Barnsley's history

Barnsley's most famous for its markets, brass bands and coal mining heritage.

in 1802 the Barnsley canal became a very important connection to the fire-calder navigation system. this gave the wool factories of Wakefield, Leeds, and Branford access to barnskleys coalfields.

miners strikes: in the 1980s barnsley became the centre of the minors strikes. this divided the mining communitiesnwith the district. in the end of the minors strikes all Barnsley's coal mines were closed down in 1994. this was a massive loss for the town and took the people a long time to come to terms with.

brass bands: barnsley is home to a tradition of brass bands. grimehtrope colliery band which is located in grime throe is the best known brass bands in Britain. it rose to fame bybeig in the film brassed off and is now at the royal college of music in London. they have performed in places such as Hyde Park, and ;picnic in the park.

Ian mcmilian: he writes a column in the Barnsley chronicle. he was nominated for a chair of poetry at Oxford university and appears on abc radio 4. he has a barnsley accent which is stafrting ti were off during younger generations, but is the most maintained Yorkshire accent.

kes: this was a dilm that was set and filmed in several villages in Barnsley. which include Lundwood and Monk Bretton. it also used local actors.

music scene: there is a massive scene of music surrounding barnsley which first reached its height during britpop years around 1997 due to its close proximity towards Sheffield and Manchester. two of the famous band members the arctic monkeys studied music at barnsley college. barnsley is home to several live music venues and hosts BOMfest an outdoor summer festival.

if activities aren’t your thing penistone is also home to multiple cafes, bars and restuarents.

cafes- the cafes in penistone are generations cafe bar, the loft coffee shop, cafe crème, cafe 121, julie’s cafe, chapeau, the hub community cafe, lighthouse play and craft cafe, greggs, cubley hall and the windmill coffee shop.

bars- the bars that create penistone night life are the new inn, the bridge, the cristello loung, cubley hall, vaults bistro and speakeasy, the old crown inn, penistone tap and brewhouse, ti amo, the crystal palace, the fountain pub and kitchen, and the hunts man

restaurants- home to many food places and takeaways which include ti amo which is italian, vault bistro and speakeasy, the new inn, cubley hall, cinnamon spice and the taste of india which are indians, canton house a chinese, penistone balti house which is takeaway, there is also 3 fish and chip shops

penistone paramount cinima-

penistone paramount is a community cinima and theatre in penistone. it shows all the big films released aswell as live shows and monthly orchestra concerts. it was built in 1914 and celebrations its 100th year in 2014. the paramount is owned by barnsley metropolitan council but operated by penistone town council. there is one single screen in the cinima with 344 seats.

penistone has its on foodball club which the local football team is called penistone church fc. penistone has a rich football hiritge which can be traced back to 1648. if your a fan of football you can watch multiple teams or there are also teams you or your children could try get involved with.

penistones history

penistone was first recorded in the doomsday book in 1086 although it appeared as pengestone.

starting in the medieval times the township was owned by someone named Ailric. it was razed in 1069 in the harrying of the north following the norman conquest. in the doomsday book following all this penistone is described as ‘waste’

wool- penistone was first known for the penistone cloth. the penistone cloth was a rough home spun cloth. home weavers would bring there cloth to an annual cloth fair until 1768 when a cloth hall was built so they could regulate the sales of cloth. d

buildings- several pre-19th century buildings have survived the longest standing is penistone church which is in the centre of penistone. ‘this is the grade I listed mediavel parish church, st john the baptist church’ there are also multiple things that have been rebuilt as there was a town centre redeveloped recently one of these is penistone market which was an oaken cruck barn. before this there was a historic livestock market but that was closed for this re-development.

railway- the railway is one of the main modes of public transport used to get in and out of penistone. the manchester, sheffield, lincolnshire railway opened on the 15th of july 1845 on a route via penistone. during the construction of this railway was the construction conditions where very difficult and this led to 32 men dying during the tunnels construction which included 28 from cholora. this opening was then followed by another railway line called penistone to huddersfield which opened on july 1st 1850. during todays time there is penistone railway station and is on the onisfone line this provided psssenger trains to huddersfield, barnsley snd sheffield. they are genially hourly in each direction. there are also bus services operating in the area by stagecoach yorkshire, south penning community transport, globe holidays and TM travel. these buses connect penistone with barnsley, holmfirth, sheffield, stocksbridge and thurgoland

economy- penistone had a thriving market although this slowed down slightly with the building of a tesco supermarket in 2011. now there is penistone farmers market which is a monthly farmers market which happens on every second saturday if the month and are held in the market cruck barn.

