Her Golden WonderBoy
My story on Wattpad, AO3 and Fanfiction.net. Inspired by Disney’s Hercules
*My dear lover glows with health... There's no one quite like him!
She, just a mere human from Earth, or "Terra", as her fellow alien friends referred to her home planet, had never foreseen herself falling in love with Adam Warlock, a creature with the body of a strong powerful superman of towering stature with the mind of a youthful boy, every inch of him golden from head to toe.
As she had watched him adjust to his standing as a Guardian of the Galaxy under Rocket Raccoon's leadership, he had begun to steal a small piece of her heart each day with their every interaction.
Ever since the notorious Snap where she had vanished into ash, missing five years of her life and miraculously been revived, she had been abandoned by a man who had promised to love her... who had moved on quickly with a younger and prettier woman in her involuntary absence of existence.
She had cried for months and months and vowed never to have her heart broken again by anyone.
Until she had gotten to know Adam...
My golden one, pure and untarnished...
Like a nervous teenage boy, he had been awkward and uncertain of interacting with a human woman, especially one he found attractive.
No... he thought she was beautiful.
From when he had first laid eyes on her on Knowhere, watching her feed the rapidly growing baby raccoons and other animals rescued from the High Evolutionary's possession, he had been undeniably smitten and everyone knew as much of his growing affection.
"Are you always this talkative?" One of the first things she had asked him, and there it all started.
At first, she had denied him any reciprocation, trying to ignore the accelerating beat of her heart and the spread of fire throughout her veins every time she looked into his eyes and saw nothing but the truth of his words, the sincerity in his innocent demeanor...
His eyes are like doves, soft and bright...brimming with meaning.
Adam was honest and sweet. She had known from their first conversation that he would never do anything to hurt her. Because he was literally not like any other man she had met before. She could tell him absolutely anything on her mind and he would be her ever patient confidante, despite not always understanding whenever she would use a certain figure of speech or speak of something he didn't know of, like a student still gaining his education.
And she in turn would teach him what she knew about her own world. The books she had read in school, social customs of humans in platonic and romantic relationships...
He wanted to know all the facts he could absorb about the universe, always asking her all the questions he could think of, no matter how obvious or unusual they sounded. He was a quick learner and she found herself wanting him to tell her everything else he knew since his premature birth.
She could have listened to him speak for hours. She wanted to talk and laugh with the golden Sovereign man who looked at her like nobody else had looked at her before. Like she didn't have to live up to anybody else's standards except her own...
His voice, his words, warm and reassuring...
Their first ever "date" had been when he walked with her back to her small apartment, more of a modest slum, their resident planet being the disembodied head of a giant Celestial god didn't guarantee the sturdiest real estate.
And she continued to feel safe around Adam, being escorted home at night after a long day, knowing he had to return home himself and tend to Blurp.
When she went to let herself into her home, front door open and she stepped over the threshold of the entryway, his large frame loomed over her... she held the palm of her hand to his chest, feeling the brush of his lips against her cheek in a chaste touch of displaying his fondness.
She felt his heartbeat quickening in his chest, her fingertips taking in the strength of his evident muscles beneath his jacket, his presence protective and encircling around her.
His torso is the work of a sculptor, hard and smooth as ivory.
Her hand had traveled up to his cheek as the branding of his lips upon her skin burned and tantalized and awakened something she had thought long dead within her soul.
She could feel him shivering with anxiety and he opened his mouth to apologize for acting so rash and inconsiderately, having learned about needing the consent to kiss the woman he had longed for. Her fingers brushed away a piece of hanging blond hair from his forehead, and a smile graced her lips as she stood on her tiptoes to kiss him herself.
And she heard no sensible voice in the back of her mind saying this was wrong. No alarm bells ringing in her conscience. Her walls were being let down, the shelter of his arms around her waist replacing them as the protective structure of her world.
His much taller form even allowed him to carefully lift her with little effort off her feet, her arms around his neck as their kiss deepened, her fingers playing with the finer hairs of his nape.
His words are kisses and his kisses words...
"Alright, break it up, you two. Your golden boy has a big day of saving people tomorrow, missy!" The gruff voice of Rocket Raccoon spoke up from the side of the hallway as he approached the Warlock and the ordinary human maiden. "Don't worry, he'll be back afterward. C'mon, kid. Let's get some rest."
