how to start, research, write, and finish a passable essay in one night
bc listen. i know studyblr makes it seem like everyone always has their shit together and rewrites notes perfectly and gets exactly 8 hours of sleep every day, but we all know it’s a lie
here’s the scenario: let’s say you have a 7 page paper due at 11am tomorrow, and it is currently 5pm, and you absolutely despise this particular class so you haven’t exactly been keeping up with your readings. let’s break down how the next 16 hours are going to go and how you’re going to make it out alive:
((disclaimer: please try and limit this to, like, a once-in-a-while thing. staying up all night is bad for you and you shouldn’t make it a habit))
PART I: staying awake
you’re gonna need some caffeine. if you’re drinking coffee, i find it better to drink it gradually over time instead of chugging it all at once. having some snacks ready may also help keep your energy levels up
don’t get comfortable. seriously. this is gonna be a miserable experience. don’t try to make it more pleasant by getting in your pajamas and wrapping yourself in 3 blankets and laying down, and for the love of god don’t write this essay in your bed. you’re much less likely to fall asleep at a desk (or, as i’ll be doing tonight, the common room floor)
you’re gonna start falling asleep around 1 or 2. at least, that’s usually what happens to me. but don’t give up! power through, drink some coffee, eat a snack; the second wind is coming, and by 3am you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world (or at least lucid enough to type again)
hydrate yourself!!! you don’t need to be dying of thirst on top of being sleep deprived, and drinking a glass of super cold water can be surprisingly helpful in keeping you awake
PART II: writing the godforsaken paper
get at least vaguely familiar with your sources and develop your argument from them. if you’re writing a paper where you need to include evidence from, say, one of shakespeare’s plays which you haven’t read, don’t waste time reading the book. just don’t do it. sparknote the shit out of it, think about what you can use from it that could make for an interesting thesis, and make your thesis.
write out your introduction and thesis first. i know a lot of people have been saying it’s easier to write the body of an essay before the introduction and conclusion, but i find that having a clear argument set out for me makes it easier to remember what my main point is. this is especially true for an essay where you don’t particularly care what you’re writing about. if you have an argument set out for you (or better yet, a thesis which encompasses all your main points), then you can refer back to it with each new paragraph and know exactly what you need to say and where it’s going to lead. (i never said this essay was gonna win prizes, i said it was gonna get done)
gather your quotes in advance. skim through your sources. see anything that relates to your topic? type it out (AND INCLUDE THE PAGE NUMBER bc the last thing you need is to be frantically searching through a book for a quote at five in the morning), keep all your quotes in a notepad document, and then you’ll have all your evidence handy. this makes the process so much easier.
you don’t have time for an outline. your thesis is your outline. just write. if you find yourself thinking, “whoops, i just included a whole quote that directly contradicts my argument,” save it for your counterargument paragraph and refute it there somehow. writing it won’t be smooth sailing, but i sometimes find myself thinking of new ideas while writing rather than while outlining. go with the flow
reach that page count. it’s all about the little things. add a couple more words to each paragraph so that the last word gets pushed to the next line. make your heading just slightly longer (if you’re allowed). read through again and see if there’s anything more you can add or anywhere that needs a better transition, and use them to stretch this awful essay to its absolute limits
when you’re done, whenever that may be, get some sleep. if it’s 6am and you don’t even feel tired, that’s the devil talking. even just an hour and a half of sleep will make you feel a little less dead tomorrow
PART III: RECOVER YOUR SOUL
it’ll be agony, but wake up a little before your paper is due to proofread it one more time. last time i stayed up writing an essay, i proofread it the next day and found mistakes i didn’t even think it was possible for a person to make. you’re not gonna catch them when you’re transcending the mortal plane at 5:30am, so best wait until you’ve slept a little. (if you haven’t slept, maybe ask a friend to do it for you)
hand in your paper and stop thinking about it. is it your best work? almost definitely not. is it finished? yes. are you gonna get a good grade? it’s possible! but you won’t find out today, so put it out of your mind. here’s what you should do instead:
take a nap. you earned it

Since we all are a little bit homebound right now, I found myself to get bored like crazy, which is why I put together a list of things you can do to entertain yourself!
Have a long dinner with your family - especially if you normally don’t see them that often, it’s great for both parties to know what is happening in your or their life
Help your family with the household if you’re home all day and they still need to go to work. They are stressed as well, and even by doing small things like laundry or vacuuming you help them a lot!
Call further relatives - they will be happy to hear you’re alright and even happier to know that you think of them
Meet up at home with a few close friends, if you want to (but limit it to 3 to 4 and make sure they’re well!)
Read the book with the 1,000 pages you always wanted to finish
Watch a new series without a bad conscience (I want to watch the new episodes of Élite, but also give The Witcher and Marvelous Mrs Maisel a try)
Rediscover old (video) games; this can be chess or other board games, but also Sims or Animal Crossing
Have a spa day - make your nails, have a bubble bath with a bath bomb from Lush you have owned for so long but never had the time to use it, have a face and hair mask
Study from home if your uni got closed or postponed, gather the material and watch the videos if your uni provides them!
Do some online courses (LinkedIn Learning offers quite good ones)
Read the newspaper or watch the news to keep up with information
Listen to and discover new music and create playlists
Find out about possible jobs or internships you can apply to now that you have the time for it, and don’t forget to update your CV!
Bake delicious chocolate chip cookies, in most of the cases you have everything you need at home already
Go online shopping or make a list with things you want to buy
Read about anything you always wanted to learn more about or watch documentaries
Make plans for the future - your dream vacation, job, house, whatever!
Keep up with sports by watching workout or dance videos, or go for a run in the park since all sports classes got cancelled as well
Things will get better! Keep calm and positive and stay safe! 💮

