       “ yeah, absolutely. those phones are flimsy as SHIT. just tossing the thing on your bed could crack the screen, ”  emmett carried on with her deprecating quip, fishing his own phone out of his pocket to reveal several cracks throughout the protective tempered glass layer.  his testimony against the model might not have included a few  major  details in between of why those imperfections cut into the screen came to be, but that was all very much besides the point.  “ so, i say it’s worth a shot — see if they call your bluff or not. ya’ never know, might get another flimsy phone out of it. ”  a smirk gingerly tugged at the corners of his mouth, eyeing the diner they’d been so closely approaching before rosalie’s phone took its final tumble and went extinct.  “ listen, fuck your phone. i mean, yeah, it sucks — i’m sorry for your loss.  but it’s not the end of the world yet; you’re still getting that burger, with yours truly.  i’ll even get you a milkshake to help you mourn, ” he offered, attempting to make the meal sound as enticing as he possibly could.  the smirk emmett had been sporting soon evolved into his renown, slanted grin, dark eyebrows raising expectantly at the blonde as he began to slowly walk backwards towards the diner.  “ C’MON, rose. ”

     rosalie looked down at the shattered remains of her phone before gingerly picking it up in an attempt to not cut herself on the shards of glass. she tried to power it back on, but it seemed that it was not going to happen. it was toast, that much was clear. “so,” she mused, “think i could get away with saying this was normal wear and tear?” the question was more of a joke at her misfortune than anything else, but she was really  regretting not getting that extra insurance when she’d bought it a few months ago after losing her last one at a sorority party. and she was regretting not backing it up anytime since. “this seriously  blows. all i wanted was a burger as a reward for finishing a really shitty assignment, and this is what i get.”

       “ i ever tell you how much i LOVE when you break the rules? it’s like rebel without a cause, but with you. and hot, ” he enthused, lips splitting at the seam to display pearly whites in a lopsided smile.  despite being the lovable giant of the olympic coven, he committed his fair share of rebellion to cover almost all of the cullens collectively; never pushing through any extremities, but certainly toeing the line to earn himself a scolding.  rosalie taking the reigns to show her level of  badassery  from time to time was just another simple thing that always had emmett fawning over her.  he never acted like she was made out of porcelain, instead inciting her when others reckoned he shouldn’t.

       “ yeah, if you’ve ever taken one.  flip-hoppin’ all over the place, you’re like a ninja on crack, ”  he huffed in a ludic display of hoaxed annoyance — the nerve of them excelling at this one on one duel while HE couldn’t keep up fast enough to even land a hit.  emmett and his sibling, so to speak, were out in a small clearing encircled by the thick forest, practicing to hone their fighting abilities.  initially, he’d wanted nothing more than to have gloating rights over managing to catch them off guard, but the burly brunet had decided to save his efforts for one of his brothers, considering successfully pulling such a feat on alice would most likely never be heard of, what with their vision ability.  a lopsided smile broke through his act finally, arms rising to take a readily stance in preparation for another round.  “ but i’ll catch ya’ one of these times. ”

       “ i’ll have you know i’m one of the greatest actors of all time. hollywood would kill for me. in fact, pretending to be deaf is one of my specialties, ” which was usually when emmett wanted to do something that carlisle, esme, AND rosalie already voiced their disapproval upon. skipping class to set off a prank for their following class, however, was well worth missing a lecture he’d heard some variation of for the last twenty years. there was a roguish smirk soon tugging at the corners of his lips, and a mischievous glint to his dark golden eyes as he rubbed his hands together out of sheer anticipation. “ now … show me some  badass  chemist mixture and light this sucker up. i wanna see this thing hit through the roof when mrs. priestly tries to do a demonstration. ”

       while pet names were adored and welcomed with open arms when they came from esme, the ‘ darling ’ aro so fluidly dropped ( as he usually did whenever emmett had been around to witness it ) was like venom dripping from a snake’s fangs.  it left the gentle giant feeling somewhat uneasy and uncertain of the other’s underlying motives, which was generally the effect the entire volturi had on him, not that he would ever openly admit to that voluntarily.  “ forgive me if i’d sooner trust alice and their visions over you and your own.  —it’s a sibling bond, thing. ”

       everything had been fine; perfectly normal, as normal could be for a VAMPIRE.  they were out hunting, emmett, carlisle and the others, but the former two had somehow branched off from the latter, which emmett was currently grateful for, considering he was suffering from some sort of panic attack — or flashback, as carlisle clearly assessed the situation. it was most likely triggered by the bear he’d been tracking, as the last memory he had of his human life consisted of being ruthlessly mauled by one.  “ i— ” dark eyes, which had been wildly scanning the thick forest surrounding them, finally settled on his father figure, as instructed.  if emmett’s heart was still a properly functioning organ, it most likely would have been beating out of his chest at this point.  still, he was able to poke fun, even while HE was in distress.  “ if this is what humans feel like all the time, i’m glad i don’t remember it. ”

       “ yeah, ‘cause it’s boring AS FUCK. ” emmett finally murmured through a sleepy daze, eyelids remaining shut as he sucked in a deep breath, then exhaled slowly.  the library was considerably quiet; a place where students alike flocked to study for an important test or to do extensive research for a paper, or ( in emmett’s case ) to catch a few winks of undisturbed shuteye.  the fraternity house where he resided on campus was the last place to go in order to catch up on much needed sleep, which was sad because he couldn’t even retire to his own bed — there was just too much commotion going on at all times between his frat brothers and whoever else they invited inside to party.  so, that was the simple reason why he was currently sprawled out across one of the larger, cushioned chairs, close by to where jasper had set up.  “ —uh, y’know ... no offence or anything. i just don’t get how you do this all the time. ”

jasper could firmly say that the past week had taken it out of him. he was currently curled up in the corner of the library with a coffee sitting out by his neglected textbook, two things that jasper rarely had. early mornings combined with late nights had never treated him well, considering he had a pretty rigid sleeping schedule. he just wished he could focus for more than a moment on his reading for his literature course, as he felt his eyes grow heavier. he groaned quietly into the tabletop, “i’m never going to get this finished.”

       “ aw c’mon, dude— it’s not THAT bad, ” but it was fairly close to being that bad, despite emmett’s persistent optimism.  the fact that even just ten people, more or less, had braved the haunting rumours for a good time was enough encouragement for the brunet not to give up so easily on their little escapade.  “ who doesn’t like spooky shit these days? i mean, if the sheer thrill of potentially being possessed by old man roberts himself doesn’t get your rocks off, what’re you even doing here? ”  lips split at the seam to display pearly whites in a slanted grin, baby blue hues eying the other before taking a swig from the beer bottle in hand.  “ man ... seriously? i can’t believe casper would turn you into a drop out. ”
