Is this about this ai debate that is clogging my dash since days now?

I can absolutely understand the point that a lot of ai has ethical problems, but I cannot understand the "actors did not give consent" part- where exactly is the difference between an ai gif of two characters kissing and a PS edit of the same two characters kissing?

I've seen my fair share of seriously fucked up NSFW fanart in the most different of mediums (fanfic, Photoshop, video manips) and no one had a problem with that, it is only now that a computer is doing the rendering, that it escalates. It baffles me.

I have even seen a creator say "if you want to see your ship kissing learn Photoshop like on the old days" - how is that more consentual? Because a human did the brain work behind the edit? Hardly in my opinion. I get thst it feels more weird because it is a video but with todays technology, even without ai such an edit is possible.

We can all come together and talk about the actual problems of ai that many of us, artists or not, are afraid of, but if we start using consent as an argument, we need to apply this moral to *ANY* media we consume here on tumblr.

Being an artist myself I have made a lot of fanart over the years, and in a lot of my artworks, the characters in the painting can be very much identified not only as the characters of a show, but also as the people portraying them. I try to be mindful with my art and not create anything that I personally would feel uncomfortable with seeing made about myself- especially if it goes online.

Yeah, I would probably feel weird about a kissing gif made about me, but no less weird if it was a kissing PS edit or fanart (maybe actually even more so in the latter options because a human sat down for literal HOURS to make this - what?).

But honestly, I think actors get to see a lot wilder shit than that - and that wild shit is for some reason not what we talk about- what anyone has ever talked about on here, it is those random ai gif ls that seem to really rub people the wrong way, eventhough it was clearly not made in a way to be upsetting on purpose or downright NSFW.

As long as I see that amount of massively saucy fanfic recommendations, I am really struggling to see how one thing is about consent and the other is not. (No hate on saucy ffs if this is your thing! All the love to my followers who love themselves some spice- I'm just trying to spark some thought here).

This controversy over ownership is getting me pissed. Every gif, every picture we use is already stolen, property of Amazon. Characters property of Tolkien stolen every time we write fic. Actors faces 'desecrated' every time we make art. EVERY TIME. So we're ALL guilty. I don't see why people need to point fingers when we all take part EQUALLY in this 'sacrilege'. Mea culpa. I take part and I won't pretend that some usage is more acceptable than others.

People shouldn't be claiming they 'own' gifs and sign them. You don't own shit. Amazon does. They own every frame of 'your' gif. But then again I'm guilty of using faces and characters and I tend to sign those creations so I'm not going to shovel shit on someone else for how they use the material that doesn't belong to them. Is similar behaviour from everyone else too much to ask?

It's kinda interesting, I actually interpreted that elrond had the smallest hands because on my own hand, as someone who has been fencing and sword fighting for over 15 years now, my index finger is the one I use when a ring is TOO BIG for me. Bonus that he uses his right hand, which for right handed people often is the hand with the chonkier fingers.

People have been asking for elves who aren’t just perfect ethereal Mary Sues for ages and the minute they get Galadriel making bad choices because of her PTSD and Gil Galad being kind of bitchy because he’s got objectively one of the worst jobs in Middle Earth (which he inherited as a teenager and has a nearly 100% fatality rate), folks are upset they aren’t likable enough?? If y’all saw what the elves got up to in the First Age you’d hurl.
