Spoonie Witchcraft: Practicing Magic with a Chronic Illness
Now, I know that several really well know bloggers have done posts on Spoonie Witchcraft, but I wanted to do my own just to kind of interject my own personal experiences and my ideas/spells and such.
The Spoon Theory//

Who is a Spoonie?
A Spoonie is someone who has a chronic illness that interferes with their ability to function on a day to day level. Those of us with chronic illnesses, mental or physical, oftentimes do not have the energy to perform magical spells or rituals. An example of people who may identify as Spoonies are those with neurodivergencies (Ex. Autism, Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, DID, BPD, etc) and those with chronic physical illnesses (Ex. Autism, Fibromyalgia, Hypothyroidism, Endometriosis, Cancer, Chronic Fatique Syndrome, Crohns, etc).
Spoon Levels//
Critical: One to no spoons. No energy to do anything. Can barely get out of bed.
Low: Two or three spoons. Can do basic daily tasks such as showering and getting dressed but anything else is a desperate struggle. This is where I live most of the time.
Average: Four spoons. Doing fine, energy levels are tolerable. Can accomplish daily tasks with less difficulty.
Lots of Spooons!: Spoon levels at maximum! Completing big tasks such as work, doctors visits, phone calls, paying bills and such comes easily. I can’t even remember the last time I had max spoons lmao.
Spoon Levels and Magic//
Critical: No magic today. Use what little spoons you have to eat food and drink water.
Daydream. Dreaming in general has a lot of power and needs little to no input on your part.
Drink herbal tea or water to cleanse yourself.
Low: Little things, such as maybe drawing a sigil or speaking a phrase to cast a spell. (words have power, after all)
Draw sigils that have already been created. The act of drawing them itself is how it can be activated.
Write something in Tengwar to cast a spell.
Speak aloud a spell using Dovahzuhl.
Use crystals to charge and cleanse areas, objects and yourself as they have their own energy.
Read Magic Books
Average: Can practice basic energy work and complete more complex spells such as storm summonings or enchantments.
Learn or Practice Rune Casting
Learn or Practice Tarot Reading
Explore Hedgecraft: The Art of Astral Work
Explore Intrinsic Magic: The Art of Energy Manipulation
Explore Divination: The Art of Fortune-Telling
Learn about how Magic and Neurodivergencies can coexist.
Try out some of these ideas to combine Stimming and Magic!
Lots!: Big rituals can be completed, and its probably a good idea to stockpile and get a lot done while you have the energy. Create a bunch of sigils and enchant a bunch of items that can easily be used with an activation word or trigger for when you are low on spoons.
Create Sigils
Write Spells
Explore New Sects of the Craft
Educate Yourself on Cultural Appropriation
Resistance Witchcraft: Use Your Craft to Make a Change
Disney inspired spells

Low Effort Magic 🌙
I have a hard time doing something that involves magic every day, even though I've been on this path for quite some time.
Practicing magic a lot is by no means mandatory but it does help (in my opinion) to get better at it and it just helps with everyday problems. So here are some low effort activities you can do everyday that will hopefully help those of you with similar problems!
Write words like "protection", "healing" or whatever you want into your drink with a straw or spoon before you drink it. Or draw sigils in it.
If you feel super exhausted for no apparent reason, open a window and scream or, if you like it, put on some angry punk or metal music to banish whatever is feeding on your energy. While you're doing that, keep in mind that you want to banish. Otherwise you're just playing angry music. Yelling "Fuck off" also does the trick.
When you eat or drink something, try to pinpoint at least one magical property of each ingredient in your drink/food. It can also be one that has no historical evidence but is personal to you. That will help keep you in the magic mindset and also helps you to get all if that info into your long-term memory.
Open the window, stand in front of it and breathe in the air deeply with your eyes closed while you remind yourself that tge wind is part of nature and that you're connected to it. It doesn't have to be a half hour meditation, 5 seconds get the job done as well.
Offer everyday activities to your deities. For example: cooking for Hestia, standing up for yourself for Loki, practicing magic or **self care time** for Freyja, disposing of trash the correct way to your local nature spirits, etc
Take a shower or a bath, or just wash your face or brush your teeth with the intent of cleansing yourself from all that negative energy that has built up over the day.
That's all for this time. If you like it I'll do another one. :)

