Week 12 (30/10/23):
7 min drawings -
In the 7-minute drawing session, I aimed to build in all noticeable anatomy to help with structuring the model's stance and pose. I paid close attention to the areas of the clavicle and pelvic box to accurately portray tilted areas and the weight leg.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10 min drawing -
While doing this session, I tried to depict this laying-down pose using the help of wrapping lines and anatomical features to help with accuracy in length. I built in tonally different shadow shapes, making sure to also include obvious dimple landmarks and to further develop the areas of the feet.
Tumblr media
15 min drawing -
With this pose, I focused on first accurately sketching up the leg in consideration of foreshortening, as well as the tilt and lean of the upper torso. I tried my best to build in the shadow shapes of the face using one tone for harmony, however, I could further improve on sketching in details of the feet and cloth surface.

Week 11 Homework:
Master copies with clothing -
In these drawings I focused mainly on the tonal and shadow qualities of the master drawing, making sure to rightly portray areas where there is a greater volume of folds. I could improve by going over and shading in darker areas of the clothing more to enhance the lighting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Self-portrait study -
In this self-portrait study, I took inspiration from Augustus John’s portrait, in its colour palette and style. I mainly aimed to capture my expression and skin tones however I could improve on using the colour of the paper as a midtone along with the proportions of the face.

Week 11 (23/10/23):
1 min drawings -
Within this short time, I was able to draw in more structural details of the full body, making sure the volumes of each shape were consistent with the model. I could improve by making the upper torso shape more fluid in order to account for movement and the anatomical features within.
Tumblr media
7 min drawings -
In these drawings, I made sure to mark in the anatomy in order to account for the width of the body alongside drawing in areas of the clavicle, ribcage, knees and pelvic box. I could take it a step further by dramatising the tilt of the hip in accordance with the weight leg, making edits to the basic rectangle shape.
Tumblr media
10 min drawings -
While focusing on the folds of clothing and facial features in these drawings, I tried my best to provide a general depiction of the model's pose while working tonally to emphasise areas of folds and facial shadows. I could improve by keeping the shadows of the face in a singular and consistent tone to create a sense of harmony within the features.

Week 10 Homework:
Fabric studies -
After completing the sketches of each fabric style, I understood how each fabric's quality and appearance matched their respective labels. I could have improved the outcome of the colour sketch by assigning specific colours to highlight light and dark areas instead of approaching it randomly.
Tumblr media
Gesture drawings -
In these gesture drawings, I aimed to capture the fluid form and volume within the model's pose, making sure to include obvious points of anatomy.
Tumblr media
Head constructions -
As I copied drawings from Andrew Loomis' head studies, I was able to improve on the foundational sketch to later add in the facial features. While completing this, I referenced my practice with the head gesture drawings from week 2 as a basis for completing these constructions.
Tumblr media
Self-portrait -
In this week's self-portrait, I experimented with using colour pencil on tonal paper to capture my expression, trying to make use of the paper as a mid-tone while constructing the shadows. I could improve by going over the areas of dark a little more, especially in the area below my hairline.

Week 10 (16/10/23):
2 min drawings -
Within this time I marked a very general structure of the models pose, mainly focusing on the tilts of the centreline and the position of the legs. I could stay more consistent in drawing the anatomy of identifiable areas such as the ribcage and pelvis to give the body a sense of width and structure.
Tumblr media
10 min drawings -
With these seated drawings I tried to depict the tilt of the pelvis in relation to the weight and squash of the body as the model was seated. While drawing in the foundational markings, I could improve by drawing in the entirety of the body before building on the arms and legs, especially if they are obscuring the full body.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
12 min drawings -
In this practice, I marked areas of tilt within the body and pelvis in order to give a sense of the weighted leg and fluidity of the pose. I could further my depiction by lightly marking in my foundation sketches to make room to capture the light grooves and curves of the body.

Week 9 Homework:
Copy of anatomy slides -
Through these copies, I familiarised myself with the anatomy of the knee by studying both its simplified and detailed forms and placing it within the context of the leg. Sketching the different positions of the bones in the feet allowed me to visualise the impact of each movement on their respective features.
Tumblr media
Gesture drawings -
With these gesture sketches, I experimented slightly with using colour pencils to draw details, making sure to sketch the foundational lines lightly to later refine. I tried to work tonally, sticking to a light pressure to create volume and shape the model's pose.

