Unit 8

youtube
Description...
In this short clip you can see us working on part of the dance. Prior to this clip I also practiced doing the dance I know so far whilst seeing to see if there was any parts that were difficult to both sing and dance to.
Context...
I took the idea for this part of the dance from the original choreography in bad girls the musical. I wanted the dance to be very similar to the original . During this part of the dance all the women come together and completely let loose.
Research...
The main research I did into this lesson was watching the dance over and over again to ensure we do the right moves. I also did in depth research into Yvonne's facial expressions. After this session I will be researching into maleficent as she has very similar characteristics to Yvonne and I want to see if I can create a combination of both characters.
Evaluation...
During this lesson our major breakthrough was learning this part of the dance. My aim for next lesson is to complete the dance and add my singing throughout.

Description...
During this rehearsal our main focus was working on my solo Alist and the harmonies involved in the song. We all stood in voice type groups and used to cameras in order to fit everyone in a video. In this lesson we successfully performed the song with harmonies . You can see me in this video stood front centre.
Context...
This song is in our musical Baddest and the best in this song I play the character Yvonne who is explaining to the other inmates that being in prison doesn't have to be boring. We are using harmonies in this song to make it more interesting and engaging to the audience it also adds more depth and dimensions to the song.
Research...
I need to do more research into Yvonne's mannerisms to start working on the staging of this piece. I have already done a mass amount of research into this scene and my character as a whole.what I have learnt from this research is Yvonne puts up a very firm front but deep down is very lonely and feels as though she has failed her own children so takes on a motherly figure in hopes to make up for her being a bad mum to her own kids.
Evaluation...
Overall this was a successful lesson as we learnt all the harmonies we needed to and completed the song. Next lesson my aim is to really focus on the dance that goes with the song and also work on my individual vocals.

Description...
In this lesson our main focus was to work on learning on the individual poses in A list my solo song. I am stood at the centre of the video and do different poses to everyone else . My solo also counts as a group dance so everyone learnt this dance in rehearsal.
Context...
I am learning this solo for our musical bad girls. In this particular section of the dance all the women in prison our starting yo get drunk and letting their hair down. My character Yvonne is explain go all the other inmates how important it is to have fun and how they should do more exciting things with their lives. They all show off how they are feeling through a rangeof multiple poses at this time.
Research....
All our poses in this section our based of our characters. I personally did In depth research into my character Yvonne through watching the musical and the TV show whilst watching these I focused on the way shemoves and her posture. Yvonne is a mobsters wife and Is a very proud woman all her movements are very seductive and extravagant . I based mu poses off this description I used a lot of arm movements and even added a strut.
Evaluation...
Overall this was a successful lesson. After watching back the video we did decide that maybe the moves should be added in at a later point and do that section of music in unison this will add more depth to the dance and make it more interesting for the audience to watch. In this lesson I think I developed my confidence skills through learning themoves and will continue to develop this through the next few sessions this will also help Mr with my character development as Yvonne isa very confident character.

Vocalwarm up
Description...
In this lesson we focused on warming up and the importance of a warm up . I am sat inbetween the girl in a film hoodie and boy on the front row. In this lesson we did an extended warmup to help us as we had a very singing based lesson the full day. We did a range of vocal warmups helping our pitch , projection, articulation and placement. These are all key parts on improving my singing.
Context...
We started with the warmup joy hoy this involves repeating the phrase over and over moving up a key everytime. This helps me move from my chest voice to my head voice with is something I often struggle with whilst singing. The next warmup we did was flexibility this helps me use my diaphragm. The use of my diaphragm will help projection. Our next exercise was tiawhich works on placement which makes the sound come from the front of your mouth and the top of your head the change of placement changes the overall sound you produce whilst singing. Personally I mainly sing from my chest which is good but means I struggle to reach higher notes so this warmup helps me sing from other resonators. Our next exercise was Chester cheetah this exercise helps improve diction and articulation. Often whilst singing it may be difficult to hear the words you are singing so thus exercise helps make sure you are pronouncing the words correctly. Our next exercise was cucumber which does the same as Chester cheetah but works on different vowel and constenants. Finally we finished on dizzy busy bop which also works on diction this warmup also helps with concentration and focus. With out concentration and focus it is often difficult to sing and stay in character.
Research...
Evaluation...
All together this was a successful warmup and helped not only my singing in the short term but also in the long term as it developed multiple skills needed to sing. This warmup prepared me to sing all lesson and also made my singing a higher quality.

