I have the sliiiiight feeling that most people don't know gamedev jobs are contract based and you don't get money taken away from you if people don't buy the game you worked on. You don't get extra money if it sells well, either. I dunno how it is with like, directors, lead programmers+artists and shit but it's like that for the smaller hands of gamedev. Go, pirate a Nintendo. Who gives a shit.
#they never bring up wanting to support the devs when its a smaller studio who hasn't done anything fishy. just saying#it's always a flimsy excuse to buy big AAA game that they'll get bored of in a week#and the devs they claim to care about will not see anything regardless of sales#a few positions can have some sway depending on contracts. music people can sometimes hold on to their rights#but they won't see anything either because the studio would sooner cut them out for daring to ask for a fair share#god forbid somebody who isn't a shareholder get a bit of money

I've remarked in the past that one of the big reasons the whole "pay us a bunch of money to put your OC in our game" thing some video game Kickstarters do rarely works out is because the sort of person who's willing to pay a thousand bucks to put their OC in a video game tends also to be the sort of person who thinks it's reasonable to expect the game's entire narrative to be re-ordered to their liking because they contributed 0.1% of its production budget; it's not, of course, so what you typically end up with in practice is a random asshole who shows up, lectures the player character about how their deal is so much cooler than the game's actual plot, then never appears again.
More recently, I've been reading Chris Longhurst's Bleak Spirit, and I was struck by something it said on the topic of how to play Soulslike-style NPCs in a tabletop RPG: to paraphrase, their essential tragedy is that they all think they're the player character. Every one of them has a personal quest which they're convinced is the most important thing in the world, and they view everything through that lens; when they look at you, they literally can't see you – they only see the role in which they've cast you in their private epic. What dooms them, time and again, is being confronted with the fact that it's not about them.
Those two threads got tangled up in my brain, and now I have this horrible vision of a Soulslike video game whose world is populated entirely by people's crowdfunded OCs. It might even work!
#when everyone is the main character... no one will be#characters made by other people can work sometimes though Undertale has one or two#I think you just gotta talk with the person about it A LOT before the money is exchanged to make the whole deal clear#I kinda miss things like Megaman's boss contests... Almost all Megaman bosses were made by fans and that's cool!

It's really interesting (read: terrible) that US conservatives are so ready to go to bat for the fossil fuel industry they're still parroting decades old talking points about climate change which are so stupid that even the fossil fuel industry nowadays won't spout them publicly.
#someone from Alberta here! uh. extracting the oil sands is BAD for the environment they're getting it from#like. causing the land area to destabilize bad because they kinda need to destroy it to get the oil#the sands are probably one of the worst things to extract from because they're more tricky than the others and cause more pollutants#our air quality is shit. some of that might just be all the wildfire smoke but. we have a higher rate for asthma#and we can't get rid of it because our economy would collapse and none of the people who want to stop it propose a plan for new industries#like if you want to end it we need a stable ground to land on otherwise the whole province will go to complete shit#when you just say stop doing that and nothing more it scares the people here and those who fly in for work because that's their livelihood#and no one has a proposal for what will happen to them! or saying that they want people here to swap to a new thing!#i think what needs to be done is trying to put in better and cleaner jobs here so we aren't so dependant on the sands#so we don't NEED them any more. lean the province off instead of just kicking the legs out from under it

your opinion on does kidzbop count as censorship?
you know, this has been sitting in my inbox for nearly 4 years and I still don't have an answer
#even as a kid I thought kudzbop was the lamest most boring shit ever. Absolute loser music#now as an adult it's like. kinda fucking weird to take songs for adults and sanitize them for kids. especially when some are sexual songs#both because not everything needs to be accessible by children some things should be for adults but also like!#maybe the song where the guy was making euphamisms for his junk the whole time is not ok to make a 'clean' version of sung by kids!#that a pretty strange choice to pick to get a bunch of kids to sing along with! there's some bad implications there!#but yeah. most of them are just the type of songs that if another kid catches wiff that you listen to it your on a trip to bully town#cringe. kidsbop is cringe#if you got that shit on I know your parents don't let you drink pop eat candy play video games or leave the house past 7pm strick bedtime#I see I spelt it kudzbop in the first tag but im on mobile and don't respect them enough to fix it

Perhaps the rock is some sort of cocoon stage taken when moving from infant to child
Very funny to see Super Mario theorycrafters getting worked up about what Pauline being a little girl in Donkey Kong Bananza implies for the notional timeline, given that a. the specific version of Donkey Kong from the Donkey Kong Country franchise showing up in any sort of Super Mario crossover media has literally never made sense timeline-wise, but this is the final straw? and b. I feel like "why is she a child?" is eliding the much more pressing question of "why is she a rock?"

I'm a simple man, if a game has an expansion pass, battle pass, season pass or any other sort of pass I'd need to spend more money on I'm going to pass on your game
