If there's BDSM involved in Devil's Minion I really, really hope that it'll be Armand performing it on Daniel and not the contrary.
Idk, other than it feeling a total different thing from the book, it makes me uneasy imagining Armand in that position with Daniel, whom contrary to Louis, he's supposed to be the person he feels safe with.
And maybe it's also ebogo? I don't hate the actor, he's doing an incredible job and I love the character, it's just that he tends to downplay things (Marius accident in a recent interview for example, I don't think someone who wears Anne Rice tshirts and always brings up devil's minion hasn't yet read TVA or at least doesn't know what Marius did, I mean it even popped up in an episode!).
And media just needs more bottom old men representation 👀
I'd like to know yours and @cbrownjc opinion on it, since they're a dm master thinker and both of you got great conception of the books and the series.
Hmm. I think Eric ... does not so mach "not know" things as that he is old enough to be able to differentiate very well between fiction and reality, and he has lived.
I mean that Marius thing is funny on the one hand... but he didn't get to explain why he wanted to "be" Marius either, right? A thousands-years old being, who has more or less mastered immortality. Set that in relation to Eric not being the youngest anymore, for example...
But I digress.
You asked about the BDSM part and I... am torn.
I mean, early Devil's Minion is a hunt, a chase, then segueing into more. A lot of things happen before Armand can be "safe" with Daniel. Even in the books I am not sure if that actually happens before that short comment in the last books, because... it's complicated.
Apart from that I would argue that the stigma of BDSM is actually that, namely what you insinuate here, Armand not being safe with Daniel if Daniel performs it?! But safe and consensual kink navigation IS IMPORTANT and it needs a LOT of trust.
What Louis and Armand had was not that, not really. Louis never trusted Armand, and neither did Armand trust Louis, not like that, or else all that manipulation and tinkering would not have been necessary. They used the framework of BDSM as is evident in the Dubai bedroom and the "umbrella scene", but it is not a thing of trust, but one of dominance play, as Jacob has commented on, them using the sub-dom-dynamic.
Which is fine, in and by itself, no shade per se.
But I think DM will be quite different.
IF they go there for DM then it will be something borne from understanding I think. This Daniel is older, he has "seen" much more. He knows much more. Past DM notwithstanding (and it might very well play into it all as well, though we cannot be sure yet as to how exactly), but the present day DM is a curious amalgamation of understanding and defiance, and... spite, and especially that last part will be hugely interesting I think, especially when it comes to pre-existing conditions as @cbrownjc has also talked about.
And THAT, in turn, might lead to a lot of understanding between Armand and Daniel, eventually.
And understanding, combined with love, will lead to trust.
And if you trust someone, you can let yourself fall.
And that... shifts the whole BDSM dynamic then, massively.
Also - top/bottom have not much to do with anything, I know fandom likes to equate dominance to top, but that is just a sexual preference, and reality does not conform to fandom tropes.
To quote Bryan Fuller: (when in doubt) - they flip.

So I found out yesterday that “taking turns driving across the Golden Gate Bridge” is actually a sexual euphemism for switching.
Lestat was insulting Louis’ sex life with Armand and Louis countered by saying they were actually quite giving and playful with each other.
Reminder that again, they are talking about this in front of their LAWYERS. At the DEAD OF NIGHT.