The bandit furred mammal beckoned Adam to follow him as she dared to sneak one more kiss upon his lips. Before they finally separated for the evening, he exhaled a heavy sigh of overwhelming emotion, his hands briefly taking ahold of hers to place a goodnight kiss on her fingertips.
He whispered a bid of farewell to her and wished upon her the sweetest dreams, a wistful glaze in his yellow eyes and she couldn't help but smile at the vision of him so elated. He forced himself to turn away from her so he could follow Rocket, who half growled with a huff of impatience, but chuckled at seeing the lovestruck look on Adam's usually stoic and inquisitive features.
She closed the front door to her apartment behind her after Adam and Rocket were out of her sight, leaning against the wooden frame as her heart beat a million miles per minute and a wave of ecstatic dizziness almost made her collapse.
She would damn herself if she admitted it. And she wouldn't at least out loud.
Everything about Adam Warlock delighted and thrilled her, through every bone and vein and goose-bump of her flesh. The taste of him lingered on her lips, adoring and unsure and gentle; she could tell he hadn't kissed anyone before.
He was her golden champion borne of the cosmos, with hair and skin of sunshine and eyes of starlight, shimmering with all the beauty of the universe.
"Watch out, loverboy. Keep your goo-goo eyes focused ahead tomorrow and keep your head straight. Last thing you need is a pretty broad distracting you." Rocket advised, a hint of dread welling in the pit of his stomach.
Although deep down, he was happy Adam had found somebody, not wanting him to be isolated from love, but he felt like this wasn't going to end well.
He had seen the human Peter Quill's reaction to losing Gamora. His best friend who had not only watched his own mother die as a child, but had lost his own alien lover.
And like Quill, Adam had been powerless to save his own mother from an awful death.
Rocket couldn't bear to think of naïve, orphaned Adam in the same position and he hoped the golden boy in a man's body wasn't headed down the same path of tragedy...
Not like he himself had endured with losing Teefs and Floor... and his beloved Lylla.
.
.
"Adam, look out!" Her voice crying his name pierced the air and her petite body somehow pushed him off to the side and he tumbled to the ground.
"Nooooo!" He shouts her name, his eyes denying the horrifying sight before him.
Her lifeless body laid on the ground, blood seeping from her abdomen spreading into a darkening crimson stain on her shirt.
He hadn't even noticed the weapon aimed at him from one of the High Evolutionary's loyalist soldiers, and she had pushed him out of the laser's path to take the blow herself.
Drax and Nebula had the culprit taken away for punishment, but Adam could've cared less in the moment. Taking her into his arms ever so delicately, he cradled her as carefully as possible to his chest and carried her to the medical bay.
He noticed her normally fair skin had paled into a ghostly white, her eyelids closed and her head slumped limply over his arm despite his effort to keep her secured against his shoulder.
The distressed alien-man gingerly laid her on the surgery platform and he vaguely heard Rocket's following him and the raccoon rummaging through the cabinets before grabbing a Med-Pack.
As the Guardians' captain fixes the tool over her wound, Adam knelt at her side, his hand sliding underneath her head to hold her up slightly as she weakly fluttered her eyes open, groaning with pain and wincing with gritted teeth.
"Why...why did you—you didn't have to..." He could hardly form the question he wanted to ask her as she managed to meet his eyes and he could tell she struggled to keep her own eyelids open.
His free hand held hers and she squeezed his palm with all her withering strength. She inhaled a shaking breath to answer him. "People always do crazy things...when they're in love, Adam."
He found himself speechless at her confession to him, knowing how many barriers she had placed between herself and other people who had tried to get close.
Rocket fixed an oxygen mask over her mouth and nose, and mist fogged the clear plastic as she spoke weakly. She had found the opportunity to repeat the quote she had said to him in one of their first encounters. "Are you... always this talkative, Warlock?"
He heard the quivering in her voice as he chuckled down at her moment of humor with tears forming in his eyes at seeing her lovely face grimace with an even more pained wince. She closed her eyes again, pressing her pink lips in a thin line.
Both of his hands gently placed her back onto the pillows, making sure her head and neck were comfortably supported, not that it would do anything to heal her. He opened his mouth, his numbing tongue unable to form words in seeing her in such mortally injured condition.
Adam wanted to tell her that he loved her from the second he first beheld her. To tell her everything would be alright and that he would take a million laser blasts in succession if it meant she would never experience pain for the rest of her days.
But no words came out. He bent down towards her face and kissed her forehead beaded with sweat, careful not to press any of his weight on her.