Unit 8
28/03/22
In our lesson we started with warmups we started with fuzzy duck. This warmup consists of us all standing in a circle and we say fuzzy duck to the person and our left and say ducky fuzz to the person on our right to change direction we say duzzy to change the direction . We do this warmup to engage focus and help us get in the acting mood. We then did enough warmup called a solemn day which is yet again started with us all standing in a circle. The aim of this warmup is to make the person on your left laugh. We do this warmup to help us stay in character on stage as often when saying or responding to a funny line it is difficult not to react. Next we learnt about Stanislavski he created something in acting called the system. We learnt about the magic ‘if' and about the fourth wall this is an invisible wall which is in front of the audience . The aim when acting is to break this fourth wall and interact with the audience . We then learnt about given circumstance , this is all about facts we read through our scripts and found out about our characters given circumstances. As Yvonne I found out she is a very motherly figure and puts on a constant firm front when often she feels weak and vulnerable. After this we looked deeper into Proscenium theatres . This describes the space that surround the stage and helps create the fourth wall. In this style of theatre the audience all sit facing the same way on raked seating, the stage is also often raised in this type of theatre. Bitesize. (2022). Staging. Available: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zjwp2sg/revision/2. Last accessed 31/03/22. I then looked into muscle memory. This is when an action is embedded into your memory and comes naturally without you having to think about it. My aim was to make the characteristics of our character become muscle memory. Naturalism is a style of theatre that uses an illusion to create a sense of reality. Realism is the aim to bring a new sense of fidelity to the performance. I lay in semi supine to help connect with our emotional core and also help open our diaphragm. During semi supine exercise I was focusing on my diaphragm and noticed that my exhale is steady, well controlled and muscles are engaged constantly ensuring good projection and vocal health during future performances and rehearsals. We all created personal stories on why our character ended up the way they did you can see my back story in my unit 8 folder.
Overall , this was a helpful lesson in helping me with not only scene 9 but my character throughout the whole performance. In this lesson I learnt that there is a lot more depth to Yvonne’s character and how I can portray these emotions . My biggest challenge in the lesson today was the warmup a solemn day as I often struggle not laughing. This can also be an issue during certain scenes and causes me to break character. I will continue to do this exercise in order to improve the fact I break character when laughing. I learnt what facial expressions to use and also what body language to use to show Yvonne’s given circumstance. During this lesson I also learnt a range of new terms ...
Solemn ... a feeling of deep sadness and grief often due to mourning
Stoicism..... the development of self control and overcoming destructive emotions
Traverse.... travel across or through
Realism... aim to bring a new sense of fidelity to a performance
Naturalism.... uses illusion to create a new sense of reality
Muscle memory.... a movement action or even phrase you do without thinking Dictionary . (2022). Dictionary . Available: https://www.dictionary.com. Last accessed 31/03/22.
My action plan for next session is to start looking into the songs and we are also going to start staging and choreographing. Today’s session will help with that as we looked into how we should act as our characters and the backstory in to how we ended up in the situation we are in . Things I would like to improve gradually is my breath control which is something we focused on this session. This is important as the use of breath support allows you to sing to your full potential and project properly. I will continue to practice this skill every rehearsal and every warmup.

Description...
In this video we are rehearsing a part of the song where we all join in . In this video specifically we finally got the timing right .
Evaluation...
Now we have the timing right for the song we really need to work on our vocals. Personally I need to work on singing in my characters voice but also making sure I hit the right notes .
Context...
This is an important part of the performance as this is when we first see all the characters together . One of the main things into the woods is about is the characters crossing paths within their stories . This scene shows how all the characters have similar aspirations.
Research....
My focal point of research is to work on the voice I want to maintain for Jack's mother. This his to differentiate from my witch voice.

Description...
In this video you can see a full run through of our dance . This was the final version of our dance which we now need to keep going over to make sure it is perfect.
Evaluation..
From this video you can see we really need to work on the transitions . Personally I think the dance looks like it hasn't been blended and we all look more like we are doing separate dances instead of one as a company.
Context...
This dance is our opening number. In this dance we really focused on showing off our unique and individual characters as well as showing we are one and going through similar situations .
Research....
From this rehearsal I have realised I need to research further in to facial expressions for a witch . You can see I look worried but I really need to work on looking sinister and evil . I can do this by making a mood board.

Description....
In this video you can see I am stretching my face . We do this to work on facial expressions. I do this in a range of ways including chewing fake foods and mouth stretches.
Context ...
The purpose of this warm up is to get used to using facial expressions . Facial expressions are key parts of a performance ad they add depth to the performance and help show your character.
Evaluation...
I did will in this warm up, however I need to continue to use facial expressions during my dance . I often forget this due to concentration and nerves .
Research....
I need to do a more in depth research in to witches facial expressions . I tend to maintain a worried facial expression but I need to focus more on being sinister and look more like I am dominating the space and the performance.

Description...
In this video you can see we are doing a warmup . I am the girl with a bun in the second group.we learnt this warmup in 20 minutes and we do it to prevent injury, gain energy and help concentration.
Evaluation...
This warm up was successful as It helped warm me up, prevent injury and help me gain concentration. I picked up the moves reasonably quickly and performed it well . I can clearly see I am not maintaining good posture and need to work on my core .
Context..
If you do warmups overtain it can help you gain strength and stamina.

