“I won’t make you do anything in public” she promised. “The only reason i wanted us to be here for this lesson was so I could be near books when we ran into issues. Unlike you, I didn’t think we’d succeed right away” she added the last part with a playful smile so Galinda didn’t think she expected failure but just that this was part of the process.
“You can help me look if you’d like” she nodded surprised Galinda wanted to stay in the library “or if you have other class work to do I don’t mind looking alone, might actually help me figure something out a little quicker” she mentioned “not that you slow me down but, I just might be able to find it faster alone” she added awkwardly not wanting to Galinda to think she was trying to refuse her help.
Magic Lessons
The week after Elphaba bought the sorcery book for Galinda they decided on their study schedule. They’d use their free periods Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays to work on new things. Elphaba read the first few chapters then asked Galinda to summarize them for her. She felt a bit weird assigning her friend homework, but Galinda insisted she would do anything Elphaba thought would help and in this case Elphaba had to see how much of the theory and concept Galinda understood so she could try and teach her. So Elphaba asked that Galinda have her paper ready for her on Wednesday morning so they could start their lessons after breakfast.
Elphaba knew Galinda was excited, she was too honestly. It was a great way for her to spend more time with her friend and help her achieve something she’s always wanted. She hoped if she could get some physical magic out of Galinda, however small. So that Madame Morrible would see the benefit of adding her to the seminar.
Elphaba also found that reading the book from a different author than Morrible’s books seemed to help her steady her magic a bit which was great. She’d only had one class since reading it but her magic seemed a bit stronger that day, a little more sure.
Elphaba was usually waiting for Galinda to finish getting ready so they could go to breakfast together, but when she came out do the bathroom Galinda was practically bouncing in the middle of the room. “Excited?” She asked with an adoring smile. “I’ve never seen you ready so early” she teased as she went to her desk to get her bag and put her things for the first half of the day inside.

Elphaba nodded “it might be helpful, yours might not feel similar though so we don’t want to get too focused on that feeling in case it’s differ t for you” she answered sort of absentmindedly as she thought about options
“I never said I didn’t want you to look good” she laughed “just that maybe you can take fifteen minutes from that to do the meditation or other exercises. You don’t have to feel silly it’s just a way to connect with yourself and feel the energy flowing through you to connect with it. It helped me a lot” she added as she closed a notebook she’d written some notes in, things to look up or try and study in the mean time.
“Now, I don’t know I guess we can go to breakfast or if you want to hang out here I can grab a few books that might be helpful, but I don’t think we have enough time to get too deep into anything”

Elphaba grinned at Galinda’s excitement at being her best student. She always tries to encourage her friend accidentally and in ways that don’t pertain to her looks or socks status since she knows she doesn’t get it elsewhere and sure Galinda might not be a great student, but she has a lot of heart when she cares about something and that’s very important.
“Well that’s where they keep the books, I can’t research without books on the subject” she reminded her “but it should just be a few days while I gather my thoughts she ideas and see how they stack up against what’s in the books. Then we can practice or do lessons anywhere” she promised,
“Yes dear, I know you are extremely busy at nights, we’ll just have to find a way to squeeze it in as best we can”

“You won’t distract me” she assured her with a smile. “You’ll be working on your magic while I work on my homework, since you finish your homework so quickly.” She joked . She knew Galinda got bored of homework quickly and tended to do other things while she worked on hers.
“Well” Elphaba considered “you’re my only student which means you’re the best in my class” she grinned “top marks from me. How’s it feel to be the best student in class?” She asked with a grin.
“Then we keep trying” she nodded “I’ll figure out what our next focus will be once I do some research. I might need to spend a little extra time in the library” she explained to her friend “I’m sure you’ll love that” she joked. “We can try the meditation next time we have a quiet moment back in our room. I’ll show you what I do and you can try it when you feel comfortable”

