"Giselle. Just today?" she asked, surprised and a little bit thrilled at having encountered someone on their very first day in Swynlake. "And you went straight to a bookstore. Good call."

Giselle smiled. Like a little baby bird elevator, powered by humans.
"Oh, that's a really good idea," she said. "Let's just... be very careful. I mean, I know you will. I will be, too."
She looked down at the baby bird again, who seemed more confused than scared. "I promise," she added to the nestling in Beast, though she didn't think the bird understood her regardless.
"Okay, ready?" Giselle asked, gently placing the baby bird in her jacket pocket before offering her hands to boost Marcy up.

That was definitely why Giselle's parents didn't want her going to parties.
And on one hand... yes. Giselle did not want to get arrested. She didn't want her parents to be disappointed in her. It was why Giselle had never tried to sneak out before.
But a small part of her was curious. What was it like to stay out late making bad decisions, drinking and smoking and dancing all night?
She felt weird saying that to Su, though, from the way Su had said that. "Uh, yeah. Totally," Giselle said, glancing up at Su before training her gaze back on the cinnamon roll. "Mmm. This is so good."

Giselle went silent, eyes on her shoes. She really didn't want to admit to Kleo that she regretted her wish. Not after their last conversation about it. Kleo would probably tell her to break up with Benjamin, and Giselle really couldn't listen to a persuasive argument about that right now. It would make her feel too mixed-up.
But she related to what Kleo was saying. It didn't feel quite right at all. Giselle had chosen to give up her degree, yes, but she hadn't expected her grades to tank the way they did, even as she continued to put forth her best effort. It felt wrong.
"I know what you mean," she said finally, looking up at Kleo. But she didn't elaborate. She just left it at that, her eyes wide and sad. "Maybe the terms could be... changed. I don't know. It's terrible to be without your family."

Giselle's eyebrows furrowed. She'd assumed, from the beginning, that Professor Sal wanted to help them. That that was the whole reason he made any deals at all, because he wanted to help people. It was actually the most selfless form of magic, if you thought about it, Giselle reasoned.
But Kleo was suggesting that maybe Professor Sal had taken advantage of them. That, maybe, he had ulterior motives that meant he wouldn't care very much if his wish-granting made people even unhappier than they would have been without it.
It felt very wrong to think, but it also made a lot of sense.
"So you think... maybe he'd grant your wish even if he didn't think it was a very good idea? Just because it made him more powerful?"

Giselle wanted to argue with Su, to insist that she go to the party. What else could be more fun? Certainly not sitting on Giselle's couch while everyone else enjoyed Halloween.
But when Su poked at Giselle's fork, Giselle looked up and saw the smile on her face. And this was what Giselle liked so much about Su, the reason she couldn't imagine weekends without her. Su had a way of making everything better. She could always find the silver lining. And she was sincere about it, too. She meant every word she said.
For some reason, Su would rather have a boring night with Giselle than a fun night with everyone else. Or maybe there was a reason— maybe Su really liked Giselle that much, too.
"That sounds fun," Giselle admitted. "Only if you're sure. I don't want to be the reason you had a boring Halloween."

NAME: Giselle Adams HOMETOWN: Ciudad de Rosas OCCUPATION: Magnifique YOUR WISH: To get married! WHAT YOU GAVE UP: Her dreams— literally her ability to dream at night, because real life will be so much better! YOUR UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCE: Fated to fall in love with someone else... in real life... LOYALIST/REBEL/OTHER: Secretly starting to feel like a rebel... shhh...
BIOGRAPHY: TW: Death
First Giselle got married, and then she fell in love.
It's not supposed to go that way, but Giselle had one opportunity to use her one wish, and she believed it was the only way to secure a stable future for herself. It was all her parents had ever wanted for her, and after they mysteriously disappeared in the Nowhere Desert on a journey to visit family in the Stargazing Plains, Giselle knew it had to be the answer. After all, her ability to talk to small animals hardly had much use in the kingdom.
And she swore to Magnifico— swore to him—he had her loyalty now. She would stick with him, forever and ever, because he had made her heart's deepest wish come true. That was enough, it seemed, to secure her real future— as a member of Magnifico's inner circle.
Now, Giselle had a wedding ring and a husband and an excellent future in the Court, and she had nothing to worry about...
Until she met Amity Blight.
Then, Giselle fell in love.
And it's not just that Giselle wants to undo her wish. It's not just that she goes home every night to a husband who barely seems to notice her, who only ever makes her feel tired and drained. It's not just that the best part of every day is seeing the girl she knows she's not supposed to love, and the worst part is saying goodbye to her.
Giselle has other doubts about Magnifico. She's starting to think her fellow Magnifiques might feel the same way too.
But the way she feels about Amity, well, it certainly helps.

