Xie Lian is the most securely masculine of MXTX's main characters.

I've only just finished volume 3, but he's cross-dressed twice and established he is in the habit of saying he can't get erect/is impotent to put off women/accusations around women.

Yes, he does have moments of being embarrassed around both times he's in women's clothing, but the embarrassment is focused around the shift in situation. He's not embarrassed to be in the women's clothing the way, doesn't feel even slightly emasculated or bothered by it. Shen Qingqiu would die before he consented to wear womens clothing, and despite his shamelessness I can only see Wei WuXian doing it at someone elses request when no one is around and he can very definitively laugh it off and he'd be loudly aware of it the whole time.

Xie Lian on the other hand, not only suggests the method and volunteers himself without prompting, he moves around entirely at ease.

When the embarrassment comes, it's not because someone saw him in that clothing, but the situation they saw him wearing it. Pei Junior came and they had a whole dramatic meeting the first time, Hua Cheng had brought them to the Ghost Realm and he looked up to a crowd of joyous ghosts greeting their master.

Both times Xie Lian is like "wait, I'm dressed as a woman, oh no!", but it's subdued.

His embarrassment is more like someone who happily went to a comicon dressed as Big Tit's Gandalf who ran into an accident and helped or ran into an old coworker, then realized after the fact they were talking very seriously with the police/coworker about the incident/catching up while dressed as Bit Tit's Gandalf.

And the can't get erect excuse is something he had to hold in it was so much his first instinct. The only reason he didn't say it in the Palace of Divine Might in front of every god imaginable is because he was aware that wouldn't be appropriate. Without hesitation he'd do it in Ghost City or anywhere in the Human World though.

The only time he's embarrassed about it is when Hua Cheng (the man he's not subconsciously enough attracted to and therefore the only person he wouldn't want to think his dick didn't work) finds out he said that, and even then the embarrassment passes pretty quickly after Hua Cheng teases him and breaks the tension. It's not any kind of blow or threat to his masculinity, but him losing a bit of face in front of his crush.

Xie Lian is solidly, confidently a man. Completely unshakable in his masculinity. And I love that about him.

i actually get a bit annoyed with people who get a bit annoyed when people say “sorry” in response to their bad news. “why are you apologizing you didn’t do anything :/” like okay well a) you don’t know that and actually yes i am the secret architect of all your woes and have been this whole time, way to refuse to acknowledge a woman (gender neutral)’s accomplishments. and b) we’re both fluent english speakers so you know perfectly well that “sorry” isn’t always an apology and is very commonly used as an expression of general regret or sympathy. not in this case, because i have been your secret nemesis for years, meticulously plotting your every misery, but, like, in general
