Honestly, if someone was going to fuck this up for him, it was going to be Theo, not Addie. He didn’t need anyone’s help with the self-sabotage. So far, he hadn’t felt that knee-jerk reaction to burn things down and run, and he hoped he never did. It would hurt if Emmett decided to end things, but in an unusual turn of events, Theo found that preferable to hurting him. He wanted him too much to be the one walking away, even for the sake of self-preservation.

“You’re important,�� he said softly, brushing a thumb over that plush bottom lip as he pulled back from the kiss. He knew Emmett knew that, that they wouldn’t be doing the family thing at all if he wasn’t important, but some things still needed to be said. Theo couldn’t count on himself to think of it all the time, since his family wasn’t much for verbal expression, so he had to make sure he said them out loud when he did.

He’d broken every rule he had for Theo already, and he cared less and less about it. The man made him happy, and that wasn’t anything he was used to feeling with someone else. He wondered just what they could make of this, and he really wanted to find out. Protecting himself, staying far away, it didn’t even cross his mind anymore, if it ever had where Theo was involved.  Catching his wrist gently, he kissed the pad of his thumb, his eyes on his. “So are you,” he murmured, the fingers of his other hand soothing through his hair. He didn’t have anyone to introduce Theo to, no one in his corner, so for him to bring Addie into it felt a little staggering to him, but he wouldn’t change it.

Theo had no idea what he would have done if Addie and Emmett decided they didn’t like each other. He wasn’t keen on getting rid of either of them, and it would unnecessarily complicate his life to have to move around them. Addie was permanent in his life. She knew that, and he guessed she’d play nice for his sake unless Emmett set off some serious alarm bells. Anything else would be using that bond against him, and they tried not to do that to each other.

“I’ve seen her do it,” he agreed with a soft chuckle. Both twins had a low tolerance for boredom, but Addie was the more likely to make it someone else’s problem. He thought a part of her enjoyed the drama, as long as it wasn’t constant. “No, definitely not.” He’d have gotten Emmett out of there quicker if she’d gotten vicious, not because he couldn’t handle it but because he shouldn’t have to. His hand drifted lazily along his thigh, enjoying the comfort of him and the fact that the two people he liked most actually seemed to like each other. “Thank you, for going,” he added softly.

If Addie had made it emphatically clear that she didn’t like him, he wouldn’t have put Theo in a position for any kind of dancing around or between them. He couldn’t have just left, he knew that without a doubt, but it would have given way to a serious discussion. Addie didn’t give off the impression of someone who changed her mind, but her decisions on a person weren’t on a whim, either. 

“Not surprising at all,” he grinned, shaking his head in amusement. The twins were frighteningly similar in same ways, mannerisms that had Emmett tipping his head to watch them displayed identically in two different people. But then, there were moments they were drastically different. He wouldn’t be bored any time soon. His hand slid gently through his hair and he gave him a soft smile. “Thank you for wanting me to,” he murmured, tipping his head to kiss him softly. He never would have thought that things would wind up like this with them.

Emmett held his own with her far better than most people, and better than Theo had a right to expect. None of the wolves were easy people, but especially not to a potential threat against one of them. He couldn’t really blame Addie for putting her hackles up. He might have done the same in her position, but he might not. Theo’s line was further than hers, but once he was pushed over it, the consequences were usually worse. There wouldn’t be threats from him about hurting her, but it wouldn’t be pretty if someone ever did.

He drank at least half of his own water before setting it aside, and he took the opportunity to snuggle closer when it was offered. “That would be a mistake,” he agreed with an amused smile. Complacency was never a good idea with Addie. In just about every aspect of her life, she needed someone who could keep up with her. “She liked you,” he added, more seriously. “There would have been a lot more threats if she didn’t. You held your own. I can’t really imagine it going better.”

He had wanted that particular meeting to go well, for Theo’s sake, because he wanted him happy and he knew that Addie was a huge part of that. It didn’t matter that this was new. He’d been paying attention. He’d felt like he was being watched by judge, jury, and potential executioner if it went south, but he’d expected that. He pitied anyone who tried to take on that Wolffe and failed, honestly.  Wrapping his arm around him, he tipped his face to press it into Theo’s hair happily. “Pretty sure she would eat anyone who bored her, for fun,” he chuckled, “I like that about her.” And he did, for all that she was intimidating by her very nature, he’d liked her. “I don’t think it would have lasted as long as it did otherwise,” he mused, tipping his head ot look at him.

