Call me delusional or whatever idc but hear me out, I genuinely do think that we’ll get something juicy in terms of Lottieshauna next season, and I have reasons. Let me go through a long rant of the build up for their characters, and what I think that means, and where that will lead them for s4.
S3, to my extreme suprise was so lottieshauna centered I was actually taken back. We leave s2 with the beating, and then shauna showing some form of regret after it’s said and done, bringing lottie a blanket, and when van said that she couldn’t imagine being in the wilderness without lottie, shauna agreed. So we leave off s2 with pretty good material, but I did not anticipate the full course meal that we would receive in s3.
S3 for them opens up with lottie talking to Travis about grief, In which naturally, the conversation steered in the direction of shauna. Though it wasn’t in depth or long, we get a line from lottie where she says, “I tried to talk to her, but she kinda shut me out” and lottie telling us that shauna also said sometime that “needing a shrink doesn’t make you a shrink” (not sure if that’s worded correctly but it was along those lines) so there we are confirmed with tension; longing on Lottie’s part, and regret and also what seems to be bitterness and a cold shoulder from Shauna. One can assume it’s because shauna can’t handle or regulate her emotions properly, so with her it’s either lash out or be completely avoidant. And in this case, it seems to have been both towards lottie at some point in time.
Now moving past that bit of information from the conversation she had with Travis, let’s go to the adult timeline for ep 2 and 3; lottie shows up to Shauna’s house unannounced, out of everyone, and the fact that we now know that she could’ve literally just have gone back to her posh penthouses in NY says a lot TO ME. now again, let’s move forward and go to Lottie’s death. Though lottieshauna is growing rapidly in numbers, the critique i see the most about the ship is that it’s one sided. Now I see why it may look like that, and shit at one point I did think so to, but all my doubts were completely stripped away when Lottie’s death came around. Shauna cared. Shauna was affected. And she seemed to be the only one who truly gave a shit that lottie was killed.
The bedroom scene of Shauna having these very specific flashbacks of her in Lottie’s room screamed intimate to me. So shauna, the one who supposedly despises lottie, has these flashbacks of lottie smiling at her, and also smiling at others, she sees a flashback of lottie at her compound, she sees lottie on the night of doomcoming with her antlers looming, and lastly, we see lottie covered in blood, from what we now know is when Shauna returned to the camp/village with Hannah and saw lottie, a sight that stuck in Shaunas mind for 25+ years. And after those visions, we see one of the most caring and thoughtful things I’ve ever seen Shauna do. She eases Lottie’s fathers pain, and vicariously talks to Lottie’s father as if she’s lottie herself. Do you know the kind of understanding, care and love, yes LOVE, that takes for someone to do ? And to accurately Portray yourself as someone like lottie to her actual father ? Talking about Lottie’s mental illness, saying to Lottie’s dad that it wasn’t easy for her, and questioning Lottie’s father, ‘are you really trying?’ ‘Did you really try and understand your daughter?’ Beautiful and fascinating scene.
Now, let’s go back into the teen timeline, the fucking trial episode. Two major scenes I want to point out. The voting scene, and the scene where lottie watches Melissa and shauna. The voting scene was so incredibly charged with so many different undertones. Lottie seeing god/the wilderness in shauna, like truly seeing it in her, in my opinion, for the first real time. And now the scene with lottie looking at Melissa and Shauna’s exchange, lottie in my eyes, seems to be longing for that connection that Melissa has been able to achieve; something that lottie has craved for so long, i sense envy, that Melissa, out of nowhere, gets to be somewhat emotionally, and physically close with shauna. Another fascinating scene to me.
Now to one of my favorite scenes in all of s3. The axe scene. Lottie axes Edwin and immediately casts her eyes to shauna for approval; shauna smiles wide and gives lottie that approval, while the others stare in horror. I saw alicentgf say that lottie could’ve partly done it to seek that very approval from shauna specifically, after seeing the bloody hand scene with Mel and Shauna after cutting ben’s Achilles - lottie thinking that blood will get her close to shauna, abs in a way, that’s completely true. Definitely something to consider and think about.
