just finished reading through your essay in your pinned post and it. made me rethink this relationship i had been absolutely torturing myself over for years?? i’ve largely been the only brown person in white lgbt spaces and it didn’t even really occur to me that my white ex girlfriend was saying i took advantage of her because she was being racist. that’s. fucking crazy. i literally assumed i must have dissociated and therefore blocked out assaulting her but no!! she was lying!!!!! that’s crazy!!!! white people are SO insane god why would you ever lie about something like that

anyway thank you for posting all of that. white people are so crazy it’s So nice to have other people of colour (even though we literally just became mutuals ehehe. but still, i genuinely really appreciate it)

I think the thing it can take some BIPOC ages to learn or remember when shit hits the fan is that when it comes to preserving white supremacy and their position within it, every white (especially US whites) who hasn’t done sufficient and real work to establish antiracism as a core facet of their being and interactions will consciously or unconsciously lie like they fucking breathe immediately.

And because in most contexts a BIPOC person will not have the same systemic motivation to preserve their status within white supremacy *because* white supremacy views us as permanently tainted/unsalvagable (ones who do are often outliers hoping to better their position via sacrificing their kindred), we do not always immediately remember three cardinal truths of whiteness/white supremacy:

1. The worst white is viewed as inarguably better than the best non-white within white supremacist societies, and the abolition of whiteness is often viewed by whiteness with fear that without the shackles of white supremacy on them, they’ll rise above, and therefore lower the worth of, any “lesser” whites. As such, marginalized whites often still engage in white solidarity and oppression maintenance even though it actively harms them as well, because regardless of what they *say*, their actions show they see the alternative of a racial liberation and white abolishment as a lessening rather than a communal freeing.

2. Whites will lie far beyond what’s reasonable to maintain 1, as once they commit they become afraid of the consequences of reneging OR the risk of revenge should they fail. To them, there is no surrender, just their own destruction because if caught holding up these terms of white supremacy using falsehoods, they lose access to that as a tool unless they leave completely to a new community; and that lessened usefulness to other whites is a lessening of them intrinsically as well.

3. Whites will almost always be willing to betray any other ideological belief to maintain the superstructure of white supremacy. They can say kill nazis, but refuse to dismantle the bones of it in their own communities and will fight against any non-white that tries. When we describe an ideology as White - White Feminism, White Anarchy, White Veganism - this is what we mean.

And as such they will do literally anything to uphold whiteness when the chips are down, even if they know it’s a lost cause - they have to maintain the masquerade of whiteness. If they’re “an imperfect victim” in some way rather than a known liar, they still have a level of power to leverage their whiteness.

I’m sorry you were gaslighted into believing you became some kind of mindless monster. You deserved better. PLEASE remember to always double check anything potentially sus a cracker fucking says beyond them, I’m sorry.

Reader, if you white, you must actively decide to betray whiteness and white supremacy, to address and work against it when told you’re perpetrating it, to stop valuing your limited position over your BIPOC Comrades, or you’ll never get free either.

So I recently found a detailed study called Access Denied from 2015, a couple years before I moved to DC, that has statistics on the trans community here broken down by gender identity and race, among other things. The info is. Stark. especially from a transfeminist point of view. Moreso, it illustrates the racial divides in the trans community and why trans liberation CANNOT be separate from racial liberation and liberation from white supremacy.

For context, DC is about half Black demographically, and has one of the largest queer, and especially trans, percentages for a state in the country with 14.3% identifying as lgbtq. While there are regional differences of course, this is a very large survey by trans research standards with over 500 respondents.

I’ll include most info below the cut bc this’ll already be a longer post, but I want to put one specific section and some tables above it:

9. Assault and Violence

-Experience of assault is most commonly reported among TWOC.

-Out of responding trans people, 74% had been verbally assaulted, 42% physically assaulted, and 35% sexually assaulted.

-57% and 47% of transfemmes had been physically or sexually assaulted, compared to 17% and 14% of transmascs.

