I have a problem where really large bugs make me completely panic. I don't want to hurt them and I think they are cool but when confronted with XL bug my body just goes No. In the summers (this went on for years) when I was home from college and I went out with my friend and she would drop me back off at night, almost every time waiting for me on the front porch was an XL stag beetle (surprising for suburban NJ). He would sit directly in front of the door so that I had to confront it in order to get into the house. I would shout to my friend in the car and she being my best friend would then get out of the car come up and lightly brush it aside so I could get in the house. 💛
I painted this piece to honor the bug, who I also came to consider a friend. He was just making sure I got home safe I think.
#painting this was also like exposure therapy because I had to look at the close up photo I took of the bug for a while#hope he is doing well#artistic liberty taken the bug is dark brown not red irl#gouache#stag beetle#bug art#traditional art#bug story#my art

An underground town by the name Coober Pedy is a small mining town with a population of just under 2,000, but it’s also the “opal capital of the world” and has been supplying most of the world’s gem-quality opal since it was founded in 1915. In this waterless environment, not much activity goes on above ground and instead, the community exists in a network of tunnels underneath the desert earth, inside some 1,500 homes and dwellings they call their “dug-outs.” (Via)
