Week 10 hmsex
After my meeting with Shaun, we decided to change my adjective to amazing. In order to achieve amazing, I need to think of something amazing to adapt to my original idea. So I will continue my original idea to spread the message of positivity and happiness through my work.
I created the earth with a plugin, and i made it turning so it will seem like it’s time reversing.
I created the thunder light effect with a solid layer, this could make the book feel more magical.
I added a spot light to the opening book scene to add to the vintage atmosphere.

Week 8 hmsex
This week I have been working on creating the video cut for my assignment. Through my previous research I know that I can create the feeling of exhilarating through the countdown. I have added the count down elements in my video. In my video, I have also used the olympics elements, which is clips from the competitions and I have cut and mixed it together which will later be overlapped on the motion graphics that I will create.

Week 7 hmsex
This week I focus on find what sort of video I want to overlap in my project. Finding what sort of video can make my audiences feel exhilarated but at the same time, brings out the diversity feeling that I want my audiences to feel.
Watching this olympics video makes me feel very excited but touched at the same time, it makes me feel proud and happy.

Week 5HMsEX

'studies are claimed to indicate that positive emotions are predominantly processed by the left hemisphere of the brain', in this research they have tests many different scents, however it is hard to identify a pleasant scent where everyone thinks it’s pleasant, as scent is very subjective. However the pleasant test that they did, vanillin was considered as pleasant by many. Which is what I want to use too, as I will have food visuals and I also want to match it scent. In my research last week, I have found that scents that match with visuals are more appealing, therefore I have decided to use vanillin base scents.

I went to the HK 5G lab yesterday, it was claimed to be fun and exciting. However the visuals doesn’t match with my physical experience, as I was asked to ride the bicycle and I will supposedly be able to feel it through vr. However when there were bumps in the VR road, I don’t physically feel it. I kept going really fast on the bicycle but the VR doesn’t do the same. I think it was a bad experience. This also made me reflect because I wanted to have a flower scent that represents different country matching with food representing different country visuals, however this won’t be matching with audience’s expectations. In my previous research I know that audiences won’t feel good when their expectations are not met.

