Emo Vs. the mainstream
Welcome to Emo Tim, Emo Tom is a 10th-grade culture project on the confusing world of emo culture. I was instructed by my teacher to choose a topic of interest to me, but I really couldn’t think of much to research. During the process of this project, I had little to no idea what kind of culture I wanted to explore (Rap, Fashion, Gamer, etc.) but as I sat in thought I was reminded of the cringy days of middle school. The black dyed hair, skinny jeans, and BVB I chose to indulge myself in the world of “ Emo Culture”. In this project, I will interview peoples of the culture, answer the questions of the mainstream media, help others and myself to understand and explore the culture as a whole.

What is emo?
What is Emo?: Emo; noun; a style of rock music resembling punk but having more complex arrangements and lyrics that deal with more emotional subjects.
Emo; adjective; denoting or associating to emo and its associated subculture
As stated in Eugenia Cooney's “ 7 ways to tell if your emo” video. You are emo if you can check off the seven things on her list.
-Love Gerard way
-Loving the color black
- Finding Jack skellington attractive
Are just a few examples. What it means to be emo is different for every person who associates with the culture, whether you're in it for the clothes, makeup, and hair, or the music, I've gotten different descriptions from every person I've asked. As an outsider looking in, I always assumed people who identified with the emo culture we’re just people seeking attention and like to wear black, but I was proved wrong by my interview with ex-emo, Mars. During my interview with Mars, I asked a series of questions to get a better understanding of what it means to be emo.“ How would you describe emo in three words or less?”
“ Black, Music, rebellion” (Mars Proser)

How is emo expressed?
How is emo expressed?: Bands like Black Veil Brides, My chemical romance, and jimmy eat world, are all bands that fall under the category of emo. Music if the language which is common upon other cultures, socialization is another way the emo culture is expressed. “ I had internet friends most of the time…” according to Mars, it is common for emos to make friends over the internet over online chat rooms talking about favorite bands and whatever else they saw fit.

Chatrooms like soemo.co.uk can be used to communicate with people who enjoy the same things as you.
