in the gentle sways to snow patrol’s chasing cars on the balcony

in the shiba stuffed toy you won from that claw machine almost a thousand times after trying.

and for a moment, you granted my wish-

in the soft smiles as we bump into each other in the hallways every morning before class.

in the books you carry for me up the 20 floors of my apartment every after uni.

in the chicken nuggets you feed me as i hastily type down my essay before the deadline.

in the hair you keep away from my face as i fry the pancake batter we made the morning before.

for a moment, you became my happiness-

and i took utmost pride in that, boasting to even strangers on the street with flashy golden rings and dazzling silver lockets that were as fake as the text messages you’d send me each night.

and i breathed your air every single night even when it went from sweet honey to stinging alcohol and it became so thick and black that i could no longer breathe.

and i went from wondering what our next date would be to when i could escape from this hell of a dinner.

and from being my home, you suddenly became a cage and chained my wings to let me know that i was yours and yours only.

but i stayed, stayed because you were my happiness, still are, forever will be

and it wasn’t until my sister came up to me and gave me the key to the chains that i realized that no, that wasn’t happiness, and you weren’t, aren’t, shouldn’t, and most importantly, don’t deserve to be my happiness.