Video Game Magick
Video Games are something which I’ve been incorporating into my magickal practice for a while now, kinda even before I knew that’s what I was doing (like most of my magickal experience, really). So, I figured I’d give some insight into how I use video games in magick and witchcraft and maybe some others will find this helpful.
Why video games? - Why not? Hear me out. Video games, particularly certain genres, can be excellent tools to reach a “no-mind” gnosis state. I like to use fighting games at low difficulties, platforming games, easy shooters like Destiny 2, phone games, etc. Basically just lose yourself in the game. As you do, you will enter a meditative flow state, and this is ideal for magickal procedures.
Magickal Systems - Certain games even have magical systems in the game, and you can use those systems for inspiration on your own magical systems. Create enchantments based on spells in fantasy games, imagine your shields as the kind of rechargeable energy shields many games have these days, starting with Halo.
Sympathetic Magick - Sympathetic magick can be used. Set your intent that the character you make/play as in the game is you, and as the character gains/deals damage, you charge energy in yourself. You could even consider concepts such as sacrificial magick (virtual life-forms being used), or doing rituals in game, using your character. Games like Skyrim are all about magic, and let you create potions, spells, and sacrifice monsters. Imagine every experience point being a quanta of energy, a bit of information, that transfers from “you” in the game, to you in real life.
Sigil Magick - For sigil magick, I often like real-time strategy games, where I can draw sigils using buildings and resources in the game, design maps as sigils to upload that others can play on, and charge for you. Any game can be used though. You can consider your character, or a symbol you might be able to choose on one of their pieces of armor, capes, or accessories, or even the design of the character themselves, as a sigil. Load up an online game, and you don’t even have to play the game “good”. Every time you die, the sigil is destroyed, charging it each time. Shutting the game off after absorbing experience points would be activating the sigil.
Low-Energy/Disability/Illness - If you have low-energy/low or no mobility/disability/difficulty leaving your room, are bedridden, etc you can do a lot with video game magick. Perform rituals using your characters. Many games will even let you collect magical items and accessories, and you can really customize your game-self as much as you want, and let your virtual self represent your ideal/desired physical self.
And now I’ll list a few games I personally enjoy the most for video game magick, and my personal applications of them, which hopefully will inspire you.
Pokemon - Using Pokemon is something I’ve seen others doing. Some great people on witchblr have made entire masterposts of Pokemon offerings and invocations based on their elemental types, and certain kinds of magick associated with each type, etc. I recommend checking out those posts. Transfer all experience points from your Pokemon, and all in-game money you earn, into alchemized energy that you can put into your magick. Use a custom character name, and custom Pokemon names as mantrical sigils, every time you read the name, the mantra is activated.
Skyrim - Use your in-game character to be the representation of your real-life self. Gain experience for your character, alchemize and transmute it into energy for yourself. Create potions and use herbalism and alchemy in game. When your character drinks them, you get the benefits. Absorb Dragon Souls. Use your thu'uum as spell incantations. Perform rituals to the best of your ability in game. You can easily find a magical sword, a magical staff/wand, a pile of coins, and a source of water, or a cup, to represent all the magickal tools. Customize your character with your desired appearance.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice - This is a game based on a Celt warrior named Senua, who needs to restore her dead lover’s soul from Hel. Runes constantly appear in the game, and they really seem to have done much research for the game to get the runes right. It’s also a game that represents mental illness, specifically psychosis. Senua hallucinates, has visions, hears voices, and sees runes in her world. The game is very streamlined with a simple interface, and innovative combat system, with trials to get through that can be imprinted with ritualized intent. The action is great for getting into a state of single-pointed awareness gnosis. It also has a lot of really cool lore, that’s actually based on a real magickal tradition spanning back centuries. Extra recommended for anyone dealing with mental or physical disability/illness.
DOOM: ETERNAL - If you can deal with hyper-violence in video games, DOOM is great. It’s intensely fast-paced, so great for getting into the flow state, because if you don’t the demons will likely overtake you. There are many rune-esque symbols in the game that can be programmed with intent and used as sigils. Assign a certain negative feeling to each of the various types of demons. For example, any time you see a Cacodemon, link it to Gluttony, and then sacrifice it, and let that represent you exorcising your gluttony, etc. Extremely good for excitatory gnosis, the fights come in natural waves, so after every intense fight, before letting yourself feel relief or the excitement and adrenaline start to fade, isolate the feelings, remove their usual emotional connotations, and use the energy for spellcasting, and then finally release it for a very cathartic experience.
Destiny 2 - Destiny 2 is a fun game, that’s now largely free-to-play on pc, xbox, and playstation. It involves space travel, aliens, they literally say “space magic” at one point, which is about as close to saying “cosmic witchcraft” as one can get without saying it. Travel to different planets and moons, and protect the last survivors of humanity from hostile alien forces. Destiny 2 is great for gnosis, because it’s easy enough to mostly be able to just play by instinct. There are dozens of accessories, emblems, etc, with sigils on them, that can be imprinted with intent, that each character class can get. You can design your character as a sigil that gets charged with every kill/death. Charge your name with intent. All experience goes to your real-life self. Charge missions with ritualized intent. Finishing the mission is finishing your ritual. In magick, the belief and intent are more important than the method, in my experience. Create servitors based on the aesthetic of the “Ghosts”, that help you learn new information, and act as protection, or healing. Visualize having one of the rechargeable shields from the game, and the ability to “revive” from failures, and move on.
Warcraft 3: This is an old-game now, 20 years old (Jeebus…), but a good one for magick. You can use the mapmaker to design maps with sigils drawn in, using the trees and buildings you can draw them, and then upload the maps for others to play in, charging your sigil. Many real-time strategy games can be used, but I prefer Warcraft, as it’s also got to do with magic, and I have a lot of emotional attachment to the game, first playing it when I was a young child. Again, charge characters with intent, when they take/deal damage they charge, when you shut the game down, it releases the energy into the Universe.
Final Fantasy - Another series that has to do with magic, and can be great inspiration. Tarot-esque cards can be collected in many games, that can be given meanings. The series trademark “Guardian Forces” can be used as a custom pantheon, giving them each magickal associations and abilities. They can be invoked at any time as your own personal guardians, protecting and warding your space, or healing and charging you, etc.
That should do for now. Some other games that can be used for similar applications (that are also just fun to play) include: The Witcher series, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Dark Souls, Ori, Overwatch, Call of Duty, Halo, Kingdom Hearts, Elder Scrolls Online, Injustice, Ark: Survival Evolved, Dead Cells, Wizard of Legend, Minecraft, Animal Crossing, Diablo 3, Pillars of Eternity, Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur, and many more. Get creative!
If anyone has any suggestions of how they incorporate video games into their magickal practice, Feel free to add them in comments/tags, etc. ❤️ 🖖