"I'll watch over her, kid. You oughta go deal with that bastard responsible." Rocket's voice was softer than usual, expressing his paternal side as a leader and caretaker of Adam.
The muscled golden superman wanted to tell off Rocket and blast everything in the room, but he knew he was above such juvenile behavior.
For those he cared for most, for her... he would be better. He silently nodded in reluctant acceptance of Rocket's order, finding the voice to whisper words of comfort to her, that he would return soon and guard her while she recovered.
"You'll be alright, my darling. I promise." He kissed her brow once more as her eyes stayed shut and he didn't miss the hitch in her breathing as her lungs begin to resist the oxygen in her body.
She didn't open her eyes again after Adam left the med bay and Rocket remained beside her, his small paws holding her pale hand in their grip with all the tenderness he could muster, mindful not to allow his claws to scratch her skin.
The raccoon wasn't sure how much time had passed in waiting for a change with her wound. Minutes... hours... days...
She winced with every effort of breath in her failing lungs and Rocket knew her time was running out.
Her temperature cooled down dangerously from her natural human warmth... and Rocket made the call on his communication device to Adam with urgency.
She was dying... the med-pack couldn't save her.
Adam flew with everything he possessed in his body to make it back to her. Even faster than he had flown on Counter-Earth to save his mother, when he had been too late...
He couldn't repeat that mistake again.
A primal scream of rage and desperation erupted from his throat as he came into sight of the med bay, slowing himself down so he wouldn't damage the building as he panted her name.
She had to be alive still... Rocket wouldn't tell him something as horrible as being unable to save the woman he loved.
Every step he took felt heavy as a hundred-pound weight as he walked into the bay entrance and went around the corner into the surgery chamber. He set his vigilant eyes first on Rocket, who blocked his sight of the human girl who had stolen his heart, the raccoon's ebony eyes shining with unshed tears as the Terran-born animal shook his head at him in silent despair.
He saw Rocket holding her hand, limp and useless at her wrist as he laid it gently onto her chest.
Rocket jumped down from the platform, allowing Adam to take in the devastating and morbid sight before him.
In all the carnage and destruction Adam had seen in his admittedly short lifespan, none of those instances held a candle to what he was seeing now. There was no longer any color, music or beauty in his world anymore...
There she lie still on the platform, her once flushed and lovely skin a pallor of ashen grey, her voluminous hair dulled and tangled around her head. Her features set into a resting expression of the torturous agony she had endured as her heart ceased beating and her blood congealed.
Adam took her into his trembling arms, barely able to enunciate her name as approaching sobs overwhelmed his dignified voice. Her head and neck sagged backward like a lifeless doll, her body frigid with the cold of death and inevitable rigor mortis. One of his hands held her head to his chest, her icy cheek pressed above his heartbeat.
The tears flowed from his eyes... and anguishing hurt spread like a plague through his chest, more so than any wound he had experienced from his enemies. His own heart could have been torn from his ribcage and it wouldn't compare to the pain he felt while holding her deceased body in his arms.
That laser blast couldn't have done any worse to him.
"No...No..." Adam, the great and indestructible protector of the Sovereign moaned that one word over and over again. He looked to Rocket through blurred vision, still cradling his Terran beloved close to his torso. "Captain, please wake me up. Tell me this is nothing but a nightmare of my worst fears."
Rocket himself wiped his own eyes of his tears, not caring about anything in the moment except that his friend and someone he considered a son to him was in indescribable mourning. He leapt onto the platform and stood by her feet, careful not to touch her should Adam be set off in his emotional state. "Kid, I'm so sorry. This ain't a bad dream. Death is as real as anything. There are some things that can never change."
Adam's fingers stroked her long hair, her once silken tresses stiff like yellow straw. Remembering the fairytales she had told him about reading as a child, he dared to brush his lips against her frozen mouth, his heart shattering at her unresponsive and still. This was no fairytale and he was certainly no heroic prince able to save his true love with a kiss.
She had shared with him her culture as a human from Earth, and expanded his mind with the kinds of books she loved and the music she listened to. And her wonderful dancing whenever songs from Quill's Zune would play on the loudspeakers... She was so magnificent and precious to him.
He laid her tenderly back upon the pillow, her head turning onto one side with her cheek against the pillowcase, making sure her hands laid comfortably on her lap. Adam sank onto his knees upon the floor and buried his face in his arms in the manner of a despairing little boy, consumed with grief and guilt, allowing his sobs to release and he muttered to himself, the words muffled. "This wasn't supposed to happen."
