Progress and Process
Officially done with the project! Some things I would like to do later on would be add more narratives as I dream more inside the house, add a neighborhood and backyard outside the house so when looking out the windows and on the balcony, there isn’t just empty space. Had a few issues the day of presentation, but Bill swooped in and saved the day. Also want to add some more colliders to objects, there are certain points in the experience where it’s possible to get stuck on something so you have to restart to be able to continue playing. I also want to put in personal photos in all the picture frames so its more personable when playing.
Reflection
It feels so good to finally be done! I’ve worked hard for 6 months on this project and I am honestly so happy with it and glad I got the extra time to work on it, its so much better than it would have been if I had to turn it in by the original deadline. Originally, I was not thrilled with the idea of putting in narratives, but honestly I am really happy that I did and want to continue adding to this project.

Progress and Progress
I have almost furnished the entire house. I just need to finish a couple rooms and small details. The knight is just there for scale, he was the only free person i found in asset store and I want to make sure everything is scaled correctly.  Next is animating all the doors, and adding colliders in every room, for each narrative to start on collision entering the room. I want to discuss with you about the narrative, I think I need some help with it.
Reflection:
REALLY need to start writing the narrative but want to talk with Laleh first to make sure i get everything straight before starting. I’ve never really done narrative things and want to get it right the first time. Want a better idea of what you are looking for. but its a big step up from what I had before in the last blog.

Progress and Process:

I’ve added all the windows, doors, and textures that I want. My next step is importing it into Unity, which I need Bill’s help for and I will be getting that tomorrow. I need to add door animations, also getting Bill’s help with that. Will be adding the rest of the furniture this week, so the house is complete in that regard. My next big step is getting the narrative and the Unity stuff done.
Reflection:
Need to tweak some of the windows, possibly some doors later on, like making the balcony doors glass instead of regular wood, and adding some of the lattice type things in the windows (talking about the + shapes in the windows that would hold the panes together)
I’m getting started with the narrative, but have been all over the place. Have had a few more dreams which is definitely helping. Going to ask for help from people who are better at narratives that I am, because I realize I don’t have enough material from my dreams, I should have documented it better in the beginning because now its really fuzzy and faded on the details, so will be making some stuff up. Asking Sherlock from class for help, and my cousin who is great with narratives, she used to write and direct plays, so thats right up her alley. Will touch base on Tuesday.

Progress and Process:
working on the UV map for my house, so I can add all the appropriate textures in Unity (Currently trying to figure out how to do it with such a large scale model, with so many pieces to it. Goal is to finish by the end of the week.) working on the narrative, what I am going to say for each of the rooms I want to include. Goal is to be done with what I am going to say by the end of the week. Will be seeking help for this, narrative isn’t my strongest skill.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The narrative is going to be the most important piece I work on next as well as getting it to work with unity flawlessly and adding those mechanics. I’ve narrowed down the rooms I want to have a narrative in, with filler ambient sounds when the narrative is not playing
Narrative Rooms: living room, office, master bedroom, kitchen, downstairs living room, my room and the nanny’s quarters. Might narrow down later depending but this narrows it down a lot and helps me focus my attention on those rooms.
Updated Schedule:
Week 7: finish UV map/make a roof/add textures in Maya/Unity; work on narrative, put windows in
Week 8: start recording narrative, adding Unity mechanics to have narrative start playing when you walk into a certain room, room changes ( “versions” )
Week 9: Finishing touches to narrative, add interactive elements/mechanics
Week 10: Troubleshoot bugs, finishing touches with filling the house with objects, MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WORKS
Reflection:
Just need to add some finishing touches to the house (like a roof, the doors, finish UV mapping so I can add textures to the house in Unity) and then I can seriously start working on the narrative for my project and all the interactions within the house, I’m thinking opening doors, picking up a picture frame possibly, looking inside a closet (like with my room maybe?)
Midterm Feedback:
Actual Feedback:
Is it on a track? If so, make it slower moving, as to absorb all of the scenery.
Could be interesting to add some textures and colors to the walls and floor. I would add a roof overhead and maybe even images outside of the windows
The rendering of the couch looks nice. What is the incentive for people who are going to explore this house? Are they going to be able to interact with specific furniture?
We have discussed this before about how you have had trouble with the sizing of the first person camera and that sometimes it can seem too small or too big compared to the perspective. I think this is something important to try and work on before the final and I wish you luck. Be aware of the audio that you use and really think about what it is trying to portray in each room. I also think that trying to narrate each room may be a lot of work and overwhelming for the viewer. Perhaps try and pick several main rooms and create a narrative in them, this creates a sense of curiosity for the viewer as they kind of have to hunt down the rooms with the narratives and also keep them interested in the VR.
More details inside--pictures on the walls, etc, would a slight floating mechanic drive home the dream concept?
Emily and I have enjoyed discussing 3D modeling. She is doing a unique real state / dream state model of her home. The project seems to be going very well. Aesthetically, the map looks really pleasing. I will be interested to see what the polished final result looks like. She overcame a serious boolean glitch problem.
You've done a really modeling the furniture and paying attention to the details of your house. I'm wondering if you created a picture frame in a few of the rooms and displayed what you looked like at each age to demonstrate the passing of time. This could not only show your personal connection to the house, but a picture of you at 6 and then 16 would connect the user to how you're changing along with the home.
Generalized: Add textures, colors, paintings on the walls. Add roof and images outside of the house so if you looked out the window you wouldn’t be staring into nothingWork on narrative (instead of a narrative for each room, recommended to have a narrative in only a few of the rooms that connect with each other and don’t overwhelm the player. Adding picture frames with pictures of me in them at a certain age, and have the picture change to an older version of me (age 6 changes to age 16) so the player has a connection to what is happening with the house.
So thats the feedback that I got (when I checked it last) and I will be adding all the textures, pictures to go in the picture frames on the walls, colors and a roof which will come later. I don’t think people realized that I do plan to do all that, I just had a lot of issues and fell behind because of it so I wasn’t able to put all that in. I’m addressing the textures next since I am working on the UV maps for that to happen. I like the idea of having pictures of me progress (age 6 turns to age 16) and would be really cool to follow the narrative and have that picture change correspond with that somehow.