“Galinda” Elphaba reached across to take her hand “it’s been a few days and I’ve mild attempt . This is going to be more work than just wanting it to work” she told her gently “I’ve been in the class for a few months and I can’t just do everything I want to. I still fail most days when I’m in class, it’s a lot of work to get magic to work the way you want it to”
“If it’s important to you then it’s important to me” Elphaba assured her “I don’t mind the extra work and time as long as you still want to do it. Besides I think it’s kind of fun to see if I can figure this out. I enjoy the work and I enjoy the time I get spend with you while we figure it out”

“Galinda, we have to keep trying. We aren’t going to stop after one lesson with no results” Elphaba informed her. “If you want to learn how to use magic we will figure it out. I will do everything I can to make that a reality for you, but only if you’re willing to do the work. I am” she pointed out “are you willing to work on that with me?” She asked her.
“I’ll help as much as I can if it’s something that’s important to you” she told her earnestly

“It’s kind of a mediation where you just sit quietly and try and let energy and things flow through you to try and find your magic and how it speaks to you.” Elphaba explained. “Maybe not the best did the library, but in your free time when you alone in our room or want to try it I can give you some tips and suggestions that I used to connect a bit”she explained.
“I also want to look more into ways to figure out your magic, and different ways to try and feel it. Maybe I can look for some more books for us to read, so we have somewhere to go after this” Elphaba was telling Galinda and she was also sort of just thinking out loud. It was sort of like a research paper or a mystery she wanted to solve, almost fun. But she knew Galinda would be disappointed that today didn’t result in anything positive.

Elphaba actually snorted when Galinda told her the title of her essay “sorry” she sobered up quickly. “Interesting” she nodded thinking about any magic wands she’s seen, which wasn’t many. But she supposed they could have something other than a point.
“Well what would you like to do now?” She asked her “I think we still need to work on finding your magic and how it works but I’m not sure that we can do it today. Maybe we can do some channeling exercises? They help me focus and do better with magic skills”

“A wand?” Elphaba asked sort of surprised by the suggestion. She didn’t use one so that didn’t really cross her mind. “I guess it couldn’t hurt, even with a wand we’d still need to figure out how to access your magic, but I guess it’s worth a shot” she nodded, she pulled a notebook out of her bag and made a note about wands to look up later and do some research on since she didn’t know much aging them.
“I think we should find out more about them, I don’t know much at all” she spoke outlook as she thoughts you?” She asked “I remember you mentioned an essay that first day when you were speaking to Madame Morrible, what was it about?” She asked

“That was my magic” Elphaba confirmed with a nod “that’s what it feels like when I try to use it” she explained “but I didn’t know that until recently. I didn’t come in with this information I had to find it” she told Galinda “and it took time and work. So don’t be too discouraged”
“The only thing we can do now, is keep reading about different types of magic and keep trying to connect to yours to see how it operates, it’s going to be different than mine and different than Madame Morrible’s. We will keep looking.” She assured her “don’t be sad just because it didn’t happen today. Okay?” She asked “let’s do some research, while we’re here see if there’s anything about connecting or finding magic and what ways there are to do that.” She suggested “I thing your book has some good things to say, let’s see if there are any others in the library. What do you think?”

“That’s okay” Elphaba assured her. “Nothing about this is easy. If it was everyone would do it and it wouldn’t be special.” She reminded her. She knew Galinda would have a hard time with this part of it, she sure did, but at least she knew what her magic felt like in her body, so she knew what to search for. Which gave her an idea. “Give me your hand’ she requested holding her own out. When Galinda complied looking confused Elphaba pushed their palms together and summoned a tiny bit of her magic , what she would use to lift the coin and directed it into Glinda’s palm.
“You feel that?” She asked feeling the slight tingling sensation moving between them, “that’s what I feel when I actively try to use my magic” she told her then stopped trying, though her hand was still pressed to Galinda’s and she felt a different kind of tingle for the briefest of moments she didn’t think had anything to do with magic, at least not the kind she was talking about.
“That’s what I feel when I do magic on purpose, but have it just happens to me, I think of that most like a sneeze that comes out of no where, it takes over your whole body and then escapes without you being able to do much about it” she explained.
“You’ll get there, we just have to figure out how you connect to the things around you or to your magic, we just need to find it.”