She had sacrificed herself out of love for him and he didn't have the courage to speak of his love aloud to her. And now she was gone.
Then, the stone in the center of his forehead began to glow as his inconsolable despondency transformed into a foreign rage, his head raising up from his arms and his sadness ebbed into a spurning fury as Rocket's words rang in his mind and he turned to look at his adopted animal father figure. "You helped bring trillions of beings back to life from Thanos' snap. If you can salvage that amount of souls, I can bring back just one to reclaim her from damnation."
A scorching fire burned Adam's retinas as he stood from his kneeling at her bedside and he turned to face at Rocket, who almost leapt out his fur at the sight of his protégé and adopted son. Adam Warlock's eyes glowed a haunting white, the pupils and irises no longer visible. Rocket dared to attempt in talking him down, knowing he risked being at the end of the enraged Sovereign's wrath.
"Kid, there's a difference between snapping vanished people back into existence and bringing someone back from the dead. What I did back on Earth was a crazy cosmic miracle... what you wanna do is impossible. It's suicide and there's no coming back once you go there." Rocket warned him, terrified of losing somebody else he loved and cared about like family.
Adam marched toward the door, pausing just before the entryway. He turns toward Rocket, who perched vigilantly at his human love's side. Without asking, he had faith that his honorary paternal figure would ensure nothing happened to her body in his absence. "Then so be it. As long as she lives again."
With a supersonic blast of light and a crashing boom in the blink of an eye, Adam soared out of the room, the turbulence of his flight roaring like the engine of a fighter jet.
He would recover his beloved, no matter the cost to his own wellbeing.
.
.
The stone in his head guided him to the Realm of Death, known in human mythology as the Underworld. He had heard folklore about it from the residents of other planets while on missions.
While the place overall failed to frighten him, he couldn't deny that it was almost too easy to find exactly what he was looking for. No gloating overlord to taunt him about his reason for being there, no guards to battle that stood in his way.
Everywhere was dark and silent except for a wailing noise of foreboding leading him to a creeping green glow and as he stood on the precipice of a huge cliff, Adam found himself looking down into the River of Souls.
Only it was more of a slowly swirling whirlpool of dozens of hundreds of millions of helpless souls, doomed for an eternity of misery and solitude. From above, Adam scanned over the numerous souls floating in the green circle, looking for any sign of her.
Just the thought of her essence floating in this macabre and repulsive place made him sick to his stomach. But he had to focus on rescuing her.
This was only one chance he had, something nobody had ever tried before, only in myths and legends.
And there was the possibility of him dying in the process. But he had to try, no matter how frightening or painful it would be.
To bring her back to life, he would drown repeatedly in this whirlpool of death, over and over...
He stood at the edge, inhaling a deep breath as he braced himself to make the jump into the river. He spread his arms and leapt off the precipice, diving headfirst with the agility of a professional swimmer into the swirling pool.
The stone in his head glowed, helping finally spot her amongst the other souls. She was floating away from his reach, pulled into the current whirling away as he urged himself to swim faster.
She floated in a horizontal position on her back, her translucent hair flowing around her head like a luminescent halo, her eyes sealed closed and her lips formed in an unconscious frown. Her hands floated up towards him as he swam closer, almost taunting him to keep trying to save her.
Adam had no trouble holding his breath for prolonged periods of time, but as he kept swimming with all the power of his legs and arms, he noticed the wrinkles begin to form along his golden skin, the bones growing weary with the adrenaline slowly seeping from his veins.
Dare he believe his heart began beating slower?
No! He couldn't fail yet! He had to free her, get her out of this dreaded dominion of death.
She was getting closer now... and his golden skin became more wrinkled and faded into the bronze of an aged coin, his bones creaking at the joints.
He opened his mouth in a soundless wail of her name as he made one more reach for her, his weakened skeletal arms making one final effort with his last ounce of strength.
As his vision threatened to blacken with dots, his fingers grabbed onto her wrist.
He yanked her close, his arm tightened around her as he emerged from the pool and climbed back up the cliff, the beat of his heart steadying into a regular healthy rhythm, the density of his bones and muscles thickening to accommodate his frame and his smoothened skin once again alight with godlike golden radiance, his youth restored to him.
And with his angel's beautiful soul safely cradled in his arms, Adam ascended from the literal depths of Hell to bring her home where she belonged.
.
.