penistone radio station- penistone has its own radio station called penistone FM. which was formed in 2005. this radio station is non profit. there is also dearne FM which broadcasts to barnsley, penistone, and the dearne valley areas in south yorkshire.

events- penistone hosts multiple events throughout the year these are the annual mayors parade which is in june this consists of two concerts a parade and also a gala. during august the annual gathering of the lords mayors parade happens. this day includes a service at the church, followed by a parade around the town and films and music held at the paramount cinima. during the month of september penistone hosts penistone show which is an annual agricultural show it is always held on the second saturday of September\

history

the idea for the trail first originated from barnsley where the head office is now based. they started working on the trail in 1999. during the early days the development was boosted by a £5 million investment by the millennium commission. the trail officially opened in 2001 but wasn’t fully finished till 2004. the whole trail took £60 million to construct. Barnsley is responsible for the funding and promotion but the 27 local authorities whose areas run through are responsible for the management of the trail in their areas.

route

the main west-east trail starts at southport then goes south through the subburbsbof liverpool, then through widnes warrington and manchester. the route then crosses the peak district and heads up the longdendale valley to woodhead and then down through dunford bridge and penistone aswell as doncaster, selby, hessle, hull and hornsea.

there is also a north- south route trail that runs from leeds through wakefield and then passes through barnsley and crosses over the main trail in the dearne valley area . then it gird to sheffield before terminating at chesterfield. this route has several loops in south yorkshire

places on the trail

1. the runcorn bridge in halton is a smaller version of the sydney harbour bridge

2. sankey bridge was built between 1755 and 1757 making it the first canal of the industrial revolution

3. the highest point on the trans pennine trail is the peak district and reaches 435m above sea level.

4. barnsley is host to the wentworth castle gardens the only gardens in south yorkshire

5. in york on the trail there is a full scale model of the solar system. if you cycle the whole distance you will have travelled at 19 times the speed of light

6. st mary and all saint churches in chesterfield are famous for tgeee crooked spire. history reports that the reason for it is because when it was built unseasoned timber was used and no skilled craftsmen where available to build then due to the black death

7. in february 2002 the 100 millionth vehicle passed over the bridge

8. the toilets located in front of the king billy statue in hull have cisterns filled with water and goldfish

my theme- penistone

after much research my theme i decided on was my home penistone. i believe this theme gives me plenty of things to take inspiration from and is a theme im going to enjoy as it’s where i live and important to me.

penistone is a market town in the metropolitan borough of south yorkshire england. in 2021 it has a recorded population of 24,760.

cannon hall farm- cannon hall farm is a large family run farm attraction. its home to kindreds of animals. its also home to a massive playground the biggest in the north of England and largest maze in Europe. the farm shop is famous for its home produced beef, pork and lamb. aswell as an on site bakery. canon. Hall has endless fun with an indoor play area and restaurant.

cannon hall museum-cannon hall is a stunning Georgian county house museum set in 67o acres of historic parkland and a beautiful landscape garden.

pot house hamlet- this site has a cafe, boutique shops, animals to feed, garden centre and ;picnic areas. there are plenty of stunning walks a d cycle trail and pt house hamlet had a free car park.

Wentworth castle gardens- you can visit the ;parkland, gardens and cafe and went worth castle.

the Cooper gallery- this is a an art gallery full of stunning art for which o can also go for breakfast as there isa cafe inside.

Experience Barnsley muse a nd discovery centre- this is dedicated to the history and people of barnsley. visitors can uncover the series Barnsley has to offer that are told through artefacts and documents swell as films and recordings. this is perfect for kids and free.

The Lamproom theatre- this is the creative beatign heart of brbsley. this theatre holds many shows including landtomines and is loved by many people.

barnsley fc

Barnsley Football Club is a proffessionsl football club based in Barnsley. they compete in I the EFL league one which is the third their of the enlish football league after the premier league and championship. they go by the nickname "the tykes".

they where founded in 1887 by Reverend tiverton preedy and moved to Oakwell stadium the year after.they first played in the district league from 1890 and then the midland league after that from 1895. then joining the football league in 1889. barnsley has spend more seasons in the second their of English football than any other club in history. the club did come close to reaching the two devision in the early years such as 1922. from the thirties uo tot e fifties the club found them selves going back and fourth between the third and fourth division and in the sixties and seventies the stayed around the third and fourth devision struggling to get back to the top levels. however the eighties and nineties saw the club getting back on track, earn promotion and establish themselves as a strong devision.

brnslye is a market town in South Yorkshire. its the fourth largest settlement in South Yorkshire. in 2021 it had a population of 244,600. it is located between the cities of Sheffield snd msncheter. Barnsley's former industries include, linen, coal mining, glass making and textiles. there is so much history and culture rooted in barnsley.