Quick tip for neurodivergent witches
Do you stim or have any hyperfixations?
Let me show you how you could take advantage of this and use it in your practice!
• Set intentions!
Literally, just set intentions for your stims or hyperfixations.
It's most likely something you do or think about often so it requires little energy and to set an intention you basically just need your mind.
It could be about anything you want!
Examples:
➜ "Every time I think about a character from Good Omens, it attracts positivity."
➜ "Every time I play Hades video game, it brings me luck."
➜ "Every time I flick my fingers, I flick away stanky, negative energy."
[This is something I do; I kind of flick my fingers as a stim]
Overall, you could set intentions to some low-energy things you find yourself doing a lot anyway. It requires little effort and you can get pretty creative!

Low Energy Witchcraft .01
🖼 Make a mood board or vision board as a simple intention spell. Choose colors, images, text, etc. that represent your intention and use an app or website to make a collage or put everything in a folder together. Add your own photos, text, sigils, etc. or print out and arrange images on patterned paper if you have more energy. Use it as your phone background to charge it.
🕯 Light a candle. This can be a physical candle, a flameless/electronic candle, or even a candle on an app on your phone. Use colored candles if desired or use a marker, washi tape, etc. to color a flameless candle. Wax candles can also be carved with a sharpened pencil or pushpin to add a word or sigil. Use a marker to add one to a flameless candle. Meditate, journal, breathe intentionally, or create a more complex spell/ritual with your candle.
☁️ Watch the rain or clouds. If you have a window that is accessible look for shapes in the clouds. This can be used as form of divination or meditation.
🛁 Take a shower or wash your hands. Visualize all negative energy washing off of your body and down the drain. Use a soap with scents, colors, or ingredients that help with protection, calming, or any other intentions.
☕ Stir intention into your drinks. Use a straw or spoon and stir drinks or soups clockwise to invite positive energy. Repeat a mantra or intention if desired.
📝 Speak or write your intention. Repeat your intention verbally or write it on a piece of paper, a bay leaf, or on any other material. This can then be burned, buried, or torn into pieces. Make sure all materials are safe before burning them and that anything buried is eco-friendly. Ex) Write on a banana with a pen or marker and then eat the fruit and discard or compost the peel.
🎶 Create a playlist of songs for meditation, spellwork, a diety, or for self care.
🔮 Use apps or websites to pull tarot cards for study, journaling or reflection.
🎨 Use a coloring app to color pictures related to an intention or as an act of devotion to a diety. Choose colors associated with your intention or diety and/or meditate while coloring. Ex) Coloring an owl to devote to Athena or using pinks and reds in a self love image.
📱 Create a digital altar. Combine images, text, etc. to represent dieties, tools, elements, etc. Digital "offerings" can even be added or exchanged regularly.

spoonie witch tip!
i recently discovered an app that virtually lets you do candle work/spells! you pick out the color candle you would like to use, type in your intention and when you're ready to start, a video will start of someone lighting/the candle and it burning!! very helpful if you can't use candles/wax melts, don't have it accessible right away or just have low energy. also great for closet witches!

