A reminder that while Death and the Maiden explores the meeting of beauty and mortality of the maiden and death it also symbolizes the moment when the maiden chooses death over an arranged fate that does not belong to her

Elain who was raised to be a valuable asset on the marriage market for her family, and who found herself once again shackled to a stranger she does not want ,will not remain silent. She will rebel against the expectations and choose her own fate ,choose Azriel who brings her solace who sees her, who she loves 🫶

Happy Elriel Month everyone! For today's prompt, @acourtofquietdreamers and I collaborated on this commission and we are so happy we got the chance to work with the talented @lynx_illustration again!

Her work always blows us away and she did a phenomenal job bringing the prettiest in Prythian to life 🩷

There's something so beautiful about two people who seem so different on the outside being drawn together so effortlessly. In this piece, we wanted to showcase the beauty created when light and dark blend together.

Elain and Azriel representing light and dark is one of the many reasons they make such a complimentary pair. While Azriel can help Elain embrace the darkness, Elain can show Azriel he's worthy of the light he's craved since he was a young boy trapped in a dark cell.

let her be weird. let her visions be a bit off putting. let her speak in cryptic riddles and pass haunting omens off as soft words spoken under the breath. let her be a bit creepy and foreboding in the way her words slip away, eyes going distant, mid-conversation only for her to smile politely and say “oh, nothing” when asked what’s wrong, never mind the Void just whispered some dark truth to her. by god just let let her be a little witchy freak seeress

For today’s prompt, I wanted to highlight Elriel’s light and dark aesthetic. Even though they have (thus far) been been personified as a contrast between light and dark, I can’t wait until we get their book and find out that, on a soul-deep level, they are very much made of the same stuff 💙🌸🦇

i just found an analysis—i.e. a brain-dump on the narrative patterns established in SF & on Nesta vs Elain’s romantic arcs—that i had scribbled down ages ago in an insomnia episode, and…

not to gas myself up but i ate that. Nothing revolutionary—basically what most of us have been saying—just funny to be validated by my old thoughts in a random notebook.

While Feyre/Nes are “two sides of the same coin,” Elain /Nes are character foils. Adjacent traumas, near opposite responses; similar upbringings in society, but regarded/treated/raised very differently…

… ACOSF directly contrasts and parallels Elain & Nesta’s romantic arcs through their mother’s expectations. (The roles they were raised to fulfill would be the roles they break away from.)

SJM cements that by introducing Eris as their mother’s ideal partner for Nesta: Nes ends up choosing against her mother’s wishes (power & conquest) => choosing against what she was groomed for.

So what of Elain?

“Groomed” to be a wife to a man of her mother’s choosing —> Given away to a mate of the Cauldron’s choosing.

Their union would be used to further her family’s social standing —> The elucien bond is openly regarded as what keeps Lucien loyal to the NC + political ramifications are highlighted in the bonus.

Their mother’s expectation of Elain is that she—the complacent, simple, unambitious doll to be married off—would marry for “love & beauty” (while her cunning Nesta would marry for conquest)…

That phrasing implies that she perceives these qualities—love & beauty—as superficial, unimportant, and secondary to her plans.

It also implies that Elain is expected to fall in love with the man that was chosen for her => Elain would not question/notice their machinations.

Analogously, Elain’s (apparent) disinterest for Lucien—the man who was chosen for her—is assumed to be temporary, rebellious: it’s expected that she will fall for him. Her voice is rendered secondary to fate’s plans => Her love is a given (mates are everything, after all), while her disinterest is positioned as an inconvenience.

Elain’s story will be about reclaiming that narrative.

Elain will marry ‘for love & beauty’… just not in the way that’s been expected of her: ‘love & beauty’ will outweigh other’s plans—fate will be a consequence of her love, rather than her love being a consequence of fate.