Theo had done everything he could to prepare Emmett for meeting Addie and vice versa, but he knew nothing he could say would compare to the reality of her. He loved his twin sister more than anyone in the world, and she was extremely likeable when she wanted to be. He’d never had to introduce her to someone who was important to him though. He’d never *had* anyone who was important to him like Emmett was, and that alone would have her coming at him teeth bared and claws out. 

It had gone better than he could have hoped, all things considered, and no lasting damage done. He wasn’t entirely sure the two of them getting along would be a good thing for him, but he and Addie had always been a package deal. He offered a bottle of water as he took a seat next to him on the couch. They’d been drinking most of the night, and he could do without the hangover. The living room was in blues and grays, and like most of his apartment there photographs and prints everywhere. “Good. Only half as bratty as I was expecting. I think we got some best behavior in there,” he chuckled softly.

He’d known that nothing was going to entirely protect him from Addie, and he hadn’t minded it. He should have, but there were a lot of things about what he was doing with Theo that weren’t in line with anyone else. It was nice for him to know that there was someone so solidly in Theo’s corner and always would be. It took away some of that worry at the back of his mind if he fucked it all up eventually.  Happily accepting the bottle of water, he cracked it to take a long drink before closing it back and holding out an arm in invitation. He’d rather not be hungover when there were much better ways to spend a morning these days. It was a stark read on who they were looking at their apartments. Identical layout, but drastically different. Emmett’s read like an emotionally distant showroom and Theo’s read like him. “I think she’s holding on to some of it, doesn’t want me to get complacent,” he pointed out with a little grin. “And only like... five, no, six, definitely six threats against my person.”

He had known that meeting Addie was going to be one hell of a ride from start to finish. At least he’d been prepared for it, because as new as his thing with Theo was, they spent more time talking than people probably would expect. He was smart enough to expect the subtle barbs that she came at him with when he’d been the least prepared for them, but he could tell the moment she’d decided he got to stay. After that, it was easy to picture spending plenty of time with both of them together, and as expected, he’d witnessed not one, but two Addie Wolf Rants™.  Settling down on the couch in Theo’s apartment, he looked over at him with a little smile. “You know, she was only half as mean as I was expecting her to be at the beginning,” he teased gently.  @raisedxbywolves​

They were both taking leaps of faith and learning trust as they went, unlike anything he’d done. He was slowly starting to trust that Theo would be solid for him if he needed it. Their conversations had been far from soft at times and they were both still there. 

Much like how they had spent the night cuddling, he was content to just hold him and kiss him lightly, no chasing or spurring on any heat. It was going to take Theo at least as long to trust that he could be solid for someone besides Addie. He knew himself too well to think that would come naturally to him, but Emmett was the only person in a long time to make him want to try. The protective instinct was already there, and it was reassuring. He wanted him to be okay too much to hurt him. He hoped.

He didn’t have the rebound to chase any real heat with him just yet, even after food and a break. Later, maybe, although cuddling with him again was just as tempting. He liked the sound of that warm chuckle, could feel it in his chest the way he was pressed against him, and he smiled. “Alright, then. What are we doing today?” He didn’t mind being along for the ride in whatever plans he happened to have for the day.

It was unprecedented for Theo to lean on another person like this, even if it was just in something that was long over. He was trusting that Emmett wouldn’t break or pull away though, a little at a time the longer this went on. He wanted to be the same for him, something solid to lean against, not because either of them needed it but because it was nice not to have to go it alone all the time.

He tightened his arms around him, content to keep those kisses soft and light. “So sweet,” he murmured. Much as he’d like to stay in Emmett’s arms, they were through breakfast and cleanup, and he probably had things to do on his day off. Theo had laundry and grocery shopping that he was cheerfully ignoring right now. “What are you up to today? I’m free all day, but I can get out of your hair if you have things to do.”

“I’ll do my best,” he chuckled softly. Theo was nobody’s hero, but he had a feeling wanting to protect Emmett would come easily. There were very few people who fit into that category for him, but he was ferociously loyal to the ones that did. He didn’t know how he’d made the list so fast, but the idea of anything hurting him made him want to go feral.