Low Energy Witchcraft
I'm neurodivergent and i experience really intense burnout. I get to a point where I struggle to even get out of bed, take my meds, remember to drink water, let alone practice. But, when I want to practice i have a list of things i can usually do. Everyone's experiences with burn out/low energy are different so this list may not apply to you, and that's okay. Take what resonates, leave what doesn't and i hope you enjoy my silly little list :)
create a playlist and infuse it with an intention. eg, a money spell playlist filled with songs about wealth.
draw sigils with soap when in the shower. (you can also use a wet wipe if you can't shower)
found some juice? give it a little shake and use the ingredients as a spell.
have food that has grains as ingredients? wow! an abundance spell!
the classic add intention to your tea and coffee.
bind your hair. for me with is as simple as putting my hair in a ponytail.
watch a witchy video. while not technically practising witchcraft, sometimes all you need is to sit back and relax to connect with your practice.
when I have a decent amount of energy I'll grab a large pillar candle and carve sigils into it. I use it as a long-term spell; all I have to do to activate it is light the candle. I like to light one of these spell candles when I'm having a bad day.
if you're religious, pray. Even if you're lying in bed. Even if you haven't showered in a week. If it makes you happy and you can, do it
burn some insence! it smells good, you don't have to really worry about forgetting about it, it's good for cleansing. it's great!
take a nap with some crystals. any restorative crystals or calming crystals work great! just make sure that they aren't geodes or roughs. i'd hate for you to hurt yourself while sleeping.
if you don't have any crystals for your nap, set an intention instead. please let yourself rest.
It's important to remember that you're allowed to take breaks from your craft. If you're forcing yourself to practice when you have no energy because "that's what a good witch would do!" then you're probably going to make your situation worse. it's a great way to fall out of love with witchcraft. give yourself some grace. rest is infinitely more important than 1 full moon, 1 new moon, or missing your daily/weekly/monthly cleanse. You aren't a bad person if you don't pull your morning tarot card or check the astrology forecast for today. and you aren't a bad person if you miss your daily prayer. take care of yourself. your health is WAY more important than your craft. Go get a drink of water and take care of yourself <3

Does anyone have advice for how to stick to practicing or studying Paganism/witchcraft while chronically ill? I've been feeling so, so run down & it's put me in the "what's the point?" mentality with almost every aspect of my life, but I know that worsens my mental health which makes my physical health that much harder to deal with & I've sort of let myself get into a vicious cycle.
I haven't been able to go on my woodland walks because the cold makes my pain worse & it's definitely contributing to a spiritual disconnect. I thrive in the Summer swell of heat & life. I wish I could hibernate for half the year...

Shoutout to all us witches who have been struggling mentally and physically and whose practices have been suffering. Solidarity to the witches whose practice has just been a quick prayer there and then, a cup of tea, a blessing while you take your meds, or even to the witches whose practice is completely on hold at the moment while you focus on your health. Love to the witches who are just doing their best. I feel you. You’re still a witch. You are powerful. You can do this.

So I'm feeling a little down and very low energy, and writing and helping brings me joy, so here's some "it's far too overcast and cold for me to be mentally well" witch ideas:
Light incense. Don't visualize or do magic. Light it up and say, "yay, I like incense."
Make tea. Sloosh it around in your mug a little. Say, "it's just like the ocean." Drink the ocean.
If you are a little cold, say, "I manifest warmth." Go find a bigger, cozier sweater or a blankie. Get warm. Your spell has manifested. You are magic.
Find some of your clickity clackity rocks. Make a crystal grid of no more than three rocks. No matter what grid you make, the intent is, "I have just done a productivity." When you are done, your spell has simultaneously been cast and become manifest.
Wash one dish. Look at it and know that it loves you. You and the dish are friends now.
Imagine what kind of cat you would like to have, if you did want a (new) cat. Think about its appearance and personality. Give it a name. It is now your thoughtform. Enjoy.
Watch that one Netflix show you've been saving forever for a time when you're ready to focus. Do or do not focus. When you are done watching the show, say, "I knew it."

A short list of ways to add some magic to your every day life (for disabled folks):
-say a blessing over your pills
-draw a sigil on the bottom of your cane; every time your cane strikes the ground your sigil is strengthened
-charge your electrolyte drink in the moon
-embroider sigils on your wheelchair cover
-let your energy/pain levels guide you in your day; listening to your body is indeed a form of magic
-bless your medical cannabis or other medicinal herbs
-draw sigils on yourself using pain cream or other topical medication
-charge your bottle of distilled water in the moon/sun before using it in your CPAP
-set intentions into braces (strength & support are some of my favorites)
-bless any & all mobility aids to help you
-use your pain when hexing or cursing
-ward your insulin pump against occlusions or failure
-set the intention of dumping the shit in your life when you empty your ostomy
-when using counter maneuvers for POTS, visualize yourself being grounded & connected to the earth
-use the extended digestion time with gastroperesis as a multiplier for kitchen magic