Progress and Process:
I did not anticipate how long putting in doors would take. Still need to add windows but thats a minor thing. Going to import into unity this week and walk through the house in VR for the first time now that I can get into all the rooms. then start putting in the details with the furniture with the unity asset store.
Reflection: I need to speed up what I’m doing, start making the furniture, and finding the textures for everything and especially start setting up the VR and begin the coding.
Inspiration:
Thought this article was really neat, and that the possibility that virtual reality might help you be more in control when dreaming.
https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2016/09/virtual-reality-may-help-you-control-your-dreams/500156/
I agree with this article I can see how cost effective doing VR walkthroughs before beginning a construction project can save time and money. Since I am doing an architectural type project with the house, I felt this was relevant in a way. Struggling to find articles that relate since dream scape and dreaming are hot terms for VR and companies.

Week 3 Process Blog
Progress and Process:
Have completed both levels now, added stairs to connect the two levels in VR, my next task is to add all the doors (and windows) and create door animations so you can enter the rooms and have that added animation/ effect that makes it feel more real. I plan on using almost all the same doors, make 1 or 2 doors, use it throughout the house so its easier for me, work smarter not harder. Making the furniture and adding textures are next on the agenda.
Reflection:
Doing good on schedule, a little bit ahead, this week I was supposed to finish the interior, and all I have to do for that is add doors and windows where need be. Want to be able to test my house in VR by the end of the week, see how the house feels in VR.
Inspiration:
I am very inspired by George Nijland’s work. His work makes you think twice about what is photographed vs whats 3D modeled and rendered. You have to really examine the photos to be able to see which is which. I want to try to make my work as realistic as this.

like the ideas in this, plan on using unity as well, and create a virtual environment around the house I have modeled so theres less work for me since Unity is great at making outdoor environments very easily.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rh5XSD83jqg
I like the natural sounds that is occurring in this, it seems somewhat real other than the fact you know its VR.
https://www.archdaily.com/885181/soon-architects-will-be-able-to-create-3d-models-from-inside-their-vr-headset
This would make my life so much easier if I could model all the things in virtual reality, hopefully this technology will be available sometime soon.
Started the base of my house, added the two windows in the front, still trying to figure out how to add the center doorway without messing up with polygons that would cause trouble later on if I needed to adjust something. I am having my mom look through photos at home for pictures of the house and the interior, (since I’m here and she’s in California).
Feedback from Project Proposal
Reward for the exploration
Different time periods (different heights)
Significance of what they dream.
I plan on having the VR experience start out with a height of a child and as it starts to progress and you explore the rooms, your height starts to gradually increase until you are the height of a regular adult. I will have the furniture reflect the “age” that the user is currently and if they go back to a room at the “older” age the furniture will be different. Not sure how I will do that yet, but that is something for a later date since I need to get all my modeling done.
Screenshot of the beginnings of my house model is posted below

Capstone Project Proposal
I want to 3d model the house I grew up in. I have had many recurring dreams in this house specifically, and it has evolved and been “renovated" in my dreams as I have grown older. Which I find super interesting, especially since I have lived in three other houses while I was growing up, this is the house that I always end up in when I am dreaming. I want to model the original version of the house with the original rooms and then have “versions” of those rooms because they have been changed in my dreams. So close the door, open it again, see a different version of the room. So there will be two versions of the house. One with the original and the room variations as I’ve dreamt them, and the second with an entirely new interior that I recently dreamed about and I want both to have walkthrough experiences and narratives to go along with them.  The versions of the rooms will just be changing furniture, color of the walls, how the furniture is staged and the narrative that goes with it. If I have the time, I want to make an entirely different interior of the house for one of the dreams I had where it was basically gutted and everything inside was redesigned, but only if I have time for that. But mainly the version one house with the same layout I grew up with and the different versions of the rooms I’ve dreamt in.
Skills needed: 3D modeling experience, know how to use unity and coding Resources needed: Autodesk Maya, Unity (provided by EDP, also have the program on my personal laptop), Oculus Rift
Deliverables: have a 3d modeled environment completed, textured, and rendered. Narrative completed and have the narrative interact with the environment as the user walks through it. Interactions to show the different versions completed. Overall I’d like the whole thing to be seamless and work with no bugs but thats far fetched
Schedule:
Week 1: concept and design finished
Week 2: exterior of house modeled
Week 3: rooms and inside layout finished + start working on furniture
Week 4: main furniture done (couches, dining table, beds, chairs, etc)
Week 5: start working on small items, toys, countertop items, hangers, closet stuff
Week 6: continue working on household items, filler stuff
Week 7: work on different room versions
Week 8: start working on narrative and recording
Week 9: Import into unity, add colliders for narration to start in certain areas
Week 10: Finish whatever isn’t done or working

Emily Rehwald, Embroidered Image/Circuit, 6″ x 4.5
I made an embroidered low poly fox that has a detachable tail that acts as the switch, so when you snap the tail onto the fox, it turns the LED on in the nose and completes the circuit.