It was strange to have that level of understanding, but it just made him feel all the more drawn to him. Weirder still to feel comforted by his presence, but he wasn’t in the mood to fight himself on that. He leaned gently into that kiss and let it ground him back in the present. That was probably enough splashing around in the past for one day, but he wasn’t sorry they’d had this conversation. “We’re good,” he decided with a smile. He and Addie were both more happy than not, and of the things that brought them down, family wasn’t usually high on the lost. He suspected they’d all more or less made their peace with it.

He absolutely believed him when he said that he would try, understanding that need to protect even when it made no sense for them to be on one another’s fierce protect lists so soon. He hadn’t thought he’d had one, or at least that his partner was about the only one. It put Theo on a highly exclusive list, he supposed. 

It was hard for him to imagine a time he would hold anything against Theo feeling the need to pull back. Whatever they were doing was uncharted waters. His hands slid up his back to sink into his hair, grounding himself that way to keep from getting too lost in Theo. “Good,” he chuckled softly against his lips, brushing over them, soft and repeated. He figured they were. Theo, at the very least, didn’t give off the vibe that he really really wasn’t and it was all a fun facade.

“Not that you need one,” he teased, nipping softly at the corner of his jaw. He knew Emmett didn’t need his protection. It was there anyway, if he happened to want it. Theo didn’t think there was any real cause for alarm in meeting Addie though. They’d probably get along great, and it would only mean trouble for him. He wasn’t sure yet exactly what they were to each other either, but they were in deep enough that it was going to be hard to explain it to her.

“It’s okay. It was a long time ago,” he said softly, fingers running a slow, soothing path along his side. It cropped up in his nightmares occasionally, but otherwise he didn’t spend a lot of his day to day thinking about it. As painful a truth as it was, his life had gotten a lot better after he left that house.

He nodded his agreement, always grateful that he had her. “It was always us against the world, but after that, we pretty much closed ranks against the rest of the family for a while. It’s better than it was, but we still get along best at a distance.” He wasn’t sure it was worth trying to rebuild those bridges. All the siblings seemed happier on their own, and Theo didn’t see the point in messing with something that worked for some idealized version of family that had never fit them in the first place.

“No, but it’s sweet of you to be one anyway,” he teased with soft laughter in his voice. His breath hitched at the soft press of his teeth and he couldn’t imagine a time he wasn’t going to be affected by him. He wasn’t too worried about not getting along with Addie. She was important to Theo and they got on just fine. It didn’t stop the slight intimidation.

He couldn’t understand how he was being soothed, despite doing the exact same thing to him just moments before. “Doesn’t change that I hate you went through it,” he murmured softly. his hand sliding softly along his back. It was strange how similar but different they were. He supposed it was a good thing, a level of understanding without being too close to home. 

His hand slid softly through his hair, unable to help it really, as he listened to him with a soft smile. “I mean, I can’t really blame you. That’s.... a lot... for anyone to deal with.” Tipping his head, he kissed him softly and he wouldn’t have been able to say who for. “As long as it works for y’all and you’re happy, nothing else really matters.”

Theo wasn’t sure he was capable of letting someone wait for him, not after watching it destroy his mother. Logically, he knew he tended to run in the opposite direction from anyone who was as codependent as that, and also that he wasn’t his father, but fear didn’t always respond to logic. He also knew he was reckless enough to burn it down himself before it came to that because he’d done it before. Leaving without attachments was the first rule of the road.

“I’d never leave you alone with a she-wolf first thing.” He smirked at the idea, amused even if it would never happen. Addie was a lot even with Theo there to run interference. They often met each other’s dates because they had the same friends and hung out in the same places, and he preferred groups because it kept things casual. Introducing her to someone who actually meant something to him would be different for all of them.

It was the first time he’d ever allowed someone to comfort him while he told this story. It gave it a level of surrealness that he wasn’t familiar with, but he didn’t hate it like he would have with most people. He leaned into him, glad to accept the soft touches, despite knowing that it only got worse from there. He nodded confirmation. “We came home from a late shift and found her. Addie practically tackled me out of the room so I wouldn’t see. It was too late, but that’s what I remember most, aside from the obvious.”

