In defense of Gakushuu's debate skills

In short: even though it would be pretty funny if he was bad at debating, Gakushuu in fact excels in that, too. I have just realized what the source of confusion is here. This messed up English translation:

Let's compare that to the original Japanese:

善 in fact refers to ethics, and that is also according to the character book Gakushuu's weakest subject.

弁 in the opposite corner, on the other hand, refers to debate (弁論). So the translation has somehow switched the places of those two.

In fact, it seems they've in general just put the words in random order in the translation, probably thinking it doesn't matter. Like, what is leadership in English is language in Japanese, skill is English, body is math...

Actually, this is what the original Japanese says:

Upper row: Japanese, English, math, science, phys. ed., technical skills, statistics Lower row: ethics, money, friends, appearance, debate

It's overall a pretty sloppy translation, in my mind. Like for example translating 体 as body, when it's got to refer to 体育, P.E. Just like 英 refers to 英語, English, and 数 to 数学, math.

...there sure were lots of stupid mistakes in the manga translation. I wonder if they fixed this one too for the later editions, like they fixed calling Nagisa's mom "Hiromi Nagisa" and the Reaper Yanagisawa (on their freaking character info pages!)

I like how Ice Queendom is doing a good job of humanizing Whitley a lot more early on. He may act like a brat due to his upbringing, but despite that he does look up to his sisters. He’s just not very good at showing it, so he falls back on learned behaviors.

He even looks proud of Weiss when she defeats the Arma Gigas! It’s little details like this that go a long way.

If you are in a yellow state, you currently have constitutional abortion protections but they are in jeopardy. Get active in local political groups NOW to fight back against constitutional amendments to ban abortion. Your focus should be purely on political action.

With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, I need to let people know how dangerous the healthcare privacy climate is now. As someone that works with PHI (protected health information) I want to stress that HIPAA (the law that prevents your health data from being shared) does not apply to healthcare apps. These are incredibly dangerous to use, not only because law enforcement can procure a subpoena to access this information, but because these apps can sell your health data to any third party—potentially anti-abortion activists. Anyone with a uterus should delete not only period trackers, but mental health apps, because if you have a miscarriage or seek an abortion in a state that outlaws it, your mental health history can be used against you.

I would also discourage people from using online therapy apps like BetterHelp and Talkspace. Though BetterHelp says they are HIPAA compliant, that is a lie. They have shared data with Facebook. Their most recent privacy policy update says “We may share your information in connection with an asset sale, merger, bankruptcy, or other business transaction.” Any data breach could put your information at risk. Any health app could suddenly decide to change their privacy policies without notice.

Most responsible clinicians put your health data under (many times literally) lock and key. PHI software like Epic or Cerner have numerous failsafes to prevent data leaks. This is not the case for apps. BetterHelp and healthcare apps in general do not care about this. They only care about money. Do not trust any app or healthcare provider that operates strictly online. And for your own sake, use a VPN if you’re searching for abortion providers or advice.

ive already seen stuff about this so i want to make it clear. i hope people realize that john mulaney relapsing, having to go to rehab, divorcing his wife and then immediately after dating someone else and having a kid with her is one thing, it's a series of things that happened to him and that are none of our business, they don't impact anybody else's lives except john's and the people directly involved, that's why people were defending him back then and talking about not putting him on a pedestal because he's not perfect etc

john mulaney platforming a transhomophobe without a warning, and cheering him on and clapping and hugging him etc is a completely different thing. dude that HURTS people, that's a direct attack towards his vastly queer online audience. it involves all of us

so here's my point. "stop putting celebrities on a pedestal" worked for the first part, john was considered this untouchable being, and then he did something that was kinda ehhhhhhh and we know what happened

but THIS IS DIFFERENT. the pedestal is on the ground. we are ground fucking floor baby! the standard is literally "don't be a bigot" AND HE DID THAT. there is no pedestal girl it's basic common sense

one thing is elevating someone to godhood, giving them the untouchable perfect person status, and being disappointed when they do one thing that makes them less perfect. another is expecting the bare fucking minimum (not being a bigot) and being met with bigotry.