Week 9 (9/10/23):
2 min drawings -
In this week's quick drawings, I was able to set down the foundational lines for the model's pose, using lines to map out areas of the arm, legs and centreline. I could improve on this by not rushing into developing the legs' mass as some seem inconsistent in width and length.
Tumblr media
7 min drawings -
With this set of practice, I focused more on working in the anatomy of the knee and leg, noting the change in angle and shape when positioned differently. To better these markings I could focus more on shaping the volume of the leg to encompass the grooves of the thighs and knee area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10 min drawings -
While drawing these, I aimed to fully capture the dynamic movement of weight and form shown in the body, drawing attention to obvious markings in the pelvis, scapula and rib cage. I could build more upon the detail and form of the feet along with the midtones of the shadows to fully capture the volume of the figure.

Week 8 Homework:
Gesture thumbnails -
As I sat down in Pitt Street Westfield, I drew the movement of people throughout the shopping centre. I could further improve by adding more tonal qualities to each individual along with making the shapes more fluid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anatomy from handouts -
Through my studies of the arm and wrist, I gained an understanding of how movement affects the bones in those areas. Sketching the simplified features both inside and outside the arm's mass helped me visualise the appearance of each pose.
Tumblr media
Still life: near and far -
I experimented with the mediums of ink on white paper and charcoal pencil on tonal paper to produce these drawings. I tried to capture areas of light and dark and how areas of this differ through a change in distance and perspective. I could further improve by sketching in more areas of dark to fully encapsulate the volume of each subject.

Week 8 (25/9/23):
2 min drawings -
During these 2 minute sketches I was able to mark down all the structural features, focusing mainly on the area of the scapula and leg as their positions are affected by the movement of the arms and legs. To further improve I could exaggerate the twist of the body more as well as make sure the torso is of accurate length.
Tumblr media
5 min drawings -
In this practice, I made sure to create light foundational markings that I could later go over and edit. I mainly emphasized the pelvic box area, but I need to work on building up more of the shadow shapes, identifying the correct light source, and staying consistent in developing the tones.
Tumblr media
10 min drawings -
I tried my best to develop more of the hands and the tonal values of arms, making sure to fully capture the movement and angle of the lower body in conjunction with the torso area. During this time I could also have included more detailed drawings of the feet and facial features along with, marking in with a simple line, the surface the model is laying on to give a sense of weight and position.

Week 7 Homework:
Anatomy and features studies -
Drawing these studies helped me become familiar with the structural features of the clavicle. By sketching it in detail and in simplified form, I gained a clear understanding of how to apply this feature to my later sketches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tonal self-portrait -
I applied shading to my drawing and made an effort to use the same technique and variety of tones as the Vanderpol features. To improve my skills, I plan on experimenting with different expressions and materials to bring out more highlights in my future drawings.

Week 7 (18/9/23):
1 min drawings -
In these quick studies, I captured the volume and positioning of the body quite quickly although these drawings lack accuracy in terms of depicting the landmarks. Despite providing directional guidance, my representation of the centreline is quite rigid, making it difficult to construct the volume of the body around it.
Tumblr media
5 min drawings -
In my initial drawings, I did not incorporate many features of the shoulder girdle, however, after receiving feedback I was able to actively draw it in, aiding towards the volume of the shoulder area. I was able to identify the points of the scapula in back poses along with simplifying the clavicle to its basic shapes to capture the mass of the area.
Tumblr media
10 min drawings -
Further into the session, I became more comfortable with drawing the elements of the model, capturing the turn of the body along with shading in shapes to depict the areas of the turning point. I could improve by determining the direction of the light source and shading in areas of importance, not worrying too much about building in mid-tones.