“Thank you” Elphaba smiled and looked down a little bashful. She didn’t do it to show off, it was more just an example.
“This is what we have to figure out” Elphaba patted her hand. She knew Galinda was going to be disappointed when it didn’t work right away. “This is why I had to read the chapters you did, and summarize them. So you know the concepts Galinda, you have to apply them now, which might take time and effort and practice” she told her warmly knowing that was going to be a lot of her it was a lot for Elphaba someday. “Look at the coin on the table” she suggested. “And imagine yourself picking it up” she said. “You can almost feel that right?” She checked “now, use the same concepts and imagine it lifting on its own…. Can you feel that at all?” She asked her.

“That’s okay” Elphaba was quick to tell her “I didn’t notice it at first either and that’s what the lessons are for, don’t worry if you already knew and could feel them you wouldn’t need magic lessons” she promised her.
“Now my magic seems to be different than others in the way it shoots up when I’m upset or emotional so Madame Morrible has been trying to get me to pay attention to the feelings I have when that happens. But I also had to learn how to connect to things.” She explained and reached into her pocket and pulled out a coin and sat it between them. “Look at it, study it. How do you get it to move?” She asked rhetorically “do you ask it? Do you force it? Do you feel it’s energy and work with it? That’s what we figure out” she explained. “I was forcing it, when I would have outbursts it’s like the magic slammed out of me and into things … or people around me” she said looking down a bit ashamed of Galinda being that person. “But now I can reach out with my magic and touch an object and get it to do what I want” she demonstrated by lifting the coin a few inches off the desk and having it float back to her hand. “We have to get you to talk to this coin, for lack of better words, to get it to move” she handed the coin to Galinda so she could hold it in her hands for a few moments

“This was perfect, it really shows you understood the material covered in the chapters.” She nodded and finally looked up at her with a grin. “Top marks Miss Galinda” she announced -quietly- in a professor voice. “Now we need to put the concepts to work and see how it is you connect to your magic” she informed her. “we might not be able to do all our lessons here since they might get … kinda loud, but I figured this was a good place to start in case we needed to refer back to the reading, but you seem to have that down” she beamed proudly.
“So what I think we should do is try and figure out how you connect to objects around you and the energy needed to move or change an object. So I guess I should ask how do you think you connect to objects or energy surrounding you? For me sometimes I get like a prickly feeling or I can hear a hum or sense energy flowing. Or I just randomly explode things” she joked “how do you think you feel it?” She asked

Elphaba led Galinda to the cafeteria where she made sure they each got tea and some sort of fruit, they’d eat actual breakfast once were done in the library. Finally she led the blonde towards the library and they picked a table, luckily it wasn’t that busy this early in the morning, which was good because Elphaba felt like they might not be that quiet when doing this. She didn’t know why she said they had to come here to do it. Finally they sat down and she reached out a hand “let me see it!” She demanded almost excitedly. Galinda had been working on this essay non stop, she had to have had about 3 or 4 drafts and she wouldn’t let Elphaba look at it so she was getting more and more anxious to see it by the moment.
She rolled her eyes adoringly when the blonde handed her pink scented pages. “Galinda” she chief laughing as she smelled the pages, her eyes closing just for a moment, as she appreciated her friends perfume. “Okay here we go” she teased as she started the essay. It was very clear early on that Galinda was taking this seriously. She’d understood and broke down very complex concepts and Elphaba was impressed “Galinda, this is amazing” she looked up at her friend proudly. “You did such a great job! I’m very impressed” she told her honesty

Elphaba actually laughed at how excited Galinda was. It was very adorable, she waited for her to come back to the door from her vanity before reaching out to put a hand on her shoulder “before we go, I just want you to know I would never regret helping you do anything, and even if it works or doesn’t work I won’t consider it time wasted if I get to spend that time with you. Okay?” She checked in. She knew Galinda was used to almost transactional friendship from people, but she wanted it to be clear she did t care if Galinda ever figured out magic or not, she’d still love her just as much.
“Let’s stop by and at least get tea and a banana ir something small. It’s hard to focus on an empty stomach and I need the caffeine” she teased before she opened the door and held it for the blonde “after you m’lady”
