Of course, that didn’t mean Alice didn’t appreciate it any less. But she did have her doubts and insecurities, ones that even Emmeline Vance couldn’t void. “Maybe it’s a bit much,” she mused, setting the toy aside in favor of a stuffed animal so soft it may as well have been made of velvet. “This is probably more difficult to choke on, don’t you think?”

“That doesn’t make it any less true. Besides, I would probably still tell you if I thought you weren’t ready for a baby.” 

“Are you adopting a baby or an older kid? Do you know yet? That might make a difference as far as which toy is the best.”

“Only socks? I think a pop of color in your ties might be kind of fun. Don’t get me wrong, the whole robes might be a bit much depending on the situation, but you can get a bit bolder than just socks.”

“No, I don’t believe I have either.” Leon turned to watch a woman with alarmingly tall neon green hair walk by. “Do you think it’s deliberate or spell damage?”

“Someone did it deliberately. You couldn’t get that shade by accident. The next question is probably was she trying for that color.” Emmeline craned a bit as the woman disappeared into the crowd, trying to determine if something about her outfit gave her away.

“I take it you’re not the type to wear a bit of orange now and then? I’m more of burnt orange than a sherbet person myself.”

“I thought it might be fun,” Alice shrugged. “Exciting. Attention grabbing. I don’t know.”

Now doubting herself, Alice frowned at the fuchsia shape sorter she had been twisting about in her hands. “Do you think it’ll hurt our chances?”

“I think they should give you additional points for creativity. I would, anyway.” Emmeline smiled, running a reassuring hand down Alice’s arm. “Besides, I doubt anything could hurt your chances. You and Frank practically radiate responsible and ready to love a baby. ”

Emmeline cocked her head to the side, examining the bird thoughtfully and with amusement. “Do you think... it’s a charmed bird or a real bird he charmed purple?”