A lot of his memories of that night were patchy after that point, the conversations with the police all running together, but he’d never forget that. That her first instinct wasn’t to rush to their mother’s side, but to protect him. It wasn’t like there was time for a conversation about it. It was a knee-jerk response, something that could never, ever be faked, and he knew he would have done exactly that same thing if he’d happened to be walking in front of her that night. They always protected each other. That loyalty was the one thing in his life he never had to question.

Emmett wasn’t one to wait for anyone. He hadn’t even waited for his mother as a child. There was no reason in his life for him to start now, not to the detriment of himself. He wasn’t ever going to be the one to keep anyone with him or attached to him that didn’t want to be. 

Laughing softly, he shook his head in amusement, “My hero.” He didn’t mind the idea of Addie, of however much she might be. He didn’t know where he counted on the scales for Theo, wasn’t going to expect or bank on anything. He had his own teeth, maybe not like the wolfpack, but soft wasn’t in his usual wheelhouse. He’d learn, use it as much as Theo wanted or needed, but he knew it wasn’t expected. 

He didn’t really know how to do comfort, all he knew was that there was an ache in his chest for the children that Theo and Addie had been and he needed some way to soothe it. Sliding his fingers through his hair gently, he continued to listen and swallowed hard. “I’m so sorry, sweetheart, for both of you,” he said softly. “I’m glad you at least had each other.” That was the only real positive there that he could find.

It was one of the reasons Theo didn’t do any sort of long-term relationship. He knew he wouldn’t be around long enough, and he’d never wanted anyone waiting around for him. He wasn’t going to borrow trouble before it came for them though. He had a job here through the end of the year. It was months away, and if he and Emmett were still a thing by then, he might just be dead from the shock.

He’d barely tried to turn on the charm with Emmett. They’d had a realer, more down to earth rapport from the beginning. It was nothing like meeting someone in a bar. Given where they were, he wasn’t sorry about it. “You’ll find out and you can let me know,” he chuckled. The odds of him having a full conversation with Addie without her finding something to rant about (probably work) were small. He loved hearing her talk.

His face shadowed, but he’d expected they’d find their way onto the subject eventually. He’d prefer to get it out there, and from what Emmett had told him, he knew he could handle it. “No, she was alone,” he said softly. “Addie and I were the only ones living at home then. We worked night shifts at the diner while we finished high school. The neighborhood was shitty, but she wouldn’t leave. It was a B&E gone wrong. Fuckin’ neighbors didn’t even call the cops.”

He’d be happy to spend all his free time in Emmett’s arms. Observing his hot neighbor from a distance had in no way prepared him for how damn comforting it was to be pressed against him, or to be able to kiss him whenever he felt like it (which was always). He hummed softly, smiling at his choices. “I’ve never been to New Zealand. That sounds amazing.”

He had heard before that there were people that were worth waiting for. He hadn’t believed it was really true, but that was starting to change. There was really no reason to borrow trouble, and he’d happily take Theo for as long as he could have him. If there was still a bridge to cross at that point, then they would. 

The rapport they had was certainly unique, certainly more real and surprisingly solid than most this early. Theo really didn’t have to turn on the charm with him, he was charmed enough without it. “I’m sure you’ll be there to hear it for yourself.” He chuckled how it was immediately a foregone conclusion that they’d spend plenty of time together for him to learn. 

Emmett hated seeing those shadows cross his handsome face, mostly because he understood them before he even heard the story. His hand slid up his back as he listened, his heart aching for both of them. “I’m so sorry,” he murmured softly, pressing his lips to his forehead. “Please tell me neither of you found her,” he said quietly, the idea of it filling him with pain that he wasn’t familiar with. 

He would happily spend all his extra time holding Theo, as much as he wanted. He would even more happily take every single kiss because he always seemed to want them. Dipping his head, he kissed him lightly with a quiet hum. “I figured that’s a good list to start with.”

“All together? Years. Sometimes nine, ten months at a time. Sometimes I’d only be home again for a month or two before the next one. It depended on the jobs. The stability’s been nice with this one.” He didn’t miss the traveling yet, but he knew he would eventually. But he also wasn’t twenty-two anymore. He couldn’t get by on two hours of sleep and a different country every six months. He’d started picking things closer to home even before this.

