I picture it in my head as I do it.” Alice reached over to give her hand a reassuring squeeze. “I know you. That’s why I’m sure. So the traditional way isn’t working for you. That doesn’t mean you won’t figure it out. You’re better than you think.”

Elveria shrugged a bit, a slight frown on her lips. “Maybe, but I feel like by having it I’ve been unfairly handed a greater opportunity than my siblings got.” She admitted softly, putting on a sad smile. She listened to Alice’s advice, nodding a bit as she finished speaking. “Okay, I’ll give it a try.” She said, standing up and holding onto her wand firmly. She took a deep breath, closing her eyes to focus her mind. “Aguamenti.” She recited, opening her eyes slowly to see the admittedly small, but steady flow of water from her wand that lasted a few moments before dripping to a stop.

Elveria had had enough of studying and getting frustrated with herself and with her work for not being good enough. She decided to go for a walk, wanting to clear her mind and get into a better headspace. As she continued through the grounds, she saw the other girl approaching her, and smiled brightly at the familiar face. “Sophie!” She called out, waving at the younger girl. “How’ve you been? I feel like I haven’t seen you since school started.” She said with a small laugh.

“A filthy mudblood like you cannot afford accidents.” he spat at her, a wicked smile lighting his lips when she began to plead with him. “Especially not with me. Did you forget the last time you pissed me off, Elkins? Do you need a reminder of that?�� 

Elveria shook her head quickly, “Eli, please.” She begged, glancing around to see if anyone nearby heard what was happening and was willing to help her but no one seemed to pay them any attention. “You know I can’t defend myself, Eli, please don’t do this.” She pleaded. It was common knowledge for anyone that shared classes with Elveria and paid attention to what happened that she had great difficulty properly producing and keeping spells.

You’re not going to live like a muggle because you aren’t one.” Alice didn’t struggle quite like Elveria, but she did struggle. She had to work hard to maintain her grades and stay on track in most subjects. Not everyone was naturally gifted, picking things up right away. It didn’t mean they should give up on magic. Alice couldn’t imagine her life without magic. “You’re going to get it.”

“I was raised as one, why not keep that up?” She asked, partly teasing as she sat down next to the girl with a sigh. “How do you get your spells to last? Cause I just can’t get them to last long enough to do what they’re supposed to.” She said with a slight pout. “How are you so sure? It’s been seven years and I haven’t gotten it yet.” She said with a small laugh at her own expense.

Elveria sighed, twirling her wand between her fingers and putting it down on the table in front of them, “I’ll never get it.” She said with a sigh, collapsing into the nearest chair. “Let’s face it, Alice, I’m never going to be good at magic. It’s just a fact.” She said defeatedly. Elveria had never been talented at casting spells, in fact, she only did well enough to pass, and not even pass with more than a “barely” in front of it. “I’m passing, I’ll graduate, and then I can just do things the muggle way like my parents and siblings do, I’ll be fine.” She said with a small shrug. Elveria had more ambition than her body knew what to do with, but she could never stay focused long enough to keep her spells working.

“It really isn’t that bad!” Phora said, trying to convince not only Elveira, but herself too. But it didn’t work, and she just burst out laughing. “Kidding, it’s disgusting. And it makes you all dizzy.” She said, still pushing a cup in direction of the other.

“You’re really making me glad I agreed.” She said sarcastically, smiling a bit at the girl. She took the cup, raising it towards the girl, “Cheers.” She said before downing the contents of the cup as quickly as possible. She coughed a bit, the taste making her gag, but got it all down none the less. “Wow, you weren’t kidding about that.”

Elveria had been hit harder by the shot she took with Phora than she expected, so she’d been stumbling around since it kicked in, and had had a coouple cups of the punch since then as well. When she stumbled backwards and knocked into the blonde, consequently spilling her drink, she’d simply giggled out an apology until he pointed his wand at her, which quickly sobered her up. “Eli...” She pleaded, feeling her heart begin to race. “It was an accident, I’m sorry...”

Eli glared at the girl who had just spilled her drink onto the front of his shirt. “Are you fucking kidding me, Elkins.” he snarled as he took his wand out, merely to clean his clothes but he pointed it at her anyway. “Give me one reason why I should hex you and send you off to the hospital wing this instant.”

Elveria sighed, still reluctant to drink. She wasn’t the type to drink, but since the girl was so adamant about it and it was her last Halloween at Hogwarts, she figured what the hell. “Fine, fine. You’ve convinced me.” She said with a slight smile. 

“Just one shot is all I’m asking!” Phora said as she grabbed someone’s arm. She was usually like that, but she had been dared to take shots with everyone, and it didn’t take long until the alcohol got to her system.

“Ooh nice. Got a prince charming lined up as well?” She mused, running a hand through her hair. “Wonder Woman. I loved the TV show.”

Elveria shook her head, “No, not yet.” She said with a small shrug. Elveria had never had a boyfriend before, so not having one yet didn’t bother her. “That’s really cool, I saw the comic books my brothers had but we don’t have a TV.” She said with a small shrug.

“I’m going as Snow White.” Elveria said with a grin. She’d been looking up to the Disney princesses since she was a child so she loved getting to dress as them. “What about you?”

“Are you sure? It’s bothersome, though I’m sure it would have been a lot worse had it not bounced off the wall prior to hitting me,” she commented. “I don’t have any potions, do you think Madame Pomfrey will ask a lot of questions?”

“Why don’t I go with you? If she asks we can say it was some kids prank gone wrong, and I’ll vouch for it.” She offered with a slight smile. She didn’t like seeing other students in pain, it was the natural reaction for her to want to help.
