Aspiring writer and costume designer. I'm into a lot of fandoms at the moment. Nostalgic Gravity Falls Fan and I've probably had too much Harry Potter for this lifetime. As a proper nerd I love books, comic-books, graphic novels, mythology, videogames (expecially old ones) and old Hollywood movies.

An Analysis of “Love's Messenger” (1885) by Marie Spartali Stillman

This painting first caught my eye because Stillman’s style reminded me of fellow Pre-Raphaelite painter, and one of my favorite artists, Evelyn De Morgan. The subject matter is very much in line with the themes of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, evoking the romantic atmosphere of the Middle Ages or the Renaissance.
At first glance, there are three key elements that immediately draw the viewer’s attention: the dove, the letter, and the girl.
Let’s begin with the dove. It is perched delicately on her thumb, while her open palm holds a few grains of corn, with more scattered on the windowsill. It's likely meant to feed the bird before its departure. Doves and pigeons have been used for centuries to carry messages, and here, the dove acts as the titular messenger of love.
Tied to the bird’s leg is a red thread, which connects to the love letter the girl clutches to the left side of her chest, the side the heart is located. This thread may symbolically reference the Thread of Life and the myth of the Three Fates.
In Greek mythology, Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos are the three goddesses who determine the course of human lives: birth, destiny, and death. Clotho specifically spins the thread of life, weaving each person’s destiny.
But let's turn our attention to another detail of the painting, specifically towards what the bird’s gaze is landing on.
In the lower left-hand corner of the painting, we see an embroidered image of Cupid, which we can assume the girl had been working on. Cupid, or Eros as he is known in Greek mythology, is the god of love, desire, and affection. Above the embroidery, pink, green, and red colored threads are visible. The same red thread she used for Cupid now binds the message to the dove’s leg.
This depiction of Cupid is unusual as he is shown wearing a blindfold. The inclusion of a white dove and the red rose pinned to the girl's dress are also interesting. One a symbol of innocence and purity, the other reinforcing the idea of love in this piece.
All of this points to a theme of an innocent, perhaps even naive, love. But like every rose has its thorns, love too has its dangers. In mythology, Cupid’s arrows come in two forms: golden ones that cause love, and lead ones that repel it. Love, then, can be true and tender, like the feelings the girl holds, but it also carries the potential for pain. She clutches the letter close to her heart, exposing her vulnerability, yet her solemn expression as she looks at the dove suggests uncertainty. There is a profound sense of ambiguity in this painting. We don’t know if the dove will deliver the letter. We don’t know if her feelings will be returned. All she can do is wait and see what the Fates will decide, where the wind will carry the dove, and which of Cupid’s arrows will find its mark.

Nobody expects Sonic to ever become a therapist, ever. And just because he's the big hero it doesn't mean he himself doesn't need to touch grass too sometimes. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