“If you’d met us both in a club, you’d think we were practically the same person,” he chuckled. “But outside of that, no, we’re completely different. She’s a contradiction all by herself. You’ve got the bookish history nerd, and also the first one of us to throw a punch if someone looks at her wrong.” There was obvious fondness when he spoke about her, even listing things other people might think of as faults. It was just how Addie was, and he loved every side of her.

There were no lines crossed, nothing he was saying that wasn’t true or that Theo hadn’t already come to the same conclusion on. “Trust me, it’s better if we don’t. The only thing we really know how to do together is fight. Sid… tried, when they first moved here. I know she wants a family, but it was late for that. They weren’t there when our mom died. I guess you could say Addie and I weren’t all that forgiving.” He wasn’t sure if he was still holding a grudge about that, but he was pretty sure it didn’t matter either way anymore. Nobody was trying to repair it. If he was being honest, he didn’t care if they ever did. He’d always been fine with just Addie in his life.

He went easily into the tug, curling an arm around his waist. “I like it too,” he admitted, leaning into those soft kisses. His fingers ran softly through the hair at the back of his neck, and he couldn’t do anything but smile back. “That doesn’t really narrow it down. Top three?”

He hummed quietly in understanding and could see the appeal of it. It wasn’t like Theo had just been adrift. He’d had a solid, stable connection that he knew would always be waiting when he got back home. There was a selfish, new part of him that was glad to know that he wasn’t gone quite like that anymore. He’d never begrudge him the trip, would actively encourage it. It was strange to have someone he knew he would actually miss. 

Laughing, he could picture how devastating they could be together. Theo was bad enough on his own. “I can picture that. I’m sure she’s something to listen to when she’s on a tangent, of any sort.” The more he talked about her, the more he looked forward to meeting Addie, even as he got a little more terrified of it. 

He wasn’t sure which was worse, not having anyone in any sense of the word, or having a family that didn’t seem like much of a family. “You said they were all scattered. You and Addie were with her, then?” There was a soft ache in his chest for the younger Theo and his sister. 

Having Theo in his arms was far nicer than he would have thought before it had actually become a reality for him. He could hold and kiss him longer than he’d ever wanted to with anyone before. His fingers slid softly under his shirt, brushing against soft skin. “Greece, Spain, and,” he trailed off as he gave serious thought to it, “New Zealand.”

“Sometimes my only address was a storage locker. But I guess it counts.” He smiled, shrugging. It wasn’t always worth it to pay rent when he knew he’d be overseas for long stretches of time, and Theo had never once been attached to the places he lived, house or apartment. He always thought of them as temporary. “She did, yeah. She loves it here. I don’t think she’d ever leave permanently.” Which meant he never would either. It was home as much as any place ever had been.

“No. It was just Addie and me at home back then. Our oldest brother, Hunt, was training recruits at the police academy. Alastar joined the Army right after high school. They both… tried to help. As much as they could from a distance. The rest of them were fucking around doing god knows what, but Sidney joined the police academy later on. I guess Hunt finally managed to straighten her out. I don’t think moving here had anything to do with us.” It was a blunt judgment call, but he honestly didn’t. It was years later, and from his perspective, there wasn’t a lot of family to salvage at that point.

“So there’s a look. Good to know,” he chuckled. There was a twinge in his chest to think of Emmett leaving, but Theo would be the last person to try to stop him, even if he thought he had that power. He’d always prefer to see the end coming than not, anyway. “Traveling for fun is a different thing though. Where do you want to go?” Traveling wasn’t the same as uprooting his whole life, although they both seemed to have taken care not to put down too many roots. It still wasn’t easy, and he couldn’t really imagine doing it as many times as Emmett had.

“With your job, that’s really not surprising. I mean, how long were you gone for various jobs?” He wanted to know everything he could about him, however small it seemed to be. He smiled softly at the idea of Addie being so in love with this city that she kept a tether for both of them. “For all that you two are twins, you seem really different to me. It’s cool,” he mused for him to hear. 

He frowned lightly at the information about the rest of their siblings, tucking mental tabs about them into his mind. “I hate to say it, babe, but it doesn’t sound like your family has a lot to do with each other at all. Outside of you and Addie, obviously,” he said gently, hoping he wasn’t crossing any boundaries. He had very clearly laid his loyalties on the side of Theo, which automatically included Addie. 

