Forget Streaming, Return to Winamp

I hear some of you are getting a little tired of the streaming service gauntlet! Did you know you can play mp3s with Winamp 5.6x, a very old program that plays songs perfectly fine from your PC, where your songs should be? (Newer versions add bullshit, you can decide whether you want that, but you don't.)

Did you know I made several really fucking good Utena Winamp skins? That aren't even on the website anymore because I broke the Multimedia section trying to make it easier to update in 2009? They might even be older than you, dear reader. I show my work hunting through my own website for shit I just forgot was there in a thread on Something Eternal, but if you just want the sauce:

Pictured in the order I made them, the first four are AT LEAST as old as April 2002. The last three were made in 2006 and 2007. All of them are in this 2mb ZIP, a comically small file for content I spent a small fortune hosting back when 2mb was a fucking massive amount of data, lmaaaao.

That's right, the time has come to make the master digitized copies of the production artwork of Revolutionary Girl Utena, via insane scans of the massive two volume Hardcore of UTENA artbook.

Because of how the forum software works, I'll be going in reverse order through the books, which means we start with the movie artwork. This is artwork I do have on the gallery, via the original scans Rushita made of the swap cards they're printed on. But those had frames, and these? Clean. Beautiful. Some of that is their work, and a lot of it is mine. This will be a slow process. If you like it, consider supporting our efforts, or just coming to hang out with us on our forum, Something Eternal! There you will find an incredible ongoing archive of Utena magazine clippings and artbooks, as well as our scanlated Utena books! Yeah, it's like, plural now.

The 'master' copies of these scans are 10k pixels wide, and will eventually be on the Internet Archive. The uploaded copies are 6k. That's also an insane size. I'm adding this because I had to resize the 'smaller' copies even more to get Tumblr to take them.

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX writer Yoji Enokido's commentary from the two Revolutionary Girl Utena script books for the episodes of Utena that he wrote....TRANSLATED.

We sent these two 1998 script books, The Rose Bride and The Rose Crest, to Nagumo, who confirmed there are indeed deviations in the published scripts compared to the final result...so I guess that's these puppies on the scanner chopping block! But in the meantime, the episode commentaries themselves have been translated, as always, by our friend Nagumo, with Ayu Ohseki editing! The Revolutionary Girl Utena Ciao! Magazine Cover & Furoku Gallery!!!

Amazing fellow archivist @hotwaterandmilk offered a while back to rescan the Utena color covers and furoku from a truly gargantuan collection of Ciao! Magazines, so we could clean them and host them on Empty Movement!

The color covers do ALL have unobstructed copies elsewhere in the gallery, however we now see them as they were first presented, loaded with hype-inducing flavor text that really lets you know, this magazine is for the youngins! The customary furoku, a thing I didn't know existed for most of my time in this fandom, has also been rescanned, then cleaned and organized by me, and offers a variety of adorable little tidbits, like shiny Christmas stickers, a challenge book, New Years cards, and my personal favorite:

The color cover for installment 7 is the result of a contest held where fans submitted outfits for Utena to wear, with the winner's fit being translated into Chiho Saito artwork! You can see some of the other submissions, including pant legs with cuts that really serve Final Fantasy to me for some reason?? But this rules, imagine being this kid and getting your outfit made into real artwork. Incredible, heartwarming, showstopping.

That's right! Did you know this movie manga artwork, that graced many a wall in the early 00s, is based on a real photo of movie Akio's voice actor and mangaka Chiho Saito, taken at the iconic Meguro Club Sekitei love hotel? Well, it is!

And you know what else? We translated the interview it came with! H! Rockin' On Japan is a music-oriented magazine, covering the Utena movie more from Oikawa's perspective. The queer vibes in the interview are off the charts, and it's clear as day that the shift in Akio's visual style from the series to the film is in no small part in response to Oikawa's involvement. This interview is a really neat look into the context around that change, and it's all thanks to translation by Nagumo and editing by Ayu Ohseki! HEY. HI. VANNA HERE. Yes, I've seen the countless messages, mostly on Tumblr, begging for links to download the musical, a static accessible copy of the script, and lyrics in Japanese for the main banger, Absolute Darkness: The Rose Garden.

I've procrastinated on this for many reasons! The script was worked out live in the subtitles, making it...kinda hard to translate back into a normal format. Thanks Notepad++ as always for that one. Also, I've felt like I should make a website for this content, and I still think that, but it also has impeded my sharing the content, and that sucks. But you know what? WE HAVE A FORUM.
