy. This definitely affected my life in some way or another.

There isn’t any problem with that, and mostly it’s really entertaining reading those stories, but I thought it might interest you, what also includes reading fan fiction. Not that you now begin reading any story, and you stumble upon some “interesting” parts. Let’s put it this way.

On the whole, I really enjoy that someone once created this option and I really like the chance for LGBTQ+ members to be able to be represented more in any media. Every baby gay heart beats faster every time when there is just a little bit of gayness in anything. It’s an amazing feeling not to feel alone, but having people understanding you and welcoming you in this amazing community.

Cycling in my free time

So personally, like it to go out alone or with my father and ride with my bicycle. The things that I like about it are to feel free and to go anywhere I want. Sometimes I’ll do 45 up to 70 kilometers with the bike and on some days when I’m lazy and I just want to enjoy I only do 20 kilometers. The main reasons I started doing exercises with the bike was that I wanted to lose some weight and that I enjoy while doing it, and because I knew that it was good for my body and my mental health, I was even more happy to do it. To beauty of the sport is that you can enjoy it with other people so what I mean by that is that you can ride with a person on the same velocity and easily talk to him. Moreover, on your bike you can enjoy the view depending on the area you ride like for example my father and I like to ride in Wannsee Grunewald or Schlachtensee we like to leave the city and enjoy the nature. Also, dome great things we sometimes are that we go to a bier garten and drink a beer together, after a long bike trip it is sometimes nice to recompence our selves with a cold fresh beer. The other thing that I like about that sport is that I have to repair my bike on my own so when something breaks, I have to repair it my self and that helped me also a lot to understand how my bike is working and I am more likely to repair some damages on my own if it suddenly fails to work on the trip. So, I am being doing it for the past year now and I am happy to say that I will continue because I love it. On the last month it was colder because of the seasons but now it is slowly getting warmer and I am more excited than ever to restart the season. I hope that I maybe convinced you to go out and enjoy a tour with a bicycle.