“I don’t know if there is,” he admitted with a shake of his head. Walking over, he wrapped an arm around his waist and tugged him close. “What I do know, is that I’ve got a lot more reason to stay and I like it that way,” he murmured, tipping his head to kiss him softly. “Eventually, I’d like to travel to other countries,” he admitted with a small smile.

“I guess it’s been more than ten years now. We were moving anyway so she could go to school, but we moved it up a bit after Ma died. No point sticking around after that. Most everyone else had already scattered.” It was strange to think he’d lived here more than a decade, but he’d spent large parts of it other places. It kept him from ever really settling in too much.

“What made you want to stay?” For someone who seemed to like to travel as much as Theo did, he was curious about what drew him to New York City to stay, at least for a while. It had the ease of habit to get the leftovers packed up and the dishes done. It felt like he’d done this a hundred times with Emmett, the way they already moved around each other in the space, only touching when it was obvious they wanted to.

“That’s a long time,” he hummed softly, wondering at the difference between Addie and Theo where she’d stay in one place for so long. “So she did school and everything here, too?” His eyebrow arched with interest, curious, as always, to know more about Theo, which included learning about Addie he now knew. “I take it the other two siblings that are here weren’t always?”

The question pulled a soft chuckle out of him and he shrugged lightly. “Honestly, at first it was an accident. I didn’t come here planning to stay,” he admitted with a little smile. It felt strangely easy to move in his space to work and clean up, like they’d been doing it far longer than they really had. “One day, my partner at work looked at me and said they were surprised they hadn’t seen the look yet that said I was leaving. And I realized that I like it here. I like my job, my partner, the city, and I finally don’t feel the need to keep going. I still want to travel, don’t get me wrong.”

He loved the city, but he loved a lot of cities. It wasn’t the reason he’d stayed, and if she ever had cause to move, he knew he’d be packing his bags alongside her. He could live without New York City, easy, but living without Addie wasn’t a question.

“I think you’d have to, if you were doing it right.” His grin was equally wicked, that one out of Emmett one of his favorites. He enjoyed his softness, but Theo was far more comfortable with the shadows. He had plenty of his own to keep them company. Breakfast seemed to be over, so he gathered some dishes and stood to start with the cleanup.

“I mean, that’s understandable. It’s a good reason to pick a place to stay,” he admitted with a small smile, “And probably the best reason to move.” It was something to envy, at least a little, that he had someone he knew he would  always be able to depend on. But he was glad that Theo had that, a stable connection that he was close to and genuinely loved. 

“Most definitely. Have to do it at least once,” he agreed easily. He enjoyed the sight of that wicked smile on Theo’s face and it made it very hard to keep his hands to himself. He reached over to pick up the last of the dishes to help clean up. “I settled here this go round like... two years ago?”

Theo was pretty sure he’d make an awful dad, and the logic was pretty simple there: don’t have children. He could barely commit to another adult, let alone a kid who’d depend on him. It would require a change of lifestyle he wasn’t sure he’d ever be ready for, although the idea that he’d be traveling into war zones for the next twenty years wasn’t exactly appealing either. He didn’t have to figure it out right now though.

“I’ve never been. Looks pretty in the pictures though.” For whatever reason, he’d made it across oceans but never all the way across his own country. “I don’t… remember a whole lot about New Orleans, so I’m assuming that means I had fun,” he admitted with a laugh. Going to Mardi Gras with Addie had been one of few trips where he went purely for fun and not for work. It had been a blast, although if he ever did it again, he’d like to drink less and remember more.

“Something tells me you’d like it,” he chuckled. ‘It’s no New York, but it’s pretty cool. A lot of good sea food, even more good Asian food.” In direct opposition, he’d never gone far out of the country but he’d been all over it. It had taken him a long time to figure out where he really wanted to settle when he’d decided that it was probably time to settle. 

A warm round of laughter escaped him and he nodded in agreement. “We can definitely agree on that,” he mused. “I’ve got a few dark spots in my own memories from there.” The admission was made with a wicked grin, those dark edges kicking in. Admittedly, he’d been younger and a lot more reckless.
