Tenth Piece
Tumblr media
This piece feels a tad out of place within my project as it is inspired by a book cover and there has been a major focus on music and album covers. However, at the very beginning I took these photos before I had narrowed my project down and didn’t want to waste them. They are inspired by the cover of “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky and on the cover the photos are surrounded by writing - a passage from the book itself. I had to come up with the writing I would use on my recreation and the phrase that particularly stood out to me, that I felt related to the emotion portrayed in the pictures, was “You are not good enough”. To introduce more of a storytelling aspect I chose to alter the writing as it progressed. Adding “You will never be enough” at around halfway down. I also switched between lowercase and uppercase line by line as well as altering the sizes of the writing to make it appear more messy to resemble the characters thoughts and how uncontrollable they feel. I changed the last line as well to say “I am not good enough” as it introduces the storyline that they were being told this message and now they have accepted it to be the truth. This is certainly a very sad piece. None of my others have had such a melancholy concept attached to them. Visually, I am considerably happy with this piece. The discolouration of the central photo is a tad annoying but it is lessened by the fact that it can also be found on the edges of the other photos as well.

Ninth Piece
Tumblr media
An acrylic painting of the cover of Panic! at the Disco’s album “Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!”. I had some struggles when it comes to this piece. When I first finished it I was so disheartened that I was not going to involve it in my project. All I could see were the faults with the likeness, the questionable hair and how bad the smoke looked in my eyes as by the time I painted it I was already giving up with this piece. It was intended to be inspired by the work of the artist Casey Baugh but it looks more like a continuation of my Shawn Mendes piece and is more reminiscent of Davide Cambria’s art. However, now when I look at it I don’t see it in such a bad light. While those faults still remain, it acts as a good continuation of me developing the style that I learnt by studying Cambria, that I absolutely loved, but this time changing it by being more experimental with the colours. Plus, I actually really like the colour palette I used within this piece. And I didn’t completely lack inspiration from Baugh as the work of his that I looked at had people emerging from dark backgrounds with a pop of colour worked into their faces. I maintained the dark backgrounds and while the entirety of the face is rather colourful the yellow does stand out. In the end, I find myself happy with this piece.

Eighth Piece
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a watercolour self-portrait inspired by the work of Tsukiko Kiyomidzu. The original photo I referenced for this piece was inspired by the cover of Panic! at the Disco’s album ‘Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!’. I rather like this piece. I’m not very confident in my abilities with watercolours as I tend to be too scared to be bold with the application of colour and I also tend to struggle with maintaining the likeness. With this paper I was even more concerned about the likeness as i couldn’t rub out my base drawing without picking up the paper and having to completely restart. Thankfully, my initial base drawing was strong enough to work with and I managed to achieve a somewhat good likeness. The colours aren’t bold but they all work nicely together. I used a fineliner to outline everything which helps to separate the features due to them all being constructed of the same colours. The black triangles are painted using acrylic paint as that was the easiest way to achieve a flat block of black. I like how they frame the face and the contrast between the subtle colours and rounded features with these straight-edged, bold and black shapes. I especially like the mouth in this painting. I think they have the most dimension due to the accurate variation of tone on the lips with the deeper red around the edges and then the paper showing through to imply a shine and light. Overall, I am very happy with how this piece turned out.

Seventh Piece
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Self portrait using ink and a dip pen. I have scarcely used this medium and am very happy with the result. The artist I was inspired by for this piece was the comic artist Jim Lee. I love the way they use cross-hatching to create characters in great detail. The photo itself is a recreation of the cover of Jess Glynne’s album ‘I Cry When I Laugh’. The main point of interest is the hair and how it’s covering parts of my features and I feel I did a good job of maintaining that interest. I chose to make the style of the hair different to that of the face as I did not feel that cross-hatching would be as effective. I made it very messy and random as to how I filled in the hair, except for certain strands that I thought stood out. There were a few parts where ink dripped out of the dip pen onto the piece, such as in the eye, but thankfully they don’t ruin it and I actually rather like how it looks. I also achieved a rather good likeness thanks to using a grid to draw the basic features at the beginning of the process. Overall, I really like this piece and plan to complete more ink work in the future.

