the thing is, even if dolores was truly acting like humbert's idea if 'lolita', it would still be humbert's fault. i hear this thing a lot when people discuss child abuse; 'well the CHILD showed interest in the ADULT first,' children are emotionally immature and their brain isn't fully develop to understand the complexity of relationships, especially adult one, and even if the child is affectionate or 'flirtatious', then the responsibility falls on the adult who has the power and maturity, not the child who has barely developed brain. i'm not saying that dolores 'invited' the abuse (nothing she did was an invitation for abuse) but i often hear people dismiss the child's pain when when they don't fall into the image of the 'perfect victim'

You are absolutely right and I would argue Dolores ISN'T a perfect victim and that's another strength of the novel. She isn't a virgin, she does have a crush on Humbert and even though he was manipulating her and goading her she did initiate the encounter on some level.

As far as my interpretation goes he pushed her to explain her sexual experiences with other kids at camp and then feigned ignorance so she would offer to "explain" and "demonstrate" what they did on him. And she did because as far as she was concerned she was showing him a fun game they played at camp and getting a chance to show she knows something he doesn't (making her feel in control!). But she did initiate that physical interaction to some degree to a point where he felt exonerated to then take it further. It's just as you said whatever level of initiative she showed doesn't matter in the slightest because it's still rape (and obviously MUCH more clearly so with the background knowledge we have and the way he was coercing her).

Interestingly I feel like in some cases it's precisely the refusal to grant children sexual agency that leads to this kind of victim blaming. Now, excluding kids who act hypersexual as a result of prior abuse (because that's obviously not normal and healthy) children (and more so preteens and definitely teens) have some degree of sexual curiosity. Not to the same levels and not all are aware of it really but they do and they want to explore it. Children experimenting with masturbation, exploring those impulses with other kids and having crushes, fantasies and desires about unattainable (and therefore "safe") adult figures like celebrities, teachers, coaches, youth pastors and whatnot is NORMAL. Children also mimic what adults around them do and want to be like those adults and because We Live In A Society that includes highly sexualized photoshoots, social media posts and music videos (and don't think I'm advocating for censorship here, the bible has sex too) as well as the normal sexual behaviour of adults around them (and I do mean genuinely the most lowkey things like simply dressing up for date night, mum giving dad a kiss before leaving for work, etc). I don't even think a 10 year old dressing up as sexy Sabrina Carpenter and posing sticking their butt out is a bad thing. I did that as a kid and it didn't damage me but I did it playing "model" with other kids taking photos with a little camera that never went anywhere except a box I still laugh tears at when I see them now because obviously we looked goofy as hell because we had no concept of "sexy". beyond "women wearing short clothes sort of twisting around". My baby cousins did it too and I took their picture and hyped up them dancing to Lady Gaga at 8 even though at that point I knew they looked goofy but they were just having fun!

And thats the thing, what kids need is a safe framework to deal with those desires and ideas. They need safe adults to teach them their body and their desires aren't shameful or immoral. Masturbation is normal, exploring by smashing barbies together, dancing "sexy" at home in front of the mirror or experimenting with others their age is normal within reason (and how to be safe). Putting on mums lipstick and your older sisters lacy top to be sexy (a word you cannot actually conceptualise yet even if you think you do but you hear it a lot) is fine as long as it doesn't end up on tiktok and they need those safe adults to make sure they aren't taken advantage of in this confusing exploration by adults.

But the (especially American!!!!) refusal to acknowledge kids emergent sexualities and genuinely innocent curiosity about this aspect they do Know exists in adult lives but don't really understand leads to then harshly demonising the child when an adult takes advantage of them because they see an opportunity in the childs curiosity and desire to explore. Because that's what it is, a vulnerability that predators take advantage of.

Children are curious about everything, that's their whole deal! It doesn't justify abusing that curiosity to get the child to do things YOU as the adult know to be harmful to them.

I know this is a weak metaphor but I'm on the go so let me try to make my point here: A child has seen on TV that when Tom electrocutes Jerry it made bzzt and the hair stood up funny. They have heard adults say electricity is dangerous but Sadie dared them to touch the horse fence once and it only prickled and felt funny and rubbing birthday balloons on Joeys hair made it stand up and his mum said that was also electricity so it can't be all bad. If an adult notices the child poking at an electrical socket now and encourages them to stick a fork in there and that kid gets electrocuted who is at fault here?? The child for being curious and wanting to learn about something they don't understand that's present on the fringe of their life? Or the adult who pushed them into this behaviour and quite possibly the guardian who failed to safeguard the child?

Even the most unrealistically sexual and manipulative interpretation of Lolita, the movie versions or the one in Los diary don't deserve to be sexually abused. NO child does. I don't care if they're posting thirst traps on IG because they want to be grown up, running a daddy kink blog hitting on their teacher the way they saw in a movie or putting their hand on your dick you direct that kid to a sex ed book and you gently tell them no fucking way. PERIOD!

Do you guys think about how Dolores like many victims of CSA probably experienced suicidal ideation but couldn't give it any real thought because even in death she had no one else to go to. Do you guys think about that

Since I've had some clown in my mentions claiming Nabokovs intent was to present Dolores as equally culpable echoing the good old "but what about her TEEN SEDUCTRESS powers to CONTROL MEN" let's collect some of what Vladimir "Strong Opinions" Nabokov said about the book and Dolly in particular:

"Some simply haven’t read the book or don’t understand it. It is not obscene; it has none of the dirt of many so-called realistic modern novels. “Most critics have failed to stress the pathetic side,” said Mrs. Nabokov. “It’s really a tragic story. I FINALLY decided to get these finished and posted, I mainly just held back cause I wanted to fix the poly count on the hooks I was using!