What did Armand die of ? (analysis/theories)
So in the books , (pre-turning) Armand was dying of poisoning, while Daniel was dying of alcohol poisoning. But now in the show, they are both implied to have been dying of a terminal illness . Parkinson’s for Daniel, and some unknown illness for Armand.
I think the biggest (possible) hint of Armand's past illness - is the fact that his eyes shake from side to side (unlike other vamps). It looks almost identical to “pendular nystagmus” (which is usually caused by a neurological condition). And this symptom can be exacerbated by stress and anger ...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Theory 1) Cancer
This crossed my mind because when Louis mentions being buried by rocks , he says “if you took an x ray it would look like little cancers” (referring to the skin indentations left by the rocks). The camera pans to Armand looking angry as he retorts “he could remove them any time he wanted to.” Then there’s an awkward silence at the table as Daniel looks at Armand.
Tumblr media
Daniel also in the 70s compared marriage to “cancer.” And then Armand pretty much says since he’d be so miserable getting married- he should just die then. If he did have cancer - it would probably piss him off when people compare their problems to it .
And karposi sarcoma ,which Daniel wrote essays about is a type of cancer . In s1 there was also the man with cancer who begged Lestat, Claudia, and Louis to turn him.
Tumblr media
Cancer could have caused the loss of appetite, and loss of muscles /fat (that Armand already associated with his illness). And if the cancer was neurological it could have caused the pendular nystagmus too.
Also, I know Louis called Armand "metronomic" because his schedule was so regimented. But, metronomic therapy is also a treatment for cancer .
Tumblr media
Theory 2) Syphilis
Tumblr media
Syphilis was rampant during the Venetian- renaissance. And sadly given the fact Marius p*mped him out , he would have sadly been more susceptible to develop the illness.
“latent syphilis” can also remain dormant for years or even decades (so after someone is infected, they could be asymptomatic for years ). So sadly, Armand could have also gotten it in the brothel even before meeting Marius. 'latent syphilis' if left untreated will eventually lead to ‘tertiary syphilis’ . This is the final stage of the disease . (At this stage the illness is no longer contagious) . Tertiary syphilis can develop into 3 subtypes - one subtype is ‘neuro-syphilis’ which can cause pendular nystagmus (*eye shaking), mood swings, loss of appetite/weight loss , etc . (Armand did mention he lost weight when he was stricken with illness).
Tumblr media
Also Armand developing syphilis would have interesting parallels to the aids crisis . Both were stds that many people at the time attributed as a 'divine punishment' for 'immoral sexual behavior'.
Tumblr media
“During the Venetian Renaissance, syphilis was a significant public health concern... leading to widespread fear and social stigma.” (Similar to the aid's crisis). Dm was also set during the backdrop of the aids crisis, and Daniel even reported about the aids crisis in the show. Not to mention Daniel reported on karposi sarcoma - a complication of aids - which leads to lesions internally and externally (similar to the lesions that can occur with syphilis).
In the books the poison did cause burns/ swelling marks on Amadeo’s skin -that Marius healed right before his turning . And syphilis can cause skin rashes/ lesions(so Marius could have theoretically just healed that symptom before turning him ).
But if his skin appeared normal while ill (that doesn’t mean he didn’t have the condition) because not everyone with syphilis develops that symptom.
Theory 3) : Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Probably, the least likely out of the 3. This thought primarily crossed my mind simply because Armand looks like he has episodes of “pendular nystagmus”. Which is most commonly caused by ms . And in the initial pilot , Daniel was supposed to have m.s. (but they later changed it to Parkinson's). So who knows... they could have decided to give it to Armand instead.
Contrary to popular belief (the most common time of diagnosis is between 20-50 years old). Depending on which variation of the condition you have: someone can appear asymptomatic, with episodes of the more classic symptoms occurring periodically .
It can also cause loss of appetite and weight loss .And since it’s an autoimmune disorder … I think if he did have ms he wasn’t technically dying from it - but couldn’t fight off an infection or cold. Since ms (in some not all individuals) can weaken the immune system.
Tumblr media
Plus, there were no antibiotics/traditional meds back then for common ailements. People died of common illnesses that a lot of us could have easily survived today. Having a weakened immune system would have only made it more likely to occur.
Any other theories for what illness he had? Besides poisoning, like in the books?

Old Man Daniel being a survivor of the AIDS epidemic means so much to me.
Like
Here is this grumpy old man who is dismissive of his queer experiences. It was a place to get high. Fulfilling the social contract. An excuse, that's all. He's into counter cultures after all.
But Louis and Armand changed his life forever.
Should Devil's Minion have happened in the past, that crosses into the AIDS epidemic. San Francisco, the beating heart of the gay community in America in the 70s, a ghost town in the 80s. That's where we run into Daniel. He would get into a relationship that meant death for so many. Running away from the monster that he loves that could symbolize his own sexuality. Finally embracing it when he realizes the monster is what he finds fascinating. The fear is what makes it worth it. The only relationship he dedicated himself to a man, the one that would have convinced him he loved men too. That it wasn't just for the high.
In the books, Daniel didn't make it. He was sick, and dying. Could he have died of AIDS? In the arms of his male lover? It's open to interpretation. He was turned, stuck forever in his early 30s and a ghost of his former self.
But Old Man Daniel? Who wrote a book called The Shadow on Your Skin about the crisis because those were his people. The people he knew, even if now he could pretend he was never a part of it. He can claim he was just an observer.
But if vampirism is a metaphor for queerness... if Devil's Minion did happen... this is an elder queer. One who survived because they were shoved in the closet by the one who loved them. Because they loved them alive more than dead. Because some of the people who made it did so because they were there for support, because the fear was too much.
Rolin Jones you have the opportunity of a lifetime.

IWTV Musings - Tentative Timeline (Pt6b: 1300s - 1900s) - AMC Only (S1 - S2)
This timeline is to help me keep track of AMC's dates that Lestat & Armand slung around in S1 & S2. What irks me is that not only have these dates been changed from the book canon, but they also don't line up with what we know from the show itself. Unreliable narrators are all over this show, and contrary to popular opinion, Armand AND Lestat are no exception.
Pt4a (text) & Pt4b (graph) covered TVC's dates from 1700s-1800s
Pt5a (text) & Pt5b (graph) covered TVC’s dates from 1300s - 1600s.
Pt6a (text) & Pt6b (graph) tracks AMC’s S1 & S2 version of dates from 1300s - 1920s.
The full text breakdown is here:
If anyone's got different dates/theories, feel free to share, cuz AMC confuses the mess outta me with their swiss cheese chronology.