Sixth Piece
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piece using acrylic paints inspired by the work of Davide Cambria of the cover of Shawn Mendes’ self-titled album. I am very happy with this because I did not use a base drawing and instead started with the plain green background which I have only just began to do and I believe it has turned out rather well. While the likeness is not very good throughout the piece, it does not bother me due to the fact that I challenged myself and it is still recognisable as the cover of his album. Also, I am pleased with how the colours compliment each other atop the green and how I managed to let the background peek through without looking unnatural. In particular, I like the right side of the painting. I tried to be a little bit more experimental with the colours I introduced into the skin tone than I would usually be with light pink highlights and orange and yellow tones together whcih worked really well. I also added some light green to tie it all together and let the dark green of the background be the outline of they eye rather than painting over it. Overall, I am pleased with the piece I managed to create, despite its flaws, due to the challenge it was for me.

Fifth Piece
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A collage piece inspired by the work of Marcelo Monreal and also the cover of Shawn Mendes’ self-titled album. I chose to keep my face and the background to a more limited colour palette but then branch out into a variation of colours for the flowers to create contrast and also bring the flowers forward and push my face back. I am very inexperienced with collaging and struggle to find the right colours that compliment each other as well as patterns. Therefore, I am sure there are imperfections within this piece but overall, I am considerably happy with it. It was a chance to experiment with a different medium within my project. I am very happy with how I split the original image/drawing into sections and would love to try and bring that aspect into a painting in the future.

Fourth Piece
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HB pencil sketches. I chose to be more experimental with my mark making and wanted to achieve a more messy style which I think I did in comparison to my previous pencil work. The likeness of the sketch of my whole face is slightly off but not so much so that it is unrecognizable as me. I much prefer the zoomed in sketch as I find it much easier to draw bigger facial features and feel it appears a more skillful and refined piece of work while still having the more experimental marks that become particularly apparent within the hair in both sketches. Overall, I am happy with both sketches even if it’s one more than the other.

Third Piece
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Watercolour piece inspired by the work of Agnes Cecile. I have always loved this messy watercolour style and I believe I have achieved that while also achieving a reasonable likeness so I am very happy. I think the drips work very well from the eyes and nose and I haven’t used too many which it is easy to accidentally do and get carried away. I was concerned about the hair not having texture and the sheer amount of water I used but the paper has only buckled a small amount and when I went back in with small highlights it all came together.

Photos
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sketchbook pages documenting my first set of photographs for the project, all of which I am very happy with. The first set are inspired by and an attempt to recreate the cover of Sam Smith’s album “The Thrill of it All” so the photo had to be in black and white and I had to be straight-faced. I was also not meant to be looking at the camera but I couldn’t achieve that without it looking weird and unintentional. The second set are inspired by Shawn Mendes’ self titled album so I found some random fake flowers in my house and held them in front of the camera and I think they came out pretty good. However, my favourites are the last set inspired by the Panic! at the Disco album “Too weird to live, Too rare to die”.

Artist Study
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Artist study of Agnes Cecile. A few quick sketches experimenting with a few different mediums to create studies inspired by their work. The study done with watercolour is definitely my favourite as I have always loved using drips and splatters in my work and I achieved a reasonable likeness. I will most likely use watercolours for my final piece and adapt to the bigger scale, as it is easier to achieve the messy style I would like to portray.

This is acrylic on canvas. My second time painting on a canvas and I loved it. I achieved a good likeness and challenged myself by including a hand which I usually struggle with.

Artist Study

These pages are small studies into the work of Tomasz Mro whose work I love. I had a lot of fun experimenting with the bright yellow and would love to incorporate it into future pieces. The same with the gold lines framing the face inspired by Tomasz’s piece ‘Trapped in Agony’.

First Piece!
Tumblr media
The main focus of my project is cover art so I have chosen three records I own to recreate first. One being Sam Smith’s album ‘The Thrill of it All’. This piece is also inspired by Tomasz Mro. I used a HB pencil, fineliner and acrylic paint and am beyond happy with how it turned out.

Initial Studies
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My first few pages. The majority of this project will consist of self portraits so I decided to begin by completing some studies of my face also doing a little experimenting with some different mediums such as coloured pencils which I almost never use. The watercolor study went wrong as the eye on the left is too low down but the main focus was to be more confident with colours which was succesful.