Now skip a bit to the scene where shauna stays, and sides with lottie against the group leaving. I saw a post that I agreed with completely. Many think that shauna just stayed for herself and lottie made her realize that in the moment, but I believe that she also stayed for lottie as well. Whether shauna likes to admit it or not, she has a weird tether to lottie, though I think 100% that she hates the fact that she does, she can’t change what she feels deep inside. Watch the scene and look at Shauna’s face when lottie is speaking to Natalie about going home. Says a lot.
Now to the hunt. They were practically feeding off of each other. Lottie says they should hunt, shauna then agrees and calls for a hunt. Natalie tries to protest but Shauna simply says her name, and she returns, lottie smiles in satisfaction; I believe she loves Shauna’s power, her command, her ability to give fear. Lottie and her being the only ones who want the hunt - like I said, feeding off each other and using each other for their violent and horrible desires. Lottie’s desire being that she wants to please her god, and Shauna’s is just because she’s having fun. As confirmed by shauna in the adult timeline herself. But it’s the same result, violence and death.
So now, we leave off with Shauna being deceived and Natalie has called for help, the group is against shauna, and the one who we don’t see happy or shown in support of what juts happened, is lottie. So the show has left shauna and lottie completely at odds with the rest of the group, and here’s what and where I think that will lead them to in s4:
This isolation will ultimately bring lottie and shauna closer together than they’ve ever been, I believe they will go full church and state and work together to gain some sort of control back over the group. Lottie has absolutely no problem in being a follower of shauna, and being under her command; so whatever shauna says, lottie will do. But same with shauna, lottie commanded and a hunt and she did a fucking hunt because she asked. So they work together as one beautiful, and fucked up unit. Now what that means for lottie and Shauna and what will happen between them on the intimate side of things, I don’t want to sound ridiculous , far-fetched or god forbid.. fanon, but I genuinely think “weird” things could happen between the two; does that mean weird physical intimacy? Maybe. Does that mean possible ritualistic killings together? Could be, Because several of those people that are alive need to die to make the survivor count go to 8, so I definitely don’t see that as being far fetched.
To end this, I just think personally that the writers are building up to something for them, and the connection and chemistry between them will not be wasted as I’ve previously thought. Who knows, we’ll just have to wait and see.

it's actually incredibly important to me that s3 has two scenes where shauna insists on passing the knife to somebody else. i think that shauna serves as a scapegoat for a lot of the characters this season in both timelines, and so much of that is tied to her role as the butcher. it's a role where she's constantly doing the dirty work that nobody else can stomach, misty acknowledges that almost verbatim during ben's trial. and i think that shauna's response to this role is also difficult to stomach, in that she doesn't at any point allow herself any reprieve from the gruesome reality of what she's doing. when natalie kills ben, of course it hurts her to do it, and of course the others are mad, but she can rely on it being "the right thing to do." when lottie kills edwin, of course it's a product of her rapidly deteriorating mental state, of course the others are mad, but she can rely on it being "what it wanted." shauna allows herself none of these things. her rage, her grief, and her resentment are the only things she has. the reality of what it means to cut up the body of a friend is all she has. her resilience, the chip on her shoulder, and her stony exterior are how she survives. she is not a character unburdened by guilt, she's a character who believes guilt is a selfish thing to feel. (you know there was no 'it' right? it was just us.) we did horrible things in horrible ways, what use is there in pretending otherwise? what use is there in feeling guilty once it's done? and so it matters a great deal that when melissa tells shauna why she likes her, that list of things includes parts of who shauna has become since losing jackie, and her baby, and forcing herself to live and exist under the conditions of her (admittedly warped) sense of absolute reality. of course she hands melissa the knife. it's how THIS version of shauna can open up. shauna's love language has always involved mirroring and consumption and co-dependence and a blending of identities. it's how she loved jackie. it's how she goes on to love callie. be me for a second. see what it feels like. live with yourself after you do it. show me that i can do the same. and after natalie kills ben, and shauna takes her place as leader, she does it again. she passes natalie the knife, only this time as a form of punishment. because no matter how mean or violent shauna becomes, how comfortable with blood and guts she appears, that is ultimately how she views this role. it's a punishment. shauna's very existence, the life she's built 25 years later, is a form of punishment. but it's also incredibly significant to me that shauna's idea of punishment involves...forcing somebody to walk a mile in her shoes. be her for a second. see what it feels like. she can't talk about it, or cry about it, or pray about it, but she can do this.
