"You've been here long enough to know Mr. Carson doesn't have the right to sack you, or any of the other girls without at least asking me. And Mr. Barrow doesn't have the right to sack anyone."
Mr. Barrow said that Mr. Carson can't stand me...
"When exctly did Mr. Barrow start speaking for Mr. Carson?"

"How stupid do you think I am exactly, Peter?"
Elsie had had enough. She'd spent an hour and a half upstairs with Amelia trying to calm the girl down until she'd fallen asleep. "Peter my parlor. Now." She wasn't about to get Charles involved in this. She didn't have the patience for that today.
Peter flinched as soon as he heard her voice. He’d been wondering just how long it would take before he’d be thrown to the wolves for absolutely nothing.
“Yes, Mrs Hughes…”

"It’s nothing you did because you didn’t get the chance to Peter. You know you’re supposed to leave the maids alone."

"Mrs. Hughes, forgive me if I missed your saying so this morning, but is the grocer supposed to come today? He's waiting at the back entrance-- I told him I needed to speak with you before lettin' him in." --Mariead
"Let him in. Daisy can put the order away, I'll check it when I get a minute."

"I know Mr. Carson well enough to know he gave you the usual warning off the maids. So are you going to explain what happened between you and Amelia?"

"Mrs. Hughes, is there anything you need me to do before I turn in for the night?" -- Anna (idontpretendtobealady)
Elsie bit her tongue and looked toward the door. “No.” Not unless Anna could somehow get the forming headache to go away. Why was it 90% of the time when trouble was started up it was either Thomas or one of the footmen? Always. “Head on up to bed, Anna.”

"I'll have a talk with Peter."
Charles Carson be damned if the boy was bothering one of the maids, scullery maid or house maid, she'd deal with him. "You musen't let him get to you. He's bored is all." And a more than a bit nasty tempered but she wasn't about to say that.
"He’s a hallboy he’s not that far above you," As far as Charles was concerned Elsie knew she’d have to have a talk with him. And IF he tried to tell her she had to sack the girl it wouldn’t be the first time she hadn’t listened to him. It was as simple as...

Then who was it exactly? It's not as if Miss O'Brien is here anymore.

And IF he tried to tell her she had to sack the girl it wouldn't be the first time she hadn't listened to him. It was as simple as that. God knows there were times that man had no sense. "He just kissed you. Nothing else?"

There had been a time something like that earned a girl a sacking. But that time was long past, contrary to what a certain butler thought most of the time. "Peter has a tendency to get too big for his boots." She'd warned Charles about the boy. He wasn't much better than James, at least in her opinion.

"You know you’re not supposed to lie to the housekeeper, Amelia. Now what’s wrong?" she sat on the bed next to the girl and handed her a handkerchief. No one in the family had come out and said who the girl was but Elsie was reasonably certain she was Lady Edith’s daughter. No one outside the family, and a few of the servants knew the girl even existed.

The scullery maids might have technically been under Beryl but, it didn't change the fact Elsie checked up on all the girls, especially the younger ones when they first started. She knew what it was to be homesick. Her first job had been far from home, even if she hadn't gotten along with her father terribly well it had still been home.
When she heard the youngest of Downton's scullery maids crying in her room the Scotswoman knocked on the door and peaked in. "What's your fault?"