Should NASA Send New Horizons To A Nearby Star For Its Final Mission?
“Over the next million years, the Voyagers and Pioneers will approach numerous stars, but only at relatively large separations. The closest will be Pioneer 10, encountering HIP 1177795 in ~90,000 years from 0.75 light-years away. But New Horizons, unlike the others, still has significant fuel remaining. After encountering Pluto and Arrokoth, it may yet target another object in the outer Kuiper belt. Subsequently, it will eventually enter interstellar space, but can be boosted to approach future stellar targets.”
In the 1970s, four spacecraft were launched with speeds large enough that they would eventually escape the Solar System: Pioneer 10 and 11 and Voyager 1 and 2. In the 2000s, New Horizons became the fifth spacecraft that will leave the Solar System and enter interstellar space. But unlike the other four, it still has fuel remaining and could boost itself to alter its trajectory. In the aftermath of the ESA’s Gaia mission, we now can predict where more than a billion stars in the Milky Way will be located up to a million years in the future, raising the possibility that we could alter New Horizon’s trajectory to encounter another solar system in the distant future.
Should we do it? Of course we should! Come learn about this fascinating possibility today.

if nobody has told you this i’m telling you now: it’s okay not to have a specific goal in life or one big dream you live and breathe for. i know there’s something awfully romantic about the idea of waking up every day working towards something specific and feeling like that’s your purpose in life, but that’s not all life is about, you know? if you have that, that’s great! and if you don’t, that’s great too! wake up every day wanting to try something new, to explore your mind and this world with it. there’s nothing wrong with changing hobbies every week, one person’s goal can be to play the piano like mozart, but you’re also allowed to just follow your curiosity and try 50 different instruments just to know how they make your heart feel. you can try ballet one day and explore heavy metal playlists the next. don’t let anyone tell you that you need a purpose to be happy and to feel like you really deserve to be here, because you don’t. your purpose is YOU and the magical mystery of how stardust came alive in the shape of your body, mind and soul. and that’s enough, i promise. YOU are enough, i promise.

THROUGH A RAPIST’S EYES” (PLS TAKE TIME TO READ THIS. It may save a life, It may save your life.)
An Article from Neena Susan Thomas
“Through a rapist’s eyes. A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interview…ed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:
1] The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun! , braid, or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.
2] The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who’s clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.
3] They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.
4] The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is grocery store parking lots.
5] Number two is office parking lots/garages.
6] Number three is public restrooms.
7] The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught.
8] If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn’t worth it because it will be time-consuming.
9] These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas,or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.
10] Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you’re not worth it.
POINTS THAT WE SHOULD REMEMBER:
1] If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: can’t believe it is so cold out here, we’re in for a bad winter. Now that you’ve seen their faces and could identify them in a line- up, you lose appeal as a target.
2] If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they’d leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.
3] If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.
4] If someone grabs you, you can’t beat them with strength but you can do it by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh – HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it really hurts.
5] After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy’s parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you’ll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause him a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he’s out of there.
6] When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.
7] Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, don’t dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel little silly at the time, but you’d feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.
FINALLY, PLEASE REMEMBER THESE AS WELL ….
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.
2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans : if a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you…. chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won’t see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON’T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU CLOSE the DOORS , LEAVE.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
a. Be aware: look around your car as someone may be hiding at the passenger side , peek into your car, inside the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. ( DO THIS TOO BEFORE RIDING A TAXI CAB) .
b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
c. Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked “for help” into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it and it’s better safe than sorry.
If u have compassion reblog this post. ‘Helping hands are better than Praying Lips’ – give us your helping hand.

Calculating Percentage by Mass Composition
– to find the percentage of the mass composition of a single element in a compound, express the mass of each element as a percentage of the total mass of the compound
Example:   C2H4O2
(2)(12.01) + (4)(1.008) + (2)(16.00) = 60.05
carbon = (2 x 12.01) / 60.05 = 40.00%
hydrogen = (4 x 1.008) / 60.005 = 6.714%
oxygen = (2 x 16.00) / 60.05 = 53.29%
– pure compounds have a fixed percentage
– purity can be determined by comparing percentages