Week 4 HMsEX
I have started to look at how I can make animations this week, I have tried it before but it wasn’t very good. So I have been looking at tutorials on photoshop and after effects to learn more skills and to have a better understanding of how everything works.
youtube
This is a game called Just Dance where users can follow the movements on the screen. The controller that they hold will also feel the vibrate that follows the beat of the music. It makes the users feel exhilarated with extra screen effects when the users reach to a certain level. The scoring on the left side also makes the users feel exhilarated by seeing it slowly increasing. The animation in the back also matches with the beat of the music to keep the users entertained.
----------------------------------------------------------- Plus:
Many varieties of transitions are used
The side marking system
Minus:
The colour combination used in the video doesn’t look good as it is always using complementary colours.
It’s hard to know where to focus as there are too many things happening.
Interesting:
The marking scheme and the ‘perfect’ ‘yeah’ are very encouraging and effective in making the players feel exhilarated. I have learnt that simple words can also makes the users feel very different.
youtube
This is a cover for love on top by pitch perfect. Watching this video makes me feel very happy and from the reading I read last week I think it is not only because of their amazing voices but also seeing a lot of smiling faces, which can trick our mind to think that we feel happy too. There’s not much special effects used in this video just good quality sound and simple transitions can already make me feel exhilarated.
----------------------------------------------------------- Plus:
The sound sounds very good with harmony. I think the matching of sound to make my audio sound full and interesting is something I learnt from this video.
Minus:
The videos are not in similar colours as in the lighting and the colour filter.
Interesting:
Simple transitions can already make the video looks interesting, I think I understand what less is more means.
~~~~~~~~~~ Errajaa, Karim et al. “Scent Marketing: Linking the Scent Congruence with Brand Image.” International journal of contemporary hospitality management 33.2 (2021): 402–427. Web.
In this reading, it explored how the scent of a place can affect the customers reaction. If customers find the place smells the same as what they think it should be or in harmony to brand image are more favourable. It also improves customers satisfaction and intention to revisit. This reading focus more on the marketing/ business side but I still think it is useful for my project, because I have learnt that it is better to have scents that matches with my video in my case. Originally I was thinking to have perhaps flower scents with food video but that might not be a good experience for my audiences.
Week 3 HMsEX
Cheok, Adrian David., and Kasun. Karunanayaka. Virtual Taste and Smell Technologies for Multisensory Internet and Virtual Reality. 1st ed. 2018. Cham: Springer International Publishing, 2018. Web.
During my conversation with Shaun, I mentioned about I want to do scent sensory but I am overseas so I am unable to do this. I tried to find ways to make this happen and after reading this book, Virtual taste and smell technologies for multisensory internet and virtual reality, I realised that there is a technology called digital smell interface and many other similar interfaces which are chemical base systems and non chemical base system but they are all very highly priced. This interface also has a big weakness which is it is not user friendly and hygiene problems as the non chemical base will need to connect our tongue to the device and safety problems also rise. So it is challenging to go with digital smell sensory and I will have to think of another way.
Ypulse essentials: 'spy kids 4D' in aromascope, McGraw-hill's digital-only textbook, google's social network (2011). . Chatham: Newstex. Retrieved from http://ezproxy.lib.rmit.edu.au/login?url=https://www-proquest-com.ezproxy.lib.rmit.edu.au/blogs-podcasts-websites/ypulse-essentials-spy-kids-4d-aromascope-mcgraw/docview/874025961/se-2?accountid=13552
I have experienced this before when I was young, but can’t remember very clearly as I was only 9 when I experienced the aromascope. Even though this is no longer a new technology but I think I can make good use of this. Spy kids 4D is one of the early and innovative example of 4 sensories in one. Not only one scent like the first example I have mentioned, but it has 8. It uses a scratch and sniff when the corresponding number appear on the screen, I think this is a good idea and I want to use this technology with my own project. I really want to create a piece that works with projection and smell sensation. During the covid everyone is unable to travel around the world, hate and racism situations are rising, therefore I want to create a piece that spreads love and showcase many different cultures. For the sensation I want to create a sensation card with different flower scents that represents different countries.
Assignment 1 HMsEx (exhilarating)
I really want to create a piece that works with projection and smell sensation. During the covid everyone is unable to travel around the world, hate and racism situations are rising, therefore I want to create a piece that spreads love and showcase many different cultures. For the sensation I want to create a sensation card with different flower scents that represents different countries.
This animation has a good use of colours and the style of the cartoon makes it very positive, the background music is also lively to bring the emotion up. The sound effects and orchestral music that matches with the actions are also very effective in building the emotion. The flying part (2:03) is the exhilarating part of the animation, pushing the audiences emotion to the top.
--------------------------------------------------
Plus:
The use of colours
The detail of the graphics
The plot keeps the audiences engaged and exhilarated
Minus:
Since there is no narrative nor subtitle, the audiences depends heavily on the graphics to understand what is happening in the scene. So the audiences might not get exactly or interpret it the way that the designer intended.
Interesting:
Even though there is no script nor lines in this animation, the whole animation keeps the audiences engaged and exhilarating through just sound effects and graphics. The plot constantly have new turn around and unexpected plots.
This is the opening of the lady gaga cocnert in 2021. The lady gaga concert has a great sound and visual design. By adding slow motion effects and transitions with a upbeat background music. A fast number transition and the beat gets faster and faster to positively elevate the emotions of the audiences. The last part (2:32) where the numbers start to count down is the top of the excitement part. Through the screams of the audiences, we can tell this piece is very effective in pushing the emotions of the audiences to the top. In the reading, ‘how we affect each other’ by Dr Steven Stosny, he said the emotions are passed from person to person, even in a crowd of strangers, emotion contagion allows us to feel what the rest of the group feels.
--------------------------------------------------
Plus:
The fast paste transitions to push the exhilarating atmosphere
The background music
Minus:
The start is too long, the audience might not be as engaged
Interesting:
Retro style video
The contrast of slow motion video and fast transitions
