Here is what I've noticed, which sets Elriel (s) apart from Eluciens and Gwynriels, and where, I think, the crux of the matter lies in how we treat the characters and their eventual stories.
Eluciens and Gwynriels both believe that one person in their ship is nearly flawless. Almost perfect. Lucien (for whatever crazy reason) is viewed as an epitome of a positive male character. And of course Gwyn is pure perfection, who's never done anything wrong ever. Perfect sister, perfect friend, perfect priestess, perfect warrior, perfect scholar.
But Elriels don't think that Elain and Azriel are perfect. Quite the opposite, actually. Both have their own issues and lots of things to confront and work through, individually and together.
The thing is that it is EASY to love a perfect person. There is no challenge in loving someone flawless.
The challenge is loving someone BECAUSE and WITH all of their flaws.
And that's Elriel.
Because a perfect person would inevitably try to charge the other to fit their own perfection. The gulf is too wide. If Gwyn is an ideal female character, then where does it leave Azriel in that equation? Because he is probably the least flawless character of all (maybe only next to Rhys). Does she then try to change him to make him 'better' or into a version that is acceptable to her? Or does she accommodate him and change herself to manage the relationship? Neither option works.
With Elain, we already know that she accepts him for what he is. His imperfections, his grumpiness, his darkness, his silence. And she never tried to change him. And Azriel certainly won't try to change Elain. She chose him, over the 'perfect' Lucien, and he chose her, over the 'perfect' Gwyn (though of course Gwynriel is not even real).

How Lucien withstood it, I didn't know. Not that he'd shown any interest in bridging that gap between them.
but azriel did and with a weapon that he only trusted elain with 🫠
He gently took her hand and pressed the hilt of the legendary blade into it. .. I saw the painting in my mind: the lovely fawn, blooming spring vibrant behind her. Standing before Death, shadows and terrors lurking over his shoulder. Light and dark, the space between their bodies a blend of the two. The only bridge of connection... that knife.

the elriel month & gwynriel week drama…
It's interesting that elriel month gets shadow banned bc multiple ppl reported multiple pieces of elriel fan art...
Then gwynriels suddenly start mass blocking elriel.
Elriel month comes out w a statement about the mass reporting and being targeted.
Multiple elriels have had gwynriels reporting random elriel comments & content
And then today gwynrielweek comes out w their own statement claiming the same things happening to them.....
It's funny... this has been happening to them "for months" yet you never addressed it till now? You went around blocking tons of accounts only in the last couple of days?
Listen we all know who got elriel month shadow banned. You guys go after artists all the time, you publicly make fun of elriel & bryce azriel art. You’ve doxxed elriel and Bryce azriel shippers….You reported a bunch of elriel fanart for no reason to get elriel month shadow banned and then you went on a massive blocking spree so it doesn't happen to you.
And you guys got called out publicly and now are trying to cover yourselves and play the victim. This is what you guys do though. You bully, personally attack and harass other shippers and then gaslight yourselves into thinking your the victim.
your facade is up. And no amount of backtracking is going to change it. I’m so thankful the gwynriels are being so called out and everyone is seeing how they really are.

It's not 'entitlement' to expect basic and consistent communication about a popular book series.
It's irrelevant that the author put out a book 1.5 years ago. That book was from a different series. She can be writing 10 different series, and that doesn't preclude readers from asking about a specific series.
No, we as readers should not be 'grateful' for books. We are paying customers. No one is grateful to Apple for putting out a new phone. No one is grateful to Taylor Swift for putting out a new album. We can appreciate it, we can be excited, but we don't have to be 'grateful'.
If a book is shit, we are allowed to call it that.
We are not obligated to fawn over a poorly written book (HOFAS), feel 'grateful' that it was released (when no one asked for it), and then be accused of entitlement when we simply ask for a legitimate update about ACOTAR.
STOP. ACCEPTING. LOW. VALUE. RELATIONSHIPS.
It goes for your friendships, romantic relationships, relationships as a consumer of goods, politics, or for your fandoms and hobbies.
Stop making yourself smaller. Folding yourself. Acquiescing. Accommodating. Excusing.
Demand better. Demand what you are owed.

gwynriels have
1.doxxed journalists and users
2. Stolen elriel art and very boldly posted it online to get the stolen material reblogged
3. Bullied , harassed every single elriel user , like an elriel can say Elain and Az in public ig in the comments but they get a swarm of comments like learn how to read ? Bro
4. Bullied people on the basis of their education , their sexuality, and their personal stories
5. supported the journalist who spread very damaging anti feminist statements for a ship , that’s right you very pro gwynriel accounts were real silent don’t think we didn’t notice , because psst pst you can’t keep you mouth shut when comes to harrassing
6. Have a history on tumblr to go on pro elriel accounts and to comment on their posts to start fights .
I have like 20 more I don’t want to list because we get the point ,
this shadowban was called for given how they acted and now they are saying elriels did it themselves,
I’m gonna say this once the world right now is very dark , people read books and join fandoms to feel better , to get some joy , you are not a good person for being a troll you are someone who needs help , because at this point there is no book what do you have to gain ?
nothing
because bullies online or in person gain nothing

