The company, Plant Wise, makes reusable trash bags. They are machine washable, water resistant (so no leaks!!), anti-bacterial and they offer a varied size range. As a country, 310.43 million people use plastic trash bags and liners. Think about how much plastic we can save if we all switched to these bags! They are only $14, so they will pay for themselves very quickly.

This post really caught my eye. I was thinking to myself, what in the world are in those egg cartons? After reading the post though, there are so many things you can do with egg cartons that I have never thought about before. They list: nail polish caddy, sewing kit, ornament storage, computer rest, jewelry coffer, fridge organizer, bird feeder, fire starters, herb garden, tablet stand, drawer organizer and hardware carrier. The first one I am going to to try is planting herbs in the egg cartons!

Being a woman, I spend a lot of time in the bathroom and use a lot of different beauty products every single day. I will not use all of these low waste bathroom products, because some of them honestly gross me out, but that is okay! I will still use some if them, like reusable makeup pads, biodegradable cotton swabs, refillable options and package free soap! If you are a woman who wears makeup, I strongly urge you to use reusable makeup pads. This is a simple thing we can do to help reduce waste!

There are so many easy ways we can help the Earth. Most adults know these simple things, but unless kids are taught about it, they will not know. I love this picture because it is bright and colorful, which is appealing to children. The ways you can help the Earth are numbers, short and sweet and have a picture to help them stand out. I could use this poster to teach my children in the hospital how they can help the Earth!

There is so much plastic in this world, and even when we recycle it, sometimes it still gets into the ocean and hurts the environment. By upcycling plastic bottles, we can make awesome crafts for kids to do. It is really important for children to have something live in their environment, such as an animal or plant. This is no different for children in the hospital. I want to use plastic bottles as pots for the children in my future hospital to plant seeds!

Sustainability is extremely important, and we need to teach children this, so they will make more sustainable choices in the future. Sensory activities are very important for a child’s development. Being a Child Life Specialist, I will have the opportunity to do sensory activities with kids in hospitals, and this would be a fun one to do because it teaches children about ocean pollution in a way that they understand.

As a country, we go through around 13 billion pounds of paper towels each year. This is astounding and unbelievable. However, we can help reduce this number by making our own “unpaper towels.” By sewing pieces of fabric together, we can make reusable paper towels. After using them, just wash and they are ready to go again! Think about how much paper this would save!

Amazon is my favorite website in the whole wide world. I get at least one Amazon package a week on my front porch. These products from Amazon will not only save you money, but will also help the environment. For example, the reusable sandwich bags will allow less plastic to be thrown away. I am going to order the silicone baking mats because I have plenty of time to bake during this 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic.

I cook many times during the week; it is one of my favorite things to do! Unfortunately, this means I have a lot of dishes to clean, which is not the fun part. I go through a lot of sponges, probably two or three a month, which could add up to 24-36 sponges a year! Through this up cycling project, I can make my own sponges! Upcycling simply means we convert discarded materials into something of equal or greater value. Here, we are taking cotton quilting fabric, old funnel bedding and thing toweling to make your own sponges!

This link is to a blog written by a 21-year-old woman that lists 10 ethical and sustainable clothing brands that are made by recycled products or products that help raise awareness to organizations that try to save lives. My mom loves bees, so I think I am going to order her a shirt from Tees for Bees. 10% of their proceeds go to support bee conservancy. I need more sports bras, so I am going to order some from Bamboo Clothing! They make their clothing from bamboo.By purchasing items from these brands, we are helping the environment.

A Child Life Specialist’s main job is to make life in the hospital simpler and more understandable for kids who are experiencing trauma or have debilitating diseases. These fun sustainability projects made for kids would allow them to better understand sustainability while having fun, which could help our future generations. It would teach them sustainability in a way that they would understand.

Ocean life has always been very interesting to me, and sea creatures are my favorite type of animals. Everything I can do to help reduce plastic in our oceans, which in turn saves sea creatures’ lives, I want to do. I have joined the “reusable revolution” and always share and/or higher big name items instead of buying my own. I want to start choosing products made from recycled materials.

This organization is asking for donations of mascara wands because they are perfect to help remove fly eggs and larva from animals’ fur. The tiny bristles are perfect for thus. I do not use eyeliner, so I use a lot of mascara. I will definitely be recycling my wands from now on to this organization. Click on the link above for the flyer!

Being a Child Life Specialist, I will be going through some serious markers. We use markers on a daily basis for arts and crafts. Knowing that we can send them to Crayola to recycle them, I will be getting the whole hospital staff to recycle their markers. I would even take charge of this project if I needed to!

I love everything related to cooking, especially on how to store food in a sustainable way. I hate plastic Tupperware because it does not last long and it is not good for the environment. Storing food in glass containers, reusing glass jars and freezing food in stainless steel containers all cuts down on our use of plastic. Sea turtles are my favorite animals and plastic straws really harm them in their environment, so I always use a reusable straw when possible. I had never thought about covering leftovers with a plate or cloth, so I will definitely be doing that from now on!
