Encaustic is the ancient technique of applying beeswax to various substrates. This gorgeous tactile medium lends a luminous texture, depth, and lustre to my images. My work is often and by design, heavily textured. I use brushing, carving, scraping and burnishing techniques to build up the wax, alternately laying down layers and fusing the wax to the piece, followed by more wax and more heat to increase this texture. I use filtered (white) or combination of both filtered and unfiltered beeswax (containing pollen which creates a yellow hue). Each image is mounted on a substrate -- wood, plaster, paper or canvas and worked with wax creating a one-of-a-kind piece, though the photograph may be reproduced, each wax encaustic piece is unique.
