One Th1ng
our first project in Applied 2 was to created a booklet on any topic of our choosing, so I decided to focus my project on Orca whales
Research
I first started off with some surface knowledge about orcas, nothing super in depth- just a base to get started.
Things like diet, social structures, conservation, etc.
Then I very loosely planned out each topic i wanted covered in pages and arranged them more or less how i wanted them to be ordered.
now it was time for the more detailed research. I made sure to cover every topic i wanted to touch on, and keep the references i used so i could credit them later. at this point I am thinking of the order of the pages more and how they connect to each other.
Layout and Designing
I wanted the finished product to have a corporate feel, like something you would see getting handed out at a marine park; while the actual content of the book is a bit darker and truthful than what seaworld would probably hand out.
I started with some thumbnail sketches for the cover, which I liked, but they just werent clicking for me. I moved on to the idea of basing my layout around the shapes of the patterns that orca have.
Originally the shapes were going to be filled in with a dark blue colour, but I thought using images clipped into them would be much more visually interesting
This is one of my favourite pages, I was struggling on a way to format a list of all the orcas in the world currently in captivity- when i thought "wouldnt it be cool if it was just all over the background?" and it is kinda cool so I did it.
Type
its type time.
Fonts used; Peridot PE Variable and Stevie Sans
I though a nice sans serif type would fit well with my faux corporate theme.
I focused a lot on type hierarchy and how the page directs the viewers eye from one block of text to the next. I also got kinda picky about type letting and baselines, making sure different sized text blocks line up. its not 100% perfect but most are pretty close

Our final project was focused on creating a visual identity for ourselves and our brand. I decided to create an imaginary Tattoo studio titled "Fauna"
The first part I worked on was the logo, Ive become pretty attached to the image of a deer as my logo, so I wanted to recreate that in a fresh and elegant style. Originally, I just created a simple logo that was only antlers, but I wanted to shift that into something new and interesting. I found an image of a buck running that I really liked and simplified its shape down into elegant, minimalist strokes.
This is the main Logo, but I also created a second version that can be used for smaller designs and applications
I am pretty happy with the final design, it has a lot of movement but is still simple enough to be instantly recognizable
For the style guide, I wanted to create a simple but refined style that could be flexible and used in a wide range of applications. I decided to Use Utopia and Monarchs as my two main fonts.
Utopia is a simple but bold font that has lots of different styles which allows for a wide range of uses and appearances, which I really enjoy.
Monarcha is a gorgeous font that has a unique and artistic feel without sacrificing legibility. It is perfect for use as my main body font.
My guides main colours are Paynes Grey, Sage Green, and Quinacridone Magenta. These colours are all very earthy, without being too bright and overwhelming. I love the way they work together and don't overpower the page.
I had a lot of fun designing the layout of my style guide, I liked experimenting with grids and learning about type letting and what a difference it can make to the professionalism of a design.
Of all the pages, the Layout of this one is my favourite.
The final part of this project was to create some mockups, which I always enjoy making do to how easy it is. I chose to create a mockup of an outdoor sign for fauna and a tote bag, that way I could show examples of both types of the logo and how they could each be utilized.

Overall, I would say I spend around 35- 40hrs in total on this project, and I am satisfied with the end project.

Now that I had all the photos i needed edited and ready to go, it was time to figure out my layout.
Vogue uses a very simple and clean design. They usually stay to a neutral colour pallet, and leave plenty of whitespace. The magazines design focuses so much on the typography of each pages layout.
It was surprisingly difficult to replicate vogues style in a way that i was happy with. With such a minimal design, each aspect of the page matters that much more towards the whole piece.
I used layouts from past Vogue editions as inspiration, taking bits and pieces of the designs to mold into something new that could still be recognized as vogue.
Im very very happy with the end result, and after at least 40 hours and $20 spend on this project, Id say it turned out pretty good.

The third photoshoot was definitely the most experimental of the 3. I was in calgary visiting my friend, so we didnt have much to work with for time, sets, or even makeup. So we used what we had.
We played with long exposures, streaky imagery, and the cameras flash to create trippy and striking images that turned out fantastic. Laura, my model, had an old half-deflated balloon that we used in a few photos. The complex structure and patterns created by the balloon made for some gorgeous pictures.

The second photoshoot was more of a simple streetwear vibe, with less experimental angles and clothes. Me, Jenna, and Morgan all went downtown and took some candids of them crossing the street together, sitting on steps and benches, and generally just hanging out.
I struggle taking photos in such a public setting like this, but being with friends made it much easier. We got lots of amazing photos, but it was narrowed down to 3 for the zine.

The first photoshoot was with my friend and former classmate Jenna. I wanted to take photos that had a light, pastel-y spring vibe. I had a vintage victorian corset dress sitting in my closet for about a year, and knew it would be perfect for the shoot.
We bought some fake flowers from the dollarstore and wove them into her hair as best we could, then went down to the river at police point park. Jenna is naturally good at modelling, she had an intense expression and is amazing at understanding the best poses and angles for the perfect picture.
I took around 400 photos for this shoot, but only use about 4 in the actual zine.
I decided early on Jenna would likely be on the cover, as this photoshoot was my favourite out of all of them.

For our second assignment, our class was to create a “love letter” to any brand of our choosing. We could make anything we wanted really, as long as it adopted the brands style and energy. I originally chose a local business, but after understanding the assignment more I changed to Vogue Magazine.
I wanted to create my own fashion magazine, one that would include my own photoshoots, articles, and graphic design. All in the style of Vogue.
I had about 8 photoshoots planned originally, but only ended up having time for 3.

For part 2 of this project, we made posters advertising the art and design program using a metaphor. I had a few good ideas, but decided I liked my haircut idea best. I like the composition and simplicity of this poster more than any of the others.
I wanted the design to be simple and bold, to get the idea across quickly and efficiently. I used a bold, blocky sans serif font with a high contrast to the simple background to make it really pop.

Applied art and design Project 1 pt 1
for this project, we were to redesign the covers of already existing albums and put our own spin on them. We were to use the concepts of appropriation, pastiche, and parody to create the new covers.
my initial concepts were
Deftones - White Dude (white pony)
instead of the pony silhouette its replaced by a man, and the songs are changed to stereotypical things white dudes enjoy
Kendrick Lamar - DARN. (DAMN.)
Kendrick Lamar is replaced by a child, kids bob inspired (credits to Ryan who came up with the idea)
2ded - Greatest Hits (2pac)
the album art is replaced by a picture of 2pac's funeral, or the picture that was taken the night of his murder.
I ended up choosing the Deftones album.