This is a VR roller coaster in Hong Kong and it is a combination of sound, sensation and visual. I think this is a really innovative idea using the wind sensation with the visuals can make the audiences have a very different experience. Both the motion and the visuals and the hype music allows the audiences to feel positive and excited. The motion of dropping down is the exhilarating part (1:15) combining with the graphics, just like in class Darrin mentioned that he had a roller coaster ride experience without visuals and it wasn’t a good experience. This VR graphics also drops at the same time to allow the audiences have the feeling of drop visually and physically. Roller coaster is positive stress that people look for when seeking for new excitement, and the whole journey is exhilarating.
--------------------------------------------------
Plus:
The combination of visual and physical
Minus:
There’s too many things happening in the scene, it is hard for the audience to know where to focus
Interesting:
The experience of the sensation gravitation force, graphic and audio
This upbeat music makes the audiences feel very positive and happy. There are many transitions in the music video to keep the audiences engaged and interested. The dance also feels very energetic to elevate the audience’s emotions. Smiling can trick our brain and when it is seen over and over again we will then feel happy.
--------------------------------------------------
Plus:
The transition and video matches well with the music and the happy atmosphere
the filter / colour of the video looks cohesive
Minus:
The whole video doesn’t have much surprises / turnover. It is quite flat.
Interesting:
Successfully portrays the happy atmosphere throughout the whole video.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This piece is a artwork by takashi murakami, it has a positive feeling through it’s use of colours. A repetitive pattern with smiles is very iconic and it spreads the feeling of happiness. The different sizes and overlaps also makes it looks like it’s popping out to enhance the happiness feeling.
--------------------------------------------------
Plus:
The colour choices, even though there are many colours but it looks harmonious and nice.
Minus:
All of takashi murakami’s collection looks repetitive / similar.
Interesting:
Even though there are many colours used but it doesn’t feel inharmonious.

youtube
This is a disney 4D film which I have personally experienced before. This theater made a really good use between graphics and 3D effects, the graphics were amazingly done and starting at 1:19, the third sensory experience starts. It begins to have scents of the food and starting at 4:18, the forth sensory experience comes in with water splashes and makes the audiences feel exhilarating. This works through matching the sensory (moving chair, scent, water splashes) with the graphics at the exact same time which makes it feel real and higher energy positively. The background sound also has a huge effect on this piece, the orchestra creates a happy and hyped energy. The graphic follows the up and downs of the background music, and gradually becomes more and more intense in terms of the speed of the movements which also increases the level of excitement (emotion) of the audiences. I think it works because the atmosphere of this piece is a magical world, and the orchestra background music works perfectly with this theme to bring out the atmosphere. The scents, water and moving chairs further enhances the sensories too.
--------------------------------------------------
Plus:
The graphics and plot.
the background music and effect is nicely planned
the use of multisensory
Minus:
too many things happening at once
Interesting:
the audiences are always engaged as there are many new surprises coming up to make the audiences feel exhilarated

youtube
This is a piece by teamLab japan which combines animation projection with tea house. The theme of this piece is boardless flower projection and beautifully presents their graphics on the tea cups. Everytime audiences drinks and places their cup down, new graphics will be shown and this whole experience combines taste sensation, scent sensation, graphic and audio. The visuals start with a black screen then it the music slowly starts and the graphics start to come in then the tea is served. This whole experience slowly builds the emotions of the audiences from neutral to positive. I think this works because the whole environment has a relaxing atmosphere and they created this through using a slow rhythm background music and slow motions of graphics. The serve of the tea is also very slow, so this whole package successfully creates a positive relaxing emotion.
--------------------------------------------------
Plus:
The graphics are nicely presented through projection
Taste , smell sensation are incorporated
Minus:
If the audience place the cup in a different position, there might not be graphics on the cup
Interesting:
The projection of the graphics
Tea + flower graphics combination

youtube
This is a kinect motion sensor and animation project piece, it includes smell and taste sensation too. It is in a cartoon animation style and the colour they’ve used are quite bright and colourful. The graphics matches with the food that they serve and right after the animation, the food is served. The timing is controlled perfectly. The animations continuously have something new coming up to keep the audiences engaged and it is quite humorous. The background lively music also helps and the special sound effects are very effective too. The emotions of the audiences keeps going very positive, happy and engaged.
--------------------------------------------------
Plus:
The graphics are very entertaining and audiences are able to engage with it.
Minus:
The timing has to be controlled perfectly if not the audiences will not be fully experiencing the whole experience
Interesting:
The graphics / plots are very humorous
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
youtube
This is a projection piece with music, taste and scent sensation. This piece plays well with the music rhythm and graphic. I really like how they played with the beat and they made a good use of the ‘lighting’ which is still the same projection. They started from slow background music then slowly increases the speed to build up the audience’s emotion from neutral to positive. This piece works well because all the timing is well thought through and it makes the audiences feel excited for the food they are about to eat and also makes the audiences feel exhilirated.
--------------------------------------------------
Plus:
The graphics matches with the beats and background music
Minus:
Not as interesting/ intriguing compared to the others as there is no plot
Interesting:
The fork and knife part is very interesting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
youtube
This is a VR restaurant with moving chairs, taste and scent sensation. I think this is a very innovative piece as it combines so many sensories. The theme is wildlife animals and it feels like jurassic park. The graphics are very nicely done and there are many sudden pop up to enhance the excitement. The food is served through a train which matches with the whole theme and it is very creative. The 3D environment is very detailed. The music also helps to enhance the excitement and futuristic atmosphere. I think this piece is very interesting as it is very fast paste with many new things coming out during the whole experience.
--------------------------------------------------
Plus:
The 3D environment is detailed.
It is very innovative.
Minus:
Too many things happening at once
Interesting:
Incorporate VR, scent, taste, visual and audio all at once.
The way of serving food