In this video you can see we did a presentation on production roles . I talk about the selected roles I was given .
Evaluation...
I know a lot of information that relates to the production roles but I need to know this information off by heart . This is useful information as it will help me get into the industry .
Context ...
We did this presentation to show our teamwork and knowledge . In this presentation we had to work on being an individual and working in a team .
Research...
I could look even deeper into these roles and keep them as different pathways I could chose instead of being a performer.

Description.....
This video shows our first attempt at flocking. This is a style of dance where one person leads the dance and the others follow . This dance changes to different leaders in a seamless fashion.
Context.....
We practiced this as it is going to be part of our group dance . Flocking adds a range of texture and dimension to the dance . This will help interest and engage the audience.
Evaluation....
From this practice we learnt some people are better at being leaders than others . We used this information to chose 5 leaders to lead our flicking in the main dance .
Research....
We learnt flocking is often done in a diamond shape . It us also a firm of movement improvisation done in groups .

Description...
In this video you can see me warming up . Not only am i warming up but also working on my breathe control as I time my movement to my breath. I am the girl at the front .
Context...
We do this exercise to focus on control as we release our bodies and have to bring then back to a still position very quickly .this also helps with breath control and flexibility.
Evaluation...
Overall this was a useful exercise as it did help my control ,breath control and flexibility which are all areas I need to develop in . I personally felt this warm also helped me feel the music and connect more to it ready for my next dance .
Research...
Warm-ups are extremely important in any kind of dance as it helps prepare us and prevents injury. This Warm-up would help making sure I didn't pull a muscle in my groin . It also helps by getting you ready to dance this was a slow relaxing warm up which helped as after this I was Contemporary dancing.

Description...
In this video I am the one wearing white socks . In this video I am working on characterisation as the witch , being able to adapt a simple dance to relate more to my character as well as maintaining unison to represent that we are all one . We watched a video on a dance from into the hoods we then adapted this dance to our own pace . I portray this character by making sharper and wider moves , I do this to show I am part of the ensemble but also a unique and individual character.
Evaluation...
This rehearsal went well as this is the first time I have ever learnt or performed this dance. Overall I think I achieved my goal which was to show I am the witch through dance . I need to work more on my facial expressions and staying in unison with the other dancers I need to do this to look more professional. It was challenging learning this dance in such a short amount of time as it is something I have never done before. My next step will be to focus on my facial expressions and interaction with the audience.
Context ...
This dance is about the characters entering the woods, this is the first scene and number of the performance. This dance influences my role as this is when I show my characters persona . The context behind this is all the characters want the same things but also show their individuality.
Research...
From my research I know that my character is seen as a dark and scary character . I am also seen as a lonely character. This style is very big and includes a lot of suspension. The song is a very earthy and deep song which helps set the scene as we start to enter the woods .

Description...
In this video you can clearly here my voice but can visibly just see my leg . In this song I sing the lower part for the harmonies . This was a difficult performance as one of the soloists was not in so we had to find someone to understudy her song .
Evaluation ....
Overall this song was difficult to perform because all it takes to be ruined is one person to sing out of tune on their harmony . Without the solo we had to compromise and 3 people covered the solo .
Context ...
This song is from the musical rent and refers to the time in a year but the most important part of life being love . This is a sad song as in the musical the 4 main characters have either aids or hiv so do not know how long they have left of their lives to love .

Description...
Here is our final run through of the opening dance . I am the girl in the middle . You can see from my previous video that the dance is a lot sharper and a lot more moves had been added .
Evaluation ...
In this video the full dance has now been choreographed we jus need to work on polishing the number . My main area I need to work on is my exit from the stage as at the minute I leave to the right but in the final performance need to leave to the left to be ready for my next scene.
Context....
This scene contains 3 crooners who are played by the boys and 3 limber legged ladies played by the girls . In the final performance this dance will also contain Nick and Nostradamus which has now been been changed to Nostradamus, Nostrodemus and Nostradomos .

Description....
In this video you can see me and Jacob audition ing for the rolls of Nick and Nostradamus. This was our call back audition meaning we had already been through one stage of auditions . As you can see in the video I am holding a script this is due to nerves.
Evaluation....
Unfortunately I did not get this role but from this audition I have learnt to be more confident . Instead of focusing on messing up I need to enjoy the moment more .
Context ....
The characters we are playing are the two main characters in the performance. In this scene Nostradamus is explaining to Nick how he can see musicals in the future. Nick starts the song very confused as musicals would be ridiculed at this time but as the performance develops Nick decides he likes the idea and agrees musicals are great .

Evaluation....
This was our first ever time going through the dance. I made excellent progress during this rehearsal but need to work on my facial expressions.
Context...
This is the first dance in the performance sp needs to be exciting and contain a lot of energy. This dance is the one which makes the audience decide if they want to keep watching.