Back on Knowhere, everyone stopped in their tracks to look up at the sky, into the upper atmosphere.
A loud echoing boom rumbled like an earthquake as the golden glowing object made its way closer to the ground at a fast fall like a plummeting meteor.
Before anyone could start panicking, they saw the object slow its approach to the ground, slower and slower until they recognized who it was.
Adam Warlock carefully floated down, allowing himself to land without losing his grip on what he bore in his hold. A somber silence wove throughout everybody, even Groot and Drax, as they all watched the glowing golden man carrying the transparent spirit of a human woman, pronounced dead just hours ago.
Not a word was uttered as they made a path for Adam to walk undisturbed to the medical bay, his eyes free of the sinister white light of rage, all the hardened residents of the Guardians headquarters moved to tears at the way he carried her, his arms cradling her legs and her back with utmost care, and her head upon his shoulder to display to everyone without words what this fragilely mortal creature from Earth meant to him.
He barely spared them a glance, only looking either straight ahead or to the side down at her stoically resting face as unconscious slumber possessed even her soul.
Rocket looked up at the sound of footsteps, still not having left her side as he took in the astonishing sight before him. He had cleaned her up as best as he could, wiping away the blood that had leaked out of her... to prepare her for a burial.
There stood his adoptive son, a divine glow from him as he entered the room with the soul of his love in his arms. Neither raccoon nor alien said a word to each other as Rocket stepped down from the platform, watching as Adam ever so gently walked toward where her body laid still, her wound sewn up and her body dressed in clean clothes courtesy of Nebula.
He kneeled down toward her, lowering his arms to allow her soul to reunite with her body. The blue spirit was absorbed into the lifeless flesh and blood human girl.
Rocket held his breath, clenching his paws together as he watched Adam place himself down on his knees and took hold of her hand in both of his.
They both waited several seconds for any signals of life from her.
This had to work... Adam kissed her knuckles, each prolonging second adding up more and more like a ticking clock.
He felt the tingle of warmth in her hand, spreading to her fingers and down to her wrist, then her arms.
The blushing pink of her cheeks reddened as the paled grey of her face disappeared and her nostrils began to flair with a small intake of air. Her hair regained its luscious shine of brilliance...
And her plump lips opened as she inhaled a deep gasp of oxygen, breathing it in fully into her welcoming lungs.
Adam choked back a relieved sob, holding his own breath for what he was yearning to witness. Her lashes fluttered as her eyelids twitched. And they finally opened, instantly meeting his own eyes to the alien man's delight.
She smiled up at him, tears of blissful disbelief welling in her eyes. "My wonder-boy. What... how?"
Noticing she was trying to sit up, Adam placed his forearm underneath her back to support her, watching her face for any signs of disorientation. Noting that she seemed lucid, he obliged in answering her.
"I've been told people do mad things when they're in love." He repeated her words from hours ago in his own way with his English accent more endearing to her than ever.
Grateful tears flowed down her cheeks and Adam gently wiped them away with his thumbs. His head bent down toward her again, his lips aiming for hers and she gladly awaited his kiss.
Alas, they were interrupted again. "Hey, Sleeping Beauty, don't I get some acknowledgement here?"
Rocket good-naturedly jabbed at her with the dark humor and they both chuckled in response at the raccoon as he jumped back up to the platform to greet his newly revived comrade. She scratched behind his ear, knowing he found it comforting, and placed a thankful kiss on his muzzle which he immediately wiped away in mock disgust.
"Yuck, why don't you save all that for your hero, hon? He's the one that literally saved your soul." Rocket proceeded to shoo them out of the room so he could tidy up lest there be another emergency. When he looked back at them, they were locked in an embrace and he couldn't help but smile in fondness at them and reminisce to himself about the future he almost had with a certain sea otter.
After pulling away from their hug, Adam scooped her up into his arms and though she protested being carried, knowing he most likely wouldn't let her walk for the remainder of the day... and she was admittedly fine with that.
Sharing another passionate kiss with her, Adam walked out of the med-bay with her alive and healed in his arms, and shot up into the air with a tight grip of his hands holding her secure and safe, as she nuzzled into his neck, reveling in the strength of her Wonderboy.
Both of them had become each other's heroes, encountering death to save one another...
Rocket watched them go up with a bittersweet smile on his face and a tear down his furry cheek.
Like he and his much missed friends had dreamt of all those years ago, he knew Adam Warlock and his human mate would fly away together, into the forever and beautiful sky.
