the thing about the executive order calling for the institutionalization of mentally ill people and people with addictions who "cannot care for themselves" is that someone like me, despite being mentally ill and unable to care for myself, is low risk. i have an apartment, i have caregivers, i have involved family. someone in my situation or similar is unlikely to wind up institutionalized because of this executive order.
the people who are most likely to wind up institutionalized because of this executive order are people experiencing domestic violence, and people who are currently homeless. this order instructs state governments that they can apply laws around institutionalization extremely loosely to cover just about any homeless person. the explicit text of the order talks about "fighting vagrancy." this loose interpretation can also be used when abusers seek to have their victims institutionalized, and will allow laws preventing that to be loosened.
this is not an order saying that every single mentally ill/disabled person will be institutionalized. this order is part of the war on the poorest americans, the most vulnerable. this is class warfare, as waged by democratic and republican state and local governments alike since the supreme court grants pass decision.
to respond to this order effectively, we (housed mentally ill/disabled people), have to show up for our homeless neighbors. we can't consider street homeless people a lost cause. they are our comrades, our neighbors, members of our communities. when i was more mobile, i used to show up at encampments with a cooler of water bottles and popsicles on hot summer days, and use that to build a relationship, start asking people what they needed, what would help their communities. look into unhoused organizing and activism where you live. there are people already doing this work. if you want to fight widespread institutionalization, that's where you need to start.

As a wheelchair user I'm trying to reframe my language for "being in the way."
"I'm in the way," "I can't fit," and "I can't go there," is becoming "there's not enough space," "the walkway is too narrow," and "that place isn't accessible."
It's a small change, but to me it feels as if I'm redirecting blame from myself to the people that made these places inaccessible in the first place. I don't want people to just think that they're helping me, I want them to think that they're making up for someone else's wrongdoing. I want them to remember every time I've needed help as something someone else caused.

if you want to actually start to end homelessness, you need to give homeless people unconditional homes, including when we use them to do drugs or sit around drinking. either housing is unconditional or it isn’t
someone sitting at home alone, an active alcoholic, squandering your charity, drinking all day is better situation than a street homeless alcoholic. someone using drugs in your charity house is better than them doing the same w no shelter
most of you would not like most street homeless people, I definitely don’t and didn’t when I was street homeless. for every one person who uses unconditional shelter to turn themselves around, someone else will do jack shit and very slowly, if ever, work through the issues that made them homeless, will maybe never be able to live independently. still better than street homelessness, still worth doing. ultimately either you believe that shelter should be universal or you don’t
homeless people actually can’t be rehabilitated if you want to end homelessness. we either affirm the right to shelter for the worst drunken, lying, filthy, cheating, self destructive homeless people that exist, genuinely irredeemable wankers, or we concede that shelter is not a right

"everyone should care about accessibility because most people will become disabled at some point in their life" is a logical argument and I understand its popularity
however, everyone should care about accessibility because disabled people are fellow human beings living in the same society as you who deserve the same rights as you
thank you good night

why don't they make prebuilt sheds you can buy online that are multistory and circular with a conical roof. why can't i buy a wizard tower. for my backyard. home depot should sell it in a bundle with the skeleton. they're missing out on valuable wizard dollars. they're like regular dollars but covered in glitter and weed smell.

I fucking hate that the general response to RFK Jr's eugenist take on autistic people is "autistic people do pay taxes, autistic people do work, autistic people do date!"
Some autistic people don't and that shouldn't make them less worthy of life. Some autistic people do need constant help and support and that shouldn't make them less worthy of life.
Once again we're falling in the right wing trap of :
They make a hateful, fascist statement
Instead of focusing on the fact that it is hateful and fascist we try to show them that they are factually wrong
We throw our own allies and the most vulnerable of us under the bus in the process
We legitimise an only slightly less hateful, fascist view as we go
They have completed their goal of making us accept the still hateful, fascist second version, hurrah. What a victory.
Right now what we're getting to with that is that autistic people who can work and pay taxes are okay, and the others aren't. Fuck this shit.
Same thing happens with the people who are being deported ("they have a visa!", "they didn't even have a criminal record!" -> even if they didn't have a visa, even if they did have a criminal record, deporting them and detaining them in what's essentially a concentration camp wouldn't be okay, you absolute tools of fascism.)
