decides to use his life, to step into the fight, to put himself in mortal danger, all so a young girl can have autonomy over her own body and reproductive choices?

Because most of these people after Ciri don't want to kill her. They want to use her body, essentially, her uterus, to gain power. In that setting, a monarchical society, that is not unusual. It's common.

But all Ciri has to do is tell Geralt she doesn't want any of those things.

And he puts everything on the line for, bringing her to Kaer Morhen, putting his body in between hers and mortal danger, simply to allow her the dignity of deciding what happens to her own body. Who she has sex with. Who she marries. Whether she has a child or not.

I'm fine. Just in my feelings again about Geralt of Rivia.

Just so y’all know: I can’t speak for every other fic author but I can say that I remember when people leave me kind comments. I recognize your urls and/or usernames on AO3. I remember you and sometimes in writing my fics I think to myself, “Oh, I hope this person sees this because they liked x in this other fic I did.”

A piece of media: This is a complex story where no one is evil and no one is a saint. People are a reflection of their world, their life experiences and trauma. Morality depends on context from which you view the character. You are not supposed to find every character good or even likable. You can take sides and find real life parallels but the biggest point is to make you think and maybe recognize the flaws in yourself as well as the goodness in those you hate.

Tumblr: okay so THIS is the bad person and THIS is the good person. This is the oppressor and this is the oppressed. This is the abuser and this is their victim. If you like this EVIL character you are clearly the same as my asshole dad who reminds me of this character. Not taking a moralistic stance on a fictional story means you are amoral. Analysis is actually about figuring out who the bad-est person is so you can disavow them and who the good-est person is so you can root for them. The media you consume reflects your values and the characters you find interesting are clearly the ones who are exactly the same as you.

the other aspect of disco elysium that i’ve never really talked about, and the aspect of harry i don’t think is discussed enough, is that pre-game harry is…he’s heavily implied to be cruel. and awful. vindictive and bitter and angry, unpleasant to be around, toxic and resentful. jean and dora, and harry’s own perception of himself in his dreams and his conversations with the hanged man, make this pretty clear. but as the player we can do something amazing:

we can make him kind. right from the beginning.

and most of us do. our harry is silly, and whimsical, and sad, very sad, but he’s funny and curious. and kind. he wants to sing karaoke in a hotel bar. he offers his hat to a young girl out alone in the cold. he helps an old woman in a wheelchair search for a mythical creature, even if he doesn’t believe it’s possible. the weight is you and your hate, but you can lift it. disco elysium gives you something broken and ugly and full of resentment and lets you make it something that’s still ugly, sure, and still pretty broken, but it’s getting better. recovery and healing are always within reach. kindness is always an option.