for those of you all that dont get the point or think accusations are being thrown around:
All appreciation weeks have nsfw pieces- none have gotten shadowbanned. Elriel nsfw pieces on Instagram- most are censored therefore there is no issue as it does not violate community guidelines automatically. People have had to ACTIVELY report the art multiple times for it to cause shadowban and for the arts to get taken down. It wasn’t Elrielmonths’ fault at all. So dont bother laying the blame there
I personally have never interacted with any gwynriel content. Yet the week has blocked a bunch of elriels, including myself, on all platforms when we havent been blocked before- coincidence? Dont kid yourself. Antis reported elrielmonth then, afraid elriels would catch onto what they’ve done - the pussycats mass blocked elriels to protect their weeks. That is incriminating. Antis could have painted, “guilty” on their forheads and it would have been less obvious to what they’ve done to elriels then mass blocking us.
This was a coordinated attack on elrielmonth. An attack on elriels, basically confirming to us that we do not have safe places to celebrate elriel. They feared the consequences so have taken action to make sure they got away w the spiteful acts they’ve done. Fyi, they havent. What comes around, goes around and its as simple as that.

To get this straight,
some people - lets be real here, we all know who, mass reported a bunch of elriel fanarts, old and new with the aim of getting elriel month shadowbanned/or even banned. Then, the little scaredy cats used gwynrielweeksofficial (yes weeks, crazy right?) to then mass block a bunch of elriels (This is the first time an appreciation week, as im aware off, has actively participated in blocking accounts) in hopes that no one can affect their weeks. They wanted to ruin elrielmonth for elriels, shadowbannings affects commisioners who have paid crazy amounts of money for their fellow sisters to enjoy elriel content, artists who use these appreciation weeks as a way to become known and get customers - which at a time, where human artists are in competition with AI artists this affects them deeply, fanfic writers and content crestors etc and now the pussycats blocked elriels so no one can retaliate.
You reep what you sow as the saying goes, what comes around, goes around too is all im going to say. You dont get to be petty and spiteful without consequences in return to expect such…well its plain delusional.

it will never not be incredibly funny that people are this threatened and upset over the only ship that are canonically romantically interested in each other

Let's talk about accountability in this fandom.
This isn’t a "drag" post. This is a please think before you post kind of post. Some stuff has been going on in this fandom that really needs to be addressed — not to hate, but to reflect and do better.
1. A poll about college degrees was posted to "prove" which ship has the smartest fans. Yeah... that’s classist.
Tumblr media
Asking which ship (Gwynriel, Elriel, Elucien) has more readers with degrees, especially in STEM, to basically say "our side is smarter." That’s not cute.
You can be smart without a degree.
You can love books without going to college.
You can be brilliant, analytical, and insightful even if life didn’t give you the same chances.
Being from a poor background doesn’t give you a free pass to use your education as a flex against others. It just ends up reinforcing the same classist mindset that holds people back in the first place.
2. A wlw fanart was posted and it got "sisters" "friends" comments. That is homophobic, even if you didn’t mean it that way.
Tumblr media
This under a sapphic fanart even though the OP clearly intended it as romantic. When people (including the OP) spoke up, the response was “We ship Emorie, so we’re not homophobic.”
Here’s the thing:
Liking one queer ship doesn’t mean you can’t do something homophobic. "I am bisexual, I am not homophobic." Being bi doesn’t cancel out the harm caused by dismissing a queer romantic ship as "sisterly."
Nobody called you a homophobic person but your actions toward that fanart were absolutely homophobic.
Queer people have been seeing their relationships dismissed as "just close friends" or "sisters" for decades. So yes, that word carries weight. It’s not harmless.
If someone from the queer community says "Hey, that hurts" it’s not the time to say "But I ship this one gay couple." It’s the time to listen.
3. Stealing and editing Elriel fanart to turn it into Gwynriel? Also not okay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fanart theft is still theft. People put time, love, and effort into art. Editing their work without permission especially to erase the original ship is super disrespectful.
If you love your ship, commission art for it. Don’t just take someone else’s.
And here’s the frustrating part:
Every time this kind of behavior gets called out, the people doing it twist the narrative. They’ll say they’re being "bullied" or "attacked," and somehow turn themselves into the victim while taking zero accountability.
They’ve never been wrong, no matter how many times they’ve been called out.
Meanwhile, the people speaking up who are just trying to defend boundaries, respect art, or stand up for queer rep are the ones being labeled as "toxic." This is exactly how they keep getting away with it.
By refusing to reflect, by twisting the story, and by shutting down any chance for growth.
It’s not bullying to ask people to take responsibility. It’s not drama to want better from a fandom space. And it’s not wrong to call out harm especially when it keeps repeating.
Lastly, to everyone out there without a degree, still reading and loving stories, you matter. Your voice counts. You’re smart, creative, and valid.
To queer shippers, wlw fans, and the artists who bring those stories to life, thank you. Your work is powerful. Your ships are beautiful.
Let’s just… be better to each other. Fandom is supposed to be fun and safe and creative not a place for elitism, erasure, or stealing.
We all deserve a space where our love for stories and characters can thrive without having to prove our worth.
