To get ready for our time in the computer lab on Friday, you should spend some time deciding what work you would like to write this expository essay about. 

In this brainstorming post, I would like you to post an image of a work you are considering writing about. Then beneath the image you post, please note the artist’s name and write one paragraph on who that artist is or was. When did they live? Where were they born? What sort of work did or do they create?

Remember, brainstorming makes your writing process infinitely easier. So, spend some thoughtful time on this step.

 (As an example, if I were going to write about a mural in Memphis, I might look into whether that artist has painted murals in other places as well. OR do they primarily create paintings for museums and gallery exhibitions?) 

So the guidelines for this post are as follows:

Spend some time deciding what image/work/piece you may want to write about.

Post a photo of the piece.

Write at least one paragraph on the artist. You do not necessarily need to answer all of the questions above. You might answer one or two. This will be different for each of you.

Your response to this prompt is due before our class meeting on Friday, November 10.

Digital Journal Prompt #10

Writing about Art/ Images/ Sculpture/ Photographs/ Installations . . . 

So far we have considered Jean-Michel Basquiat’s work (http://www.basquiat.com/index-new.htm) and French artist JR’s political, public, works (http://www.jr-art.net/) (the documentary we watched earlier is linked below). We visited the gallery here to see Tim Murray (http://www.thmurrayjrart.com/index.php) and Jimmy Crosthwait’s work (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSBm1VkNcQw). 

For Wednesday’s class, we will explore The Memphis Public Art Project (http://www.memphisart.org/). For this digital journal post, I would like you to choose one of the works documented on the Memphis Art Project website. And then follow the guidelines below:

Choose a work on the website. Look up the artist who created the work. What can you find out about them? (Do not stop at one failed google search. Spend some time looking the artist up.)

Post an image of the work (from the website is fine). 

Write about the work, answering some (not all) of the following questions: Where is this work? Why did you choose this work? Who is this artist? Are they from Memphis? (Write in full sentences and be sure to include the websites in which you found your information; posting urls at the bottom of your post is fine.)
