Memorial Day 2021

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.  Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season. On Memorial Day, think about how you can show your appreciation for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Attend a Memorial Day parade or event in your area. Visit a VA hospital. Display the US flag to salute those gave their lives for their nation's freedom. Elks pledge "So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them." The Elks National Veterans Service Commission takes that pledge one step further, and promises service to our nation's veterans and military members, with a special focus on service to those in need. Found in the Attic

Recently, as part of scavenging photos from the attic to digitally archive them, we came across this pamphlet -- "BPOE Elks National Service Commission, Annual Report, Chicago - 1967." This is made a little more meaningful as we just celebrated Memorial Day a few days ago (Monday, May 25, 2020) and as you may know, the "National Service Commission" was later renamed to "Elks National Veterans Service Commission" in 1995 - you can read more at "Elks: A Concise History." Armed Forces Day 2020

Armed Forces Day, a U.S. federal holiday, was first observed on May 20, 1950 to honor Americans serving in the five U.S. military branches -- the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard, following consolidation of the military services in the U.S. Department of Defense. It was intended to replace the separate Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Days, but the separate days are still observed. On this day we express our thanks to those who currently service in the five U.S. military branches. Consider saying Thank You to those you know are serving. If you own a business, consider doing something thoughtful to show your appreciation. Elks pledge "So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them."