Week 6 Homework:
Drawing features -
As I completed the copies of the features, I was able to discern what types of shapes and foundational lines should be drawn for the different features. Using my practice with the copies, I drew my own features which could be further improved on by shading some slight shading to create a fuller sense of depth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gesture thumbnails -
While in Manly, I was able to draw some of the general gestural features of the people passing by. While most of the positions take on a blocky form, I tried my best to communicate pose and gesture in these drawings.

Week 6 (11/9/23):
1 min drawings -
This week I was able to capture the full length of the body and general movement of the model in the quick one-minute sketches. A point of improvement could be to use a lighter pressure when making my markings as well as adding in some wrapping circles to hint at the volume of the body.
Tumblr media
5 min drawings -
Drawing these poses, I did well in depicting the position of the arms and the arch of the back as aided by the markings of the centreline and circles to picture the elbow. I could improve by being more confident in my outlining of the foundational sketches as some areas are slightly jagged while also sparing some time to mark in some facial features.
Tumblr media
10 min drawings -
In these fine line drawings, I allowed myself time to apply varied pressured line marks to produce fluid outlines as well as emphasise the pelvic points to highlight the turn of the hip. However, some of the proportions of the model’s pose could be more accurately drawn in consideration of foreshortening along with some variation in the direction of shading to add further depth.

Week 5 Homework:
Back torso studies -
In doing these studies, I was able to acquaint myself with the anatomy of the back torso, adding labels and names to points of interest that have been highlighted in my previous sketches such as the infraspinatus. Alongside this, I was able to picture the direction of muscle movement within a resting upright position, which may aid in the accuracy of my future sketches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Master copy -
While completing the master copy, I utilised the techniques learnt from class to build up a foundation and add volume and tone to the sketch. Next time, I could use different materials such as tonal paper and red pencil to experiment with different techniques and styles to build in more highlights.

Week 5 (4/9/23):
1 min drawings -
This week I felt as though I was able to capture the fluidity and entirety of the pose in a shorter amount of time compared to the previous weeks. To improve this even more, I could focus on sketching in the legs as simple lines to capture direction and length instead of assuming the volume of the shape using cylinders.
Tumblr media
6 min drawings -
In these sketches, I did well in building upon the foundational basic-shape markings to clarify the volume, position and anatomy of the model. Next time, I could work on sketching in the scapula in more detail along with marking anatomy in order of importance, specifically the weight leg.
Tumblr media
10 min drawings -
Completing these drawings, I was able to capture the essence of the pose as well as more accurately depict the length of the leg. However, I could improve my understanding of the overlapping of basic forms and how that may affect the position of the ribcage. Alongside this, I could spend more time identifying the turning point and shading it to appear more three-dimensional.

Week 4 Homework:
Front torso anatomy studies -
Completing these studies was highly beneficial in aiding towards my understanding of the front torso anatomy along with the terminology associated with such areas. I could improve by planning out the shapes to reflect the size of each anatomical part as much as possible to make the body shape seem more realistic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tonal sketch of person -
Taking reference from Andrew Loomis’ tonal thumbnails, I made sure to distinguish areas of light, mid-tones and dark as I drew my mother watching television. I first began by identifying the light source and further built-in tones using 4B and 6B pencils. Upon reflection, I could improve on creating a better foundation accurate in its proportions and position, as her neck and hands were more relaxed in the live reference.

Week 4 (28/8/23):
2 min drawings -
This week, I was able to identify and draw up all landmarks in a shorter period of time, allowing me more time to refine details regarding the shape and volume of the body. To improve, I could take more time thinking about the composition of props/models across the page and holding my pencil at an angle to make my markings appear more fluid as my drawings seem quite rigid.
Tumblr media
5 min drawings -
Within these sketches, I captured the essence of the pose by laying down all landmarks, focusing primarily on the position of the ribcage. However, in some instances, the curve of my centreline did not accurately represent the intensity of the tilt in the pose which in turn, made the body lack a sense of balance and structure.
Tumblr media
10 min drawings -
While sketching these poses, I made sure to keep in mind the importance of efficiently drawing up the key points and marking out the areas where the turning point is most visible. Despite this, some of the proportions surrounding the leg feel shorter than reality and I could improve by identifying the key areas where shadow shaping occurs to accurately shade into the most similar intensity.