MAGNIFICO: It had worked!
Ah, Rosas. How he had missed it. His fine clothes, his jewels, his wife. All these pretty, familiar things were back with him and he was so glad. While there was certainly things in that other world that he appreciated (social media, hello?!) -- now that he had brought the town into the story, they could create it. Surely someone in that stupid town understood how the internet worked! Could get them cell phones. And if not, Magnifico would discover a different, more magical way of doing things.
Maybe that was the way to go anyway…
What was he talking about?
“Ah, my Magnifiques,” Magnifico purred as his students filed into the classroom. He had found their choice of nickname hilarious, considering. They hadn’t even known. But oh, they were smart. There had, probably, been some part of them that realized it.
“Please, sit. I am sure you have many questions but let me answer a few from the start: yes, Salvador was just a facade.” No point getting into the whole “murdered and stole his identity thing.” That was a messy business, Magnifico did not want to talk about it. “You can refer to me as King Magnifico, or Your Majesty. Unfortunately, we can no longer go by an affectionate nickname. It would undermine me to my subjects, you see. But don’t fret, you five still hold a special place in my heart.”
He put both his hands over his chest and smiled softly at them. “After all, you helped make all of this happen.” He spread his arms out to gesture, abstractly, at all of Rosas.

Unintended consequences.
Giselle knew this wasn't about her, but her mind immediately went to her grades. When she'd agreed to give up her degree, she'd assumed she just wouldn't graduate— wouldn't walk at that far-off ceremony, wouldn't have the piece of paper to hang on her wall.
What she hadn't agreed to— hadn't thought she was agreeing to— was the way she could never seem to do well in class, no matter how hard she studied. Everything she reviewed seemed to be the opposite of what the exams asked, and her papers always seemed to veer off-topic, even when she planned them carefully.
Giselle had assumed she was just not very smart to begin with, and she wasn't prepared for uni. But listening to Kleo talk about unintended consequences, her theory that magic could be involved was starting to make more sense.
"Oh," Giselle said in a low voice. "I- I think you may be right. My wish had some... unintended consequences too, I think. I wish Professor Sal would have warned us more..."

Giselle looked up at the tree uncertainly. Maybe, maybe, if she stood on her tip-toes, she could reach the branch. But Giselle didn't want to risk disturbing the nest and making things worse.
"I don't think I could climb," Giselle admitted. "I'm not quite that strong, and I wouldn't want to take a chance of disrupting the nest. We could, uh, maybe I could give you a boost?"
The thought still made her worried. What else were they going to do, though? They had to do something.

This time of year had Giselle feeling nostalgic. Just a year ago, she'd left that note in a book here in Chapter Three, and thus had started her flirtation with A.B., which had led to her animosity with Amity Blight, which had ultimately led to her friendship with Amity. Yes, friendship. There was nothing weird about it now.
And so she paged through that old copy of Frankenstein, smiling to herself. When she realized she wasn't here alone, she snapped the book shut like she'd been caught doing something she shouldn't. "I'm going to buy something, I promise, I just- oh, sorry," Giselle cut her off when she realized this wasn't one of the shop employees. "You don't work here, do you?"

Watching Jeremy and Linnet sing, something stirred in Giselle. A feeling she hadn't expected. She couldn't put her finger on it— it was kind of sad. Jeremy and Linnet were so in love, and it was clear from the way their voices blended together perfectly.
Benjamin wasn't even going to sing with her. Giselle wasn't even going to ask him to. She was just relieved that he was clapping. That he was here at all.
And this was going to be the rest of her life now. Sitting in the audience, watching people who really loved each other sing duets because someone who tolerated her was the best she could hope for.
Tears started to form in Giselle's eyes at this thought, but then the song ended and Giselle clapped and cheered as enthusiastically as she could. "Brilliant!" she cheered, pushing the feelings down. "Wow!"
Giselle glanced at Benjamin at the question. "Erm, just the piano for me but, er, not very well. But you're right, this is really just about having fun!"
And she was! Having fun! Look, she was smiling!

Giselle could see the tears in Kleo's eyes, and it made her want to cry too. She knew, of course, how horrible it was to be estranged from your family. But Giselle had thought Kleo's family was different— big and present and very much alive.
"Oh no, Kleo," Giselle said in a hushed tone. "Oh, I'm really sorry. It's awful, isn't it?"
She would have left it there, but there was something else Kleo had said that Giselle just couldn't let go.
"But... how could it be the wish that caused that?" Granted, Giselle didn't really know the details of Kleo's wish. Just that she was happy with it— or, at least, she'd been happy with it, when she first made it.
What had changed?

Giselle, on the other hand, desperately wanted to go to the party. And she assumed everyone else did, too. She didn't want to hold Su back from doing fun things like that just because her own parents were strict.
"I, um, I don't know," Giselle admitted glumly, poking at her food with a plastic fork. "They haven't actually asked me or anything. I just know they wouldn't let me go to a party."
She looked up at Su. "You should go, though. Really. It seems like it's gonna be a lot of fun. I don't want you to not go because of me."

Giselle frowned. It really sounded like Kleo was talking about something specific...
"In what way?" she asked uneasily. "Sorry, I mean- it's not that I think you're wrong, I just... well, it sounds like you're getting at something here."
If it was about their classwork, Giselle wanted to know, of course. And if it was about the wishes...
Then Giselle needed to know. The stakes were too high.

The way Kleo said that made Giselle feel kind of uneasy. It was almost a little snarky. And Giselle hadn't meant to talk badly about Professor Sánchez behind his back.
At the same time... he had to have regrets sometimes, right?
"But- but everyone questions themselves sometimes, right?" Giselle pressed. "Even if you're pretty sure you made the right decision. You could still have... doubts now and then."
Not that Giselle was having doubts about her own wish. Or maybe she was. But only in the most normal way possible, of course.
