Catherine let out a small laugh, and Jackson felt reborn. Her laughter was one of the most beautiful sounds his ears could perceive; it filtered down to his rotten heart, slipping through the cracks without him being able to prevent it, scaring away for moments so many misfortunes, sadnesses and desolation.

Summary: Standish has resigned and is trying to have a life away from Slough House, without the team, without him. This story begins at the end of book/season 3 ("Real Tigers") and takes events from "Spook Street" (book 4).

Shirley spends the afternoon at the Standish house. Catherine learns a few things about the girl's life; there's much she doesn't know.

"Why didn't they just communicate?? They're so stupid!" Have you considered that communicating with someone you love and value and don't want to hurt is scary and that vulnerability takes practice and that perfect characters with perfect words make the most boring stories of all

Obsessed with Catherine Standish doing things that the other Slow Horses would never imagine she would do - but Jackson Lamb knows her better than that. Pulling a gun on the Dogs to get them out of being taken into the Park? Lamb knows she can do that, that’s why he plants it in her bag. Tracking down the baddies’ van by phoning the rental company and getting the registration number after pretending to have an accident with one of their vehicles? This surprises the Slow Horses - but it wouldn’t surprise Lamb. Her telling Lamb that she didn’t ask River where he was going and he didn’t tell her. “That doesn’t mean you don’t know” is Lamb’s response, and she cracks and tells him she went through River’s pockets while he was in the toilet. This isn’t really something the Slow Horses - or even the audience - would think her capable of doing. But Jackson Lamb knows Catherine Standish will go through someone’s pockets to get to the bottom of something. He knows she’s clever and will go about getting information in ways that the others probably wouldn’t that gets her results. He knows her better than anyone, he knows what she can do and he loves respects her for it - not that he’d ever tell her.

Catherine asked Jackson to apologize for their fight at the gas station. He doesn't want to do it.

“Goodbye, Jackson,” her words had not yet reached his ears as she had already gotten out of the car. Her goodbye sounded too final, even more so than her resignation at the gas station. It was a statement, do something or you'll never see me again. 

And he thought of the last months without her, he thought of the agony, he thought of the loneliness, the sadness and the melancholy. Her mere presence changed his entire life, even quiet, even silent, having her there made his miserable life a little less miserable, and the only thing he needed to avoid that, was to ask her forgiveness.
