The New Norm!
It seems to be more normal nowadays to not be normal, for example more and more people are dressing in ways that separate them from crowds and that turn heads wherever they go. Mixing and matching colours and materials that in the past have never been seen together, however now compliment each other. Fashion really has taken a turn down a very original and unique path in recent years and has created a very large and inspiringly diverse, up to the minute, community of people.

Mobile phones were first invented in the early20th century, however they were mostly only used by workers such as engineers, or taxi drivers to contact emergency services. However these mobile phones were barely phones, as they were practically just two way radio devices. These mobile phones were often referred to a s 0G mobiles, whereas today’s phones are commonly 3G or 4G. However mobile phones were first used by the public in the very late 20th century and have been one of the largest trends ever since. People are now glued to their mobile phones and use them in practically every aspect of their lives.

Recently, living life like it used to be is a massive trend, this includes using retro items and wearing vintage clothing. However many people have begun taking Polaroid photos again and doing photography using classic vintage styles. For example the editing of a photo can often create a very effective vintage look and can make a photograph appear like it would have in the mid 20th century on an old fashioned Polaroid camera! This style has attracted a wide community of creative people and has rapidly become a trend.

An Australian businessman decided to build a replica of the ill-fated 1912 Titanic cruise ship. This was a 500 million dollar project and was announced in 2012. The design of the ship was planned to be almost identical to the original vessel, dubbed Titanic II. The detail will be so refined, even down to the dimension, architecture and layout. The ship will be able to accommodate over 2000 passengers and will be divided into first second and third class, as the original was. Although this does not appear to be the smartest idea, the Titanic II will feature modern day safety systems and navigation technology, including a sufficient number of life jackets and lifeboats for the passengers. Tickets for this experience are not yet available to the public, however the ship could set sail as early as 2022!

I carried out a Vox Pop, asking 21 random members of the public a series of questions about lifestyle trends and their opinions on the topic. A Vox Pop is a questionnaire, represented by the opinion of the public. The word Vox Pop is Latin for “The voice of the people” My Vox Pop was very successful, leaving me with many mixed thoughts and feelings about my topic. I successfully gathered views and opinions from a wide variety of people of all genders and of ages ranging from 11 to 77!

I asked people if they often followed trends and there was a very split response, however some people were unsure to what a trend even was and one person failed to respond to this question because of that. Many of the responses stated that they mostly followed trends based around either food, or fashion.
I was also interested in knowing the public’s view on the world in its present state. The responses were extremely truthful and very straight to the point, with most people having negative feelings towards the world today. Some described it as toxic, tragic and selfish! Here are some of my most intriguing responses:
“Not enough action being taken on issues”
“Too many wars”
“The rich need to lead as if they were poor”
“People have become greedy and selfish and people prioritise the wrong things in life, like drugs and luxuries, rather than having food on the table”
“We are exhausting natural resources and not doing enough to reverse global warming”
“There are two types of people in this world, those that want to save our planet and those who only care about having the latest iPhones, flash clothes and lip fillers”
Overall every single one of the responses I got were significantly negative and depressing.
However it is not all negative, I also wanted to know what people thought were the most positive aspects of the world. Here is what people thought:
Advances in medical research
Brexit
Technological improvements
Single use plastic being phased out
Recycling
Ocean clean up
Renewable energy
Activism
I was interested in knowing what was thought to be the most popular trends of the world, again I received very mixed and opposite opinions. This included:
Food (veganism)
Fashion and Beauty (mom jeans, fashion of the era, hair and beauty/pastel colours)
Social Media (Glued to our phones)
Technology (Needing the latest tech)
Music
Overall every single one of the responses I got were significantly negative and depressing.
Overall in my opinion it seems to be that the people of today’s world are too much like sheep and appear to just be following the new norm, resulting in lack of leaders and therefore a lack of positive change. The world is not all negative, it is simply what we make it.

Out with the new in with the old!
Trends from the late 20th century, also classed as classics, have made a massive comeback, bringing ‘Mom Jeans’, Baggy Shirts and many weird and wonderful patterns and vintage clothing. However clothing is not alone in making a popular return, retro record players and vinyl are also no longer a thing of the past!

Expressing your struggles and achievements through music is now what many young people spend their time doing. Creating music and aspiring to one day become famous musicians seems to be important and has rapidly become an extremely popular trend with millennials. Wanting your voice to be heard and your story to be told is currently a necessity to most people and what better way to do this than through songs!

Less is more! In recent years interior design has become more of a way to express your artistic abilities and imagination rather than simply a way of decorating your home. There is obviously a wide variety of different ways you can go with interior design, with many obscure and unique patterns, shapes and layouts to play around with. However the ‘less is more’ kind of appearance seems to be becoming a trend, especially with instagramers and bloggers who like to share their abilities and designs on social media.

Everybody now seems to want as much of the outdoors in their house as possible, placing plants in every corner, of every space, in every room. This has become a massive trend, with plants hanging in baskets, sitting on shelves and living in our homes with us. This is of course a very positive trend, as surrounding ourselves with more plants can often make us feel more healthy and fresh, or can simply just make a room look more alive!

“In years gone by it could take six months to a year for runway trends to hit the High Street. Now it can be as short as three weeks!” Carla Buzasi.
The trickle down theory is the complete opposite of the bubble up theory, it is when trends and styles are first introduced in fashion shows, then gradually trickle down to the shop shelves in your everyday high street stores! We will often see models sporting outrageous and fascinating outfits on the cat walks, however the majority of us do not see ourselves being able to pull these looks off, however this soon changes once these outfits start appearing in our high street stores and on high street models! This is the power of influence. In some cat walk shows a colour or a theme might be spotted and liked, influencing ideas that could work fo the season. This includes:
Marques Almeida - Ripped denim
Elsa Schiaparelli - Shoulder pads

Veganism is probably the largest current trend, many people (especially in recent years), choose to partake in this lifestyle, or just simply want to try it out for a month or two, however it is pretty hardcore and requires a lot of time and effort! Veganism is the practise of abstaining from the use of any animal products, particularly in diet, but also in the creation of products. If you are a follower of this lifestyle, you are most commonly known as a vegan. Many of us feel that animals are equal to humans and therefor should never be breed simply for their use to humans.

The bubble up theory is one of the newer fashion theories, this is when styles and trends are introduced into high street stores and then then gradually catch on and bubble up the ‘fashion food chain’ until they reach the top and appear in fashion shows such as London fashion week.
It was in 1976 when Westwood and McLaren defined the street culture of punk with Seditionaries. Punk fashion is the perfect example of a style that originated from the streets and is now paraded by models in world famous fashion shows! By the end of the 70’snVivienne Westwood was already considered a symbol of the British avant-garde and she showed her first cat walk presentation at Olympia I. London for Autumn/Winter 1981.

The 1980’s was a prime time for fashion, housing many of the boldest trends and styles, some more memorable than others. To stand out was the norm in the 80’s, this would mean hanging the brightest selection of beads round your neck, tearing gaping holes in any pair of jeans you could get your hands on, covering your body in jewellery, and perm after perm after perm! Colour coordination was not anybody’s main priority, anything was acceptable!