-Racially, 54/47% of Black and 60/56% of Hispanic trans people had been physically or sexually assaulted, vs. 14% of whites.

—Among Black trans people, 62% of transfemmes had been assaulted, vs. 14% of transmascs.

—Among Hispanic trans people, 70% of transfemmes had been assaulted, vs. 27% of transmascs.

1. Education

-66% of white trans people in DC have an associates degree or higher, compared to 14% of Black and Hispanic trans people.

-16% of trans people with an associates degree are unemployed, compared to 47% of trans people who don’t have a degree.

-trans people with a bachelor’s degree are five times as likely to be unemployed as cis people with one.

-transmascs are 3x as likely to have received a degree beyond high school compared to transfemmes

—of the trans individuals with degrees, 71% are transmasc and 29% are transfemme

2. Economics and Income

-46% of trans people in Washington DC make less than $10,000 a year, compared to 11% of DC residents.

—57% of trans people of color, especially trans women of color, make less than $10,000 a year.

-36% of trans people in DC are unemployed, with Black trans people having a rate of 55%.

-Trans people working in the underground/grey economy report higher rates of physical assault for being trans, at 49%

-40% of trans people report not being hired for a job at least once due to being perceived as trans. Notably, 49% of TPOC vs. 30% of whites.

-Half of employed trans people reported workplace harassment, and a quarter were forced to use inappropriate restrooms or present incorrectly.

-21% of TPOC reported physical or sexual assault in the workplace, compared to 6% of whites.

5. Housing and Homelessness

-20% of trans people in Washington DC are homeless, and currently homeless trans people were more likely to be HIV positive as well (43%) compared to housed ones (16%)

-74% of Black transfemmes were actively experiencing hardship and 28% were currently homeless, compared to 29% and 6% of transmascs.

-27% of homeless trans people reported having sex with people to live with them, and 70% had been denied a lease in the past.

-Half of undocumented trans people are currently homeless. (Note: this is before red states began bussing migrants/undocumented people to DC. This number is likely higher now)

—58% of undocumented homeless trans people were denied a lease, compared to 19% of documented.

-25% of homeless trans people have been physically or sexually assaulted by police, and 41% by shelter staff.

-Black (30%) and Hispanic (33%) trans people were three times more likely to be denied a lease than white (9%) trans people.

6. Sexual Orientation and LGBTQ Service experiences

-25% of respondents identified as Queer, the highest rate of any option.

-Straight/Heterosexual was the second highest response, at 20%.

-Half of all trans people report negative experiences with lgbtq orgs, with 40% having been told the organization was explicitly unwelcoming to trans people/issues. Only 32% reported an lgbtq org was both willing and able to address trans issues.

7. History of Sex Work

-35.7% of respondents have engaged in sex work, with transfemmes and TPOC being much more likely to have. Half of transfemmes have engaged in sex work compared to 10% of transmascs, and over half of TPOC had compared to whites (12%).

8. HIV Status and Health

-20% of respondents were HIV Positive, with one third of all transfemme respondents being positive, and 75% of HIV positive responses being TPOC. 90% of HIV Positive respondents were transfemmes, and 5% were transmascs.

-65% of respondents had received some form of HRT or procedures for transitioning, and another 23% plan to do so in the future. This makes the rate of medical transition among trans people around 88%.

—30% had used some kind of unlicensed care/source (this would include DIY and community sourcing/mutual aid of prescription HRT)

-Those who identify as having “poor to fair” health were much more likely to be uninsured or HIV Positive.

-60% of trans folks were uninsured or insured through public or family-contingent insurance. 20% are completely uninsured.

-19% of trans people in Washington DC have reported being denied access to healthcare due to being trans. (Note: this is likely lower than nationally due to higher general trans competence in DC)

-26% of respondents get their syringes through informal sources.

-60% of trans people had considered suicide, 34% had attempted, and 10% had in the 12 months prior. Among those who had attempted, 61% and 54% had been physically or sexually assaulted.
